A velvet chair on a solid teak frame, hand-carved, silver-leafed and upholstered by master Indian artisans, made entirely to your measurements.

Rose pink as photographed is one option among any colour you like - velvet holds strong colour better than almost any other covering, which is why it suits a chair meant to be the one piece of colour in a pale room.

The closed padded arms make it a chair to settle into rather than a formal one, and the loose seat cushion keeps the part that wears first replaceable.

Seat height, seat depth, back height and arm height are all set by you.

Order singly or as a pair. Photographs on this page show the actual chair our artisans produced, not a computer render.

Velvet has a direction, and every upholsterer has to decide what to do about it.

The pile lies one way. Run your hand with it and the surface is smooth and looks lighter; run against it and it feels textured and looks darker and deeper. That is not a defect - it is the whole character of the cloth - but it means the same velvet cut two ways gives two visibly different colours, and a chair covered without thinking about it ends up looking patchy.

The convention on a chair back is pile running downward. Light falling from above then strikes the pile at its richest angle, so the colour reads deep and even rather than washed out - which is why velvet backs look like the colour you chose in the shop.

On the seat the decision changes. Pile is set running toward the front edge, because that is the direction a person's weight moves it as they sit and stand, and cloth cut to work with that motion stays even instead of developing a permanent brushed patch.

Then everything else on the chair - the arms, the outside back, the cushion - has to be cut to agree with those two decisions, or the eye sees a change of shade where two panels meet.

It is why velvet takes more cloth than a flat weave, and why it is worth asking whether it was cut properly.

Frame: Solid teak throughout - back frame, seat rails, arms, arm supports and legs. No veneer over engineered board.

Construction: Silver-leafed carved shaped back frame with a hand-woven caned oval set into the carved crest, padded closed arms on carved supports, carved seat rail with shell centre, cabriole legs with carved toes.

Upholstery: Buttoned velvet back with the pile run downward, padded arms, upholstered seat frame with a loose seat cushion cut with the pile running forward. Colour and cloth of your choice; we can source on your behalf.

Finish: Hand-applied silver leaf, burnished. Gold or champagne leaf, painted tones or natural teak can be specified.

Dimensions: Custom sizes made to order - confirmed in writing before production.

Available: Singly or in pairs.

Made: Handcrafted Indian luxury, produced to order by master Indian artisans.

Velvet is the most easily marked covering we work with, because pressure flattens the pile and a flattened patch shows immediately. Every velvet surface is covered in a breathable layer applied without compression, and no strap, block or brace bears on cloth at any point.

The loose seat cushion travels wrapped separately for the same reason.

The caned oval in the crest must never take a load; a rigid guard is fitted over the crest spanning frame edge to frame edge with an air gap behind the weave.

The silver-leafed carving is covered first in a soft, lint-free wrap laid on without tension, since burnished leaf marks under pressure long before timber does.

Both arms project beyond the seat and are sleeved along their length, and the carved seat rail with its shell is bridged so nothing presses into it. Each cabriole leg is padded with a rigid guard over the carved toe.

The chair then goes into a rigid outer carton braced internally. Dent-free arrival is guaranteed.

Free delivery is included anywhere in India, with no distance surcharge and nothing added at the end. Metros, tier-two cities and smaller towns are served on the same terms, and a pair ships on the same free terms as a single chair.

Production begins once your dimensions, velvet colour, carving depth and finish are confirmed in writing. Caning follows carving and leafing, and velvet is cut and buttoned last, so the sequence is fixed - we give you an honest timeline and keep you updated as the chair progresses.

We dispatch through carriers experienced with carved, leafed, caned and upholstered furniture, and send tracking details as soon as the chair leaves us.

On arrival our team brings the chair in, sets the cushion, checks it sits firm and level on your floor and removes all packaging. Dent-free arrival is guaranteed - if anything is not right, tell us and we will resolve it.

The solid teak frame and joinery carry a 20-year warranty - the back frame, the seat rails, the arms and their supports, and every leg joint.

The caned oval in the crest is small but it is worth noting. Cane is woven under tension, and even a small panel pulls inward on the frame around it permanently - so the crest is cut from solid teak thick enough to resist that, rather than from a thin shaped piece that would eventually bow.

The closed padded arms are jointed into both the back frame and the seat rails, since an arm that is leaned on and pushed up from needs support at both ends.

The loose cushion construction also protects the frame over time: the seat can be recovered independently, so the carved and leafed frame is never handled by an upholsterer for routine wear.

The teak carries a lifetime warranty against termite damage for as long as you own the chair.

If anything covered needs attention, send us your order details and photographs and our artisans will handle the repair or replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this product.

Yes, any colour. Velvet holds strong colour better than almost any other covering, which is why it suits a chair meant to be the one piece of colour in a pale room. Send us a shade or a photograph of your room and we will match it.

Yes, a great deal. Pile runs downward on the back so the colour reads deep and even under overhead light, and forward on the seat so it works with the way weight moves it. Every other panel is then cut to agree, or the eye sees a change of shade where panels meet.

Yes - it is a loose cushion sitting into an upholstered frame, so you can turn it so it wears evenly, clean it properly, and have it recovered later without the carved and leafed frame being handled.

A hand-woven cane panel set into the carved crest - an open weave detail at the very top of an otherwise solid chair. It can be left out and carved solid if you prefer.

Yes, if it is cut correctly - which is exactly why the pile direction is decided panel by panel. Ordinary care is brushing in the direction of the pile and keeping it out of harsh direct sunlight, as with any pile fabric.

To your measurements. Seat height, seat depth, back height and arm height are all set by you - tell us who will use it most and we will proportion it for them.

Yes. Gold or champagne leaf, a painted colour you send us, or natural teak with a clear finish. All leaf is hand-applied over a prepared ground and burnished by hand.

A 20-year warranty on the solid teak frame and joinery, including the arm supports, the carved crest and every leg joint, plus a lifetime warranty against termite damage on the teak.
