A designer chair in solid teak, hand-carved, gilded and upholstered by master Indian artisans, made entirely to your measurements.

The open arms make it genuinely usable at a table as well as in a living room, and the shaped back gives support at the shoulders without the bulk of a high-backed chair.

Patterned upholstery is worth choosing on a chair like this, and it is worth choosing carefully - we will show you how a given design will sit on the back before anything is cut.

Seat height, seat depth, back height and arm height are all set by you.

Order singly, in pairs or as a set. Photographs on this page show the actual chair our artisans produced, not a computer render.

Putting a patterned fabric onto a shaped chair back is a cutting problem before it is a covering problem.

Most people assume the motif is simply placed in the middle. It is not that simple, because a cartouche back is not a rectangle - it is wide at the shoulders, narrow at the waist and rounded at the base, so its visual centre is not its geometric centre. Centre a medallion by measurement and it sits low; centre it by eye against the shape and it sits where it belongs.

Then there is the padding. The back is domed, so the cloth stretches as it goes over - most at the crown, least at the edges. A motif cut to look right flat comes out slightly wider and shallower once it is on, so the cut has to anticipate that distortion and allow for it.

And the repeat has to be considered across the whole chair. If the seat carries the same fabric, the motifs on the back and the seat should relate rather than fight - which usually means cutting them from the same length, in sequence, and accepting the waste that creates.

Our upholsterers lay out the pattern on the finished frame before a single cut is made, mark the centre lines on the cloth itself, and only then start. It is the difference between a patterned chair and a chair with pattern on it.

Frame: Solid teak throughout - cartouche back frame, seat rails, arms, arm supports and legs. No veneer over engineered board.

Construction: Gilded carved edge around the shaped back with pierced crest, open sweeping arms set back from the seat front with plain rounded handgrips, carved shell on the front seat rail, carved mounts at the arm-to-seat junctions, cabriole legs with carved shoulders.

Upholstery: Shaped back and sprung seat, with the pattern laid out and centred to the shape on the finished frame before cutting. Fabric of your choice; we can source on your behalf.

Finish: Soft champagne gilt, hand-applied and burnished. Gold or silver leaf, painted tones or natural teak can be specified.

Dimensions: Custom sizes made to order - confirmed in writing before production.

Available: Singly, in pairs or as a matched set.

Made: Handcrafted Indian luxury, produced to order by master Indian artisans.

The gilded carved edge runs the full outline of the back and stands proud of the upholstery, which makes it the first thing any contact reaches. Foam is shaped to follow that edge continuously, bearing on the frame body rather than on the burnished surface.

The pierced crest above the back is guarded with a rigid cover shaped over it rather than padded against.

Patterned upholstery is covered in a breathable protective layer applied without compression, so no crease is set into the cloth during transit and nothing needs steaming on arrival.

Both arms sweep well beyond the seat and meet doorframes first; each is sleeved along its full length with additional protection at the rounded handgrip.

The carved shell on the front seat rail sits at knee height and is bridged so nothing presses into it, and each cabriole leg is padded with a rigid guard at the foot. The chair then goes into a rigid outer carton braced internally. Ordered as a set, each chair is crated separately. Dent-free arrival is guaranteed.

Free delivery is included anywhere in India, with no distance surcharge and nothing added at the end. Metros, tier-two cities and smaller towns are served on the same terms, and a set ships on the same free terms as a single chair.

Production begins once your dimensions, fabric, carving depth and finish are confirmed in writing. The pattern is laid out on the finished frame before cutting, so upholstery follows carving and gilding - we give you an honest timeline and keep you updated as the chair progresses.

We dispatch through carriers experienced with gilded, carved and upholstered furniture, and send tracking details as soon as the chair leaves us.

On arrival our team brings the chair in, positions it, checks it sits firm and level on your floor and removes all packaging. Dent-free arrival is guaranteed - if anything is not right, tell us and we will resolve it.

The solid teak frame and joinery carry a 20-year warranty - the cartouche back frame, the seat rails, the arms and their supports, and every leg joint.

The waist of the back is the point to understand on this design. A cartouche narrows partway up, and that narrow section is exactly where the bending load goes when someone leans back. So it is cut from solid stock with the grain running vertically through the waist rather than across it, and the carved edge adds section there rather than taking it away.

The open arms are jointed into deep seat rails, since that joint carries the load every time someone pushes up to stand and has no leg directly beneath it.

The teak carries a lifetime warranty against termite damage for as long as you own the chair, from the oils in the timber rather than the leaf over them.

If anything covered needs attention, send us your order details and photographs and our artisans will handle the repair or replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this product.

Yes, and it suits the shaped back well. We lay the pattern out on the finished frame and mark the centre lines before cutting, so the motif sits where it belongs on the shape rather than simply in the middle of the panel.

They will relate. If the same fabric is used on both, we cut them from the same length in sequence so the motifs sit in a considered relationship rather than falling wherever the cloth happens to land.

Yes. Plain on one and patterned on the other, or two different patterns in the same tonal family. Send us materials, colours or a photograph of your room and we will advise honestly on how each will sit.

Yes. The arms are open and set back from the seat front, so the chair pulls in properly and you can rise without lifting over an arm.

To your measurements. Seat height, seat depth, back height and arm height are all set by you - tell us the table it will sit at, or who will use it most.

Yes. Chairs are built in the same run from the same stock so the carving and gilding match, and we can make some with arms and some without so armchairs sit at the head of the table.

Yes. Gold or silver leaf, the champagne gilt shown, a painted colour you send us, or natural teak with a clear finish. All leaf is hand-applied and burnished by hand.

A 20-year warranty on the solid teak frame and joinery, including the cartouche back frame, the arm supports and every leg joint, plus a lifetime warranty against termite damage on the teak.
