A royal chair in solid teak, hand-carved and upholstered by master Indian artisans in a silver finish, made entirely to your measurements.

The tall back and open arms make it suitable at a dining table as well as in a living room, which is not true of most heavily carved chairs - closed arms usually stop a chair pulling in properly.

Two coverings mean two decisions rather than one. Choose a plain material for the buttoned back and something patterned or textured for the seat, or run one material throughout if you prefer.

Seat height, seat depth, back height and arm height are all set by you.

Order singly, in pairs or as a set. Photographs on this page show the actual chair our artisans produced, not a computer render.

Using two different materials on one chair looks like a styling choice. It is usually an upholsterer's decision, made for reasons that have nothing to do with looks.

Start with the back. Buttoning works by pulling the surface down at points and letting it gather between them, which means the material has to fold - and any pattern folded like that stops being a pattern. A motif disappears into a crease, a stripe wanders, and what was a considered design becomes noise. Plain materials, and leather in particular, are made for buttoning because folds in a plain surface read as shadow rather than as distortion.

Now the seat. It is flat, it faces upward, it catches every bit of light in the room and it takes all the wear - which is exactly where a pattern earns its place. A woven design breaks up light across the surface, so a crease from sitting or a mark from daily use disappears into it instead of standing out on an unbroken field.

So the two halves of a chair genuinely want different things, and a good upholsterer gives them different things. The trick is only to keep the colour families close enough that the chair still reads as one object - which is why the seat pattern here sits in the same tonal range as the plain back rather than contrasting with it.

Frame: Solid teak throughout - back frame, seat rails, arms, arm supports and legs. No veneer over engineered board.

Construction: Waisted carved back frame with pierced crest, open arms on carved supports set back from the seat front, turned handgrips with carved scroll terminals, shaped seat rail with carved shell centre, cabriole legs with carved toes.

Upholstery: Buttoned back in a plain covering and a sprung seat in a patterned or textured covering, or one material throughout. All materials are your choice; we can source on your behalf.

Finish: Silver with the carving deeper in tone, as photographed. Gold or champagne leaf, painted tones or natural teak can be specified.

Dimensions: Custom sizes made to order - seat height, seat depth, back height and arm height set by you, confirmed in writing before production.

Available: Singly, in pairs or as a matched set.

Made: Handcrafted Indian luxury, produced to order by master Indian artisans.

Two different coverings need two different protections, and both get them - a breathable cover over the seat that will not compress the filling or mark a woven pattern, and a separate soft cover over the buttoned back that bears no pressure on the button points.

The pierced crest stands highest on the frame and is guarded with a rigid cover shaped over it rather than padded against.

Both arms project beyond the seat and take the first contact through a doorway; each is sleeved along its length with extra protection at the turned handgrip and the carved scroll behind it.

The carved shell at the centre of the seat rail sits at knee height and is bridged so nothing presses into it.

Each cabriole leg is padded individually with a rigid guard over the carved toe. The chair then goes into a rigid outer carton braced internally. Ordered as a set, each chair is crated separately rather than stacked. Dent-free arrival is guaranteed.

Free delivery is included anywhere in India, with no distance surcharge and nothing added at the end. Metros, tier-two cities and smaller towns are served on the same terms, and a set ships on the same free terms as a single chair.

Production begins once your dimensions, both coverings, carving depth and finish are confirmed in writing. Buttoning is slow hand work and follows the frame being carved and finished, so we give you an honest timeline and keep you updated as the chair progresses.

We dispatch through carriers experienced with carved and upholstered furniture, and send tracking details as soon as the chair leaves us.

On arrival our team brings the chair in, positions it, checks it sits firm and level on your floor and removes all packaging. Dent-free arrival is guaranteed - if anything is not right, tell us and we will resolve it.

The solid teak frame and joinery carry a 20-year warranty - the back frame, the seat rails, the arms and their supports, and every leg joint.

A tall waisted back concentrates load at its narrowest point. When someone leans back, the bending moment is greatest exactly where the frame is drawn in at the shoulders, so that section is cut from solid stock with the grain running through the waist rather than across it - and the carved edge work adds section there rather than removing it.

The open arm supports are jointed into deep seat rails, which is the joint that takes the load every time someone pushes up to stand.

The teak carries a lifetime warranty against termite damage for as long as you own the chair, from the oils in the timber rather than the finish over them.

If anything covered needs attention, send us your order details and photographs and our artisans will handle the repair or replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this product.

Buttoning gathers a surface into folds, and a pattern folded like that distorts and stops reading - so a buttoned back wants a plain material. A seat takes the most wear and the most light, and a pattern hides daily marks that a plain surface would show.

Yes, if you prefer. We will tell you honestly how it will look on the buttoned back and let you decide - and you can equally choose two entirely different materials from the ones shown.

Yes. The arms are open and set back from the seat front, so the chair pulls in properly and you can rise without lifting over an arm - which most heavily carved chairs do not allow.

To your measurements. Seat height, seat depth, back height and arm height are all set by you - tell us the table it will sit at, or who will use it most, and we will proportion it accordingly.

Yes. Chairs are built in the same run from the same stock so the carving and finish match, and we can make some with arms and some without so the armchairs sit at the head of the table.

Yes. Gold or champagne leaf, a painted colour you send us, or natural teak with a clear finish. The silver shown has the carving worked a shade deeper so the detail reads through tone.

Yes. Leather buttons beautifully on the back, and it wears well on a seat too. Send us a hide sample or a colour and we will work to it, or we can source leather on your behalf.

A 20-year warranty on the solid teak frame and joinery, including the waisted back frame, the arm supports and every leg joint, plus a lifetime warranty against termite damage on the teak.
