A wooden armchair in solid teak, hand-carved and upholstered by master Indian artisans in a silver finish, made entirely to your measurements.

It works as an occasional chair in a living room, at the end of a dining table, in a bedroom corner or beside a desk - the open-arm form is compact enough for all of them.

Seat height, seat depth, back height and arm height are all set by you rather than to a standard, which is what makes a carved chair comfortable rather than merely decorative.

You choose the fabric. Send us a material, a colour or a photograph of your room and we will upholster to it, and we can order fabric on your behalf if you would rather we sourced it.

Order singly, as a pair, or as a set for a dining table. Photographs on this page show the actual chair our artisans produced, not a computer render.

The open arm is one of the oldest pieces of practical thinking in chair design, and it was invented for exactly the reason it still matters.

Chairs with closed sides came first, and they suited people who sat down once and stayed. But as clothing became fuller - court dress in Europe, and drapes and saris everywhere - a chair that boxed the sitter in became difficult to use. You had to gather the cloth, lower yourself past the arm, and repeat the operation to stand.

Moving the arm support backwards solved it. Set the upright behind the front of the seat rail, leave the space beneath the arm open, and a person can sit down straight and stand straight up - with cloth falling through the gap rather than being trapped by it.

What that costs is structural. On a closed-arm chair the arm is supported at the front of the seat, right above a leg, and the load path is short and direct. On an open-arm chair the support stands mid-rail with no leg beneath it, so the whole weight of someone pushing down on the arm to stand up passes into the seat frame and has to be carried sideways to the legs.

Which is why the seat rails on this chair are deeper than they look, and why the arm supports are jointed into them rather than screwed on. The elegance at the front is paid for at the back of the joint.

Frame: Solid teak throughout - back frame, seat rails, arms, arm supports and legs. No veneer over engineered board.

Construction: Open arms on carved scrolled supports jointed into deep seat rails, pierced carved crest, carved rosettes at the arm-to-back junctions, turned handgrips, carved seat rail with foliate drop, cabriole legs with carved toes.

Upholstery: Shield back and sprung seat, in fabric of your choice. We can source fabric on your behalf.

Finish: Silver as photographed. Gold or champagne leaf, painted tones or natural teak can be specified instead.

Dimensions: Custom sizes made to order - seat height, seat depth, back height and arm height set by you, and final measurements confirmed in writing before production.

Available: Singly, in pairs, or as a matched set.

Made: Handcrafted Indian luxury, produced to order by master Indian artisans.

An upholstered carved chair needs two different kinds of protection at once, and both are applied. The fabric is covered in a breathable protective layer that will not mark or compress the pile, and the carved and finished timber is wrapped separately in a soft, lint-free layer laid on without tension.

The pierced crest above the back is the most fragile element and stands highest, so it is guarded with a rigid cover shaped over it rather than padded against.

Both arms project beyond the seat and take contact first through doorways; each is sleeved along its full length with additional protection at the turned handgrip and the carved scroll behind it.

The cabriole legs are padded individually with rigid guards over the carved toes, and the carved seat rail with its foliate drop is bridged so nothing presses into it.

The chair then goes into a rigid outer carton, internally braced so it cannot shift. Ordered as a set, each chair is crated separately rather than stacked. Dent-free arrival is guaranteed.

Free delivery is included anywhere in India, with no distance surcharge and nothing added at the end. Metros, tier-two cities and smaller towns are served on the same terms, and a set of chairs ships on the same free terms as a single one.

Production begins once your dimensions, fabric, carving depth and finish are confirmed in writing. Upholstery follows carving and finishing, so the sequence is fixed - we give you an honest timeline then and keep you updated as the chair moves through frame making, carving, finishing and upholstery.

We dispatch through carriers experienced with carved and upholstered furniture, and send tracking details as soon as the chair leaves us.

On arrival our team brings the chair in, positions it, checks it sits firm and level on your floor and removes all packaging. Dent-free arrival is guaranteed - if anything is not right, tell us and we will resolve it.

The solid teak frame and joinery carry a 20-year warranty - the back frame, the seat rails, the arms and their supports, and every leg joint.

On an armchair, the joint that matters most is where the arm support meets the seat rail. Every time someone pushes on the arm to stand up, that joint takes the load - and on an open-arm chair there is no leg directly beneath it to help. Ours are jointed into deep solid teak rails rather than screwed to the outside of them, which is why daily use over decades sits inside the warranty.

The back frame is covered on the same terms. It is jointed at the shoulders and into the seat, so leaning back loads the frame rather than the upholstery.

The teak carries a lifetime warranty against termite damage for as long as you own the chair, from the oils in the timber rather than the finish over them.

If anything covered needs attention, send us your order details and photographs and our artisans will handle the repair or replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this product.

So you can sit down and stand up without lifting over an arm, and so a sari, dupatta or full skirt falls clear rather than bunching. It also makes the chair read as much lighter in a room than an enclosed one of the same size.

Yes. Send us a material, a colour reference or a photograph of your room and we will upholster to it - plain weaves, silks, velvets, textured cloth or leather. We can also source fabric on your behalf if you would rather we did.

To your measurements. Seat height, seat depth, back height and arm height are all set by you - which is what makes a carved chair genuinely comfortable rather than only decorative. Tell us who will use it most and we will proportion it for them.

Yes. Chairs are built in the same run from the same stock so the carving and finish match, and we can make some with arms and some without so the armchairs sit at the head of the table.

Yes. Gold or champagne leaf, a painted colour you send us, or natural teak with a clear finish. All leaf is hand-applied over a prepared ground and burnished by hand.

The seat is built to be sat in properly, with the frame carrying the load and the seat sprung and stuffed for support. Tell us whether you prefer a firmer or a softer seat and we will build it that way.

The arm supports are jointed into deep solid teak seat rails rather than screwed to the outside of them, which is the joint that decides how long an armchair lasts. It is covered by the 20-year warranty.

A 20-year warranty on the solid teak frame and joinery, including the arm supports, back frame and every leg joint, plus a lifetime warranty against termite damage on the teak.
