A wing chair in solid teak, hand-carved, gilded, embroidered and upholstered by master Indian artisans, made entirely to your measurements.

It is the chair to choose if you actually want to sit for a long time - reading, working, or simply out of the way of a room that is busy around you.

The wings can be built taller or shorter, and set closer to your shoulders or further back, depending on how enclosed you want to feel. That is a genuine choice on a made-to-order chair and it changes the character of the piece considerably.

The embroidered panel can be a floral spray as shown, a motif of your own, or replaced with plain or patterned upholstery.

Seat height, seat width, seat depth, back height and wing position are all set by you. Photographs on this page show the actual chair our artisans produced, not a computer render.

Wings were invented to stop draughts. A chair placed near a fire in a cold house is warm on one side and cold on the other, and putting panels either side of the head keeps the heat in and the draught out. That is the whole origin, and it is entirely practical.

What kept them in use long after houses stopped being draughty is a different benefit nobody designed for.

A wing chair changes how a room feels to the person sitting in it. Peripheral vision is cut off on both sides, so movement across the room stops pulling at your attention. Sound arriving from beside you is absorbed by the padded panel rather than reaching your ear directly. And other people read the chair as occupied territory in a way they do not read an open chair - a wing chair signals that whoever is in it is doing something.

The design decision that matters is where the wings sit relative to your shoulders. Set too far back they do nothing; set too far forward they close the chair in and make it hard to talk to anyone. The useful position is just forward of the shoulder line, high enough to support the side of the head when you lean.

Because that depends on the person, we ask before we build. It is one of the few dimensions on a chair that is genuinely worth getting right for an individual.

Frame: Solid teak throughout - back frame, wing frames, seat rails, arms, arm supports and legs. No veneer over engineered board.

Construction: Upholstered wing panels on shaped teak frames, gilded carved back frame with carved crest, padded arms with carved gilded scroll fronts on shaped supports, fluted carved seat rail with shell centre, cabriole legs with carved feet.

Embroidery: Hand-worked raised thread panel on the centre back. Motif and palette chosen with you, or replaced with plain or patterned upholstery.

Upholstery: Wings, back, arms and sprung seat in fabrics of your choice; we can source on your behalf.

Finish: Hand-applied gold leaf, burnished. Silver or champagne leaf, painted tones or natural teak can be specified.

Dimensions: Custom sizes made to order - seat height, width, depth, back height and wing position set by you, confirmed in writing before production.

Made: Handcrafted Indian luxury, produced to order by master Indian artisans.

The wings project forward on both sides and are the widest part of the chair, so they set how it is crated. Each is protected with a shaped guard that spans from the back frame to the arm, bearing on the gilded frame edges rather than on the upholstered face.

Raised embroidery cannot be compressed, so the centre back panel is protected by a rigid guard held clear of the thread work with an air gap behind it. Nothing touches the stitching in transit.

The gilded carving is covered first in a soft, lint-free wrap laid on without tension, since burnished leaf marks under pressure long before timber does.

The fluted seat rail with its carved shell sits at knee height and is bridged so nothing presses into the carving, and both carved scroll arm fronts are guarded individually.

Upholstered surfaces are covered in breathable layers that will not compress the filling. Each cabriole leg is padded with a rigid guard at the foot. The chair then goes into a rigid outer carton braced internally. Dent-free arrival is guaranteed.

Free delivery is included anywhere in India, with no distance surcharge and nothing added at the end. Metros, tier-two cities and smaller towns are served on the same terms, and a pair ships on the same free terms as a single chair.

Production begins once your dimensions, wing position, embroidery design, fabrics, carving depth and finish are confirmed in writing. The embroidery is worked flat while the frame is being carved and gilded, and fitted during upholstery - we give you an honest timeline and keep you updated as both progress.

We dispatch through carriers experienced with gilded, carved and upholstered furniture, and send tracking details as soon as the chair leaves us.

On arrival our team brings the chair in, positions it, checks it sits firm and level on your floor and removes all packaging. Dent-free arrival is guaranteed - if anything is not right, tell us and we will resolve it.

The solid teak frame and joinery carry a 20-year warranty - the back frame, the wing frames, the seat rails, the arms and their supports, and every leg joint.

The wings are structural, not padding stuck to the sides. Each is built on its own shaped teak frame, jointed into the back frame and into the arm below it, so leaning your head or shoulder into a wing loads a proper frame rather than a stapled panel. That joint is what decides whether a wing chair still feels solid after twenty years.

The seat rails are cut deep from solid stock because a wide, deeply filled seat spans further before reaching a leg than a formal chair seat does.

The teak carries a lifetime warranty against termite damage for as long as you own the chair, from the oils in the timber rather than the leaf over them.

If anything covered needs attention, send us your order details and photographs and our artisans will handle the repair or replacement.

That is what it is built for - a wide deeply filled seat, padded arms at the right height and wings to lean into. Tell us who will use it most and we will set the seat height and depth for them.
