A sofa chair in solid teak, hand-carved, gilded, embroidered and upholstered by master Indian artisans, made entirely to your measurements.

It works as a single occasional chair rather than as part of a suite - beside a sofa, in a bedroom, in a hall, or as the one seat in a room that everything else is arranged around.

The embroidered panel can be a floral spray as shown, a motif of your own, a monogram, or something drawn to match a fabric you already own. It is made specifically for your chair, so it is genuinely yours.

Seat height, seat depth, back height and arm height are all set by you.

Order singly or as a pair. Photographs on this page show the actual chair our artisans produced, not a computer render.

The embroidery on this chair is finished long before the chair is.

It is worked flat, stretched on a frame, while the seat and back are still bare wood. That is the only way to do raised thread work properly - the ground has to be under even tension across its whole surface, and you cannot tension cloth that is already stretched over a padded chair back.

Which creates the problem the embroiderer has to solve at the start: the panel will not stay flat. It is going to be pulled over a domed, padded oval, and every part of it will move outward as it goes on. A design laid out to look correct on the flat comes out stretched at the centre and cramped at the edges once it is upholstered.

So the design is drawn to the finished shape, not to the flat cloth. The centre of the spray is set slightly smaller than it will appear, the outer stems are spaced a little wider, and the whole composition is planned so that it opens into balance at the moment it is pulled over the pad.

Raised work adds one more constraint: threads that stand off the surface cannot be dragged. So the panel is fitted last, worked outward from the centre by hand, with the tension taken through the plain ground between the stems and never across a bloom.

It is why an embroidered chair back is a different order of work from a printed or woven one.

Frame: Solid teak throughout - oval back frame, seat rails, arms, arm supports and legs. No veneer over engineered board.

Construction: Gilded carved oval back frame with carved crest, padded scroll arms on shaped carved supports, carved rose garland seat rail, cabriole legs with carved toes.

Embroidery: Hand-worked raised thread panel, designed to the finished domed oval rather than to the flat, and fitted last. Motif, palette and density chosen with you; a plain or woven back can be built instead.

Upholstery: Round filled seat, padded arms and two cushions, in fabrics of your choice. We can source fabric on your behalf.

Finish: Champagne gilt, hand-applied and burnished. Gold or silver leaf, painted tones or natural teak can be specified.

Dimensions: Custom sizes made to order - confirmed in writing before production.

Made: Handcrafted Indian luxury, produced to order by master Indian artisans.

Raised embroidery cannot be compressed, so the back panel is protected by a rigid shaped guard that spans the oval frame edge to edge with a clear air gap behind it. Nothing touches the thread work at any point in transit.

The gilded carving is covered first in a soft, lint-free wrap laid on without tension, since burnished leaf marks under pressure long before timber does.

The carved rose garland runs the full width of the seat rail at knee height and stands proud - foam is shaped to bridge over it, bearing on the rail body rather than onto the roses.

Both arms project beyond the seat and meet doorframes first; each is sleeved along its length with additional protection at the carved scroll.

The seat and cushions are covered in breathable protective layers that will not compress the filling, and the cushions travel wrapped separately.

Each cabriole leg is padded with a rigid guard over the carved toe. The chair then goes into a rigid outer carton braced internally. Dent-free arrival is guaranteed.

Free delivery is included anywhere in India, with no distance surcharge and nothing added at the end. Metros, tier-two cities and smaller towns are served on the same terms, and a pair ships on the same free terms as a single chair.

Production begins once your dimensions, embroidery design, fabrics, carving depth and finish are confirmed in writing. The embroidery is worked flat on a frame while the chair is still being carved, and fitted last, so the two run in parallel - we give you an honest timeline and keep you updated as both progress.

We dispatch through carriers experienced with gilded, carved and upholstered furniture, and send tracking details as soon as the chair leaves us.

On arrival our team brings the chair in, positions it, sets the cushions, checks it sits firm and level and removes all packaging. Dent-free arrival is guaranteed - if anything is not right, tell us and we will resolve it.

The solid teak frame and joinery carry a 20-year warranty - the oval back frame, the seat rails, the arms and their supports, and every leg joint.

The oval back frame carries a particular demand. A closed oval has no straight members and no corner joints to stiffen it, so its rigidity comes from how the curved sections are cut and jointed to each other and into the seat. Ours are cut from solid teak with the grain following each arc, which is what keeps the oval true and the embroidered panel evenly tensioned across it.

The arms are jointed into the seat rails and into the back frame rather than relying on one end, since a scroll arm takes the load every time someone pushes up to stand.

The teak carries a lifetime warranty against termite damage for as long as you own the chair.

If anything covered needs attention, send us your order details and photographs and our artisans will handle the repair or replacement.
