A carved teak designer high back chair with a waisted brocade back and ruched seat, made to order by Brown Rabbit.

A waisted back is a flattering shape in a room because it narrows at exactly the height where furniture usually looks heaviest. It also frames whoever is sitting in it, which is why this outline turns up in portrait chairs.

The brocade is the piece to choose carefully. A large repeat wants to be centred on the panel, and we set it out so a full motif runs up the middle of the back rather than being cut wherever the roll ends.

Height, width and the degree of the waist can all be adjusted, and the frame can be finished in other tones. Custom sizes are made to order and final measurements are confirmed in writing before production.

The ruching around the seat edge of this chair is a measured thing, not a gathered accident.

Ruche is made by taking a length of cloth considerably longer than the edge it will cover and pleating it down to fit. The ratio between those two lengths is what decides the look: too little and the gathers open into gaps when someone sits down; too much and the edge becomes a thick roll that swallows the carved apron below it.

Our upholsterers work to a fixed ratio for this design and mark the pleat positions on both the cloth and the frame before any stitching, so the gathers arrive evenly around the whole seat rather than bunching at the corners - which is where fullness always wants to collect.

The pleats are also set to fall vertically, in line with the legs beneath. A ruche that runs at a slight angle is the commonest fault in this kind of work and it makes an otherwise good chair look tired from the day it is finished.

Frame: solid teak throughout, hand-carved by master Indian artisans.

Structure: waisted tall back frame flaring at the shoulders and drawing in at the middle, carved and framed to the outline; carved apron; turned tapered legs.

Upholstery: brocade or fabric of your choosing, with the pattern centred up the back panel; seat edge ruched to a fixed fullness ratio with pleats marked out on cloth and frame and set to fall vertically.

Finish: ivory with gold on the carving as photographed; other finishes available.

Sizes: custom sizes made to order - final measurements confirmed in writing before production.

Photography: images on this page are photographs of the actual product, not renders.

Ruching is three-dimensional and compresses permanently if it is packed under pressure, so the seat edge is protected with a standoff rather than wrapped tight.

The whole chair is first covered with a clean breathable wrap. A shaped collar is then fitted around the seat, held clear of the ruched edge on foam blocks, so nothing bears on the gathers.

The carved framing around the back is capped along its outline, and the turned legs are wrapped and blocked so the chair's weight rests on its seat rails in transit.

Everything then goes into laminated foam, bubble wrap and a fitted wooden crate. Multi-layer protective packaging is standard and dent-free arrival is guaranteed.

Free delivery anywhere in India is included in the price - no separate freight charge, no distance loading, no small-town surcharge.

Production begins once your dimensions, fabric and finish are confirmed in writing. You get a realistic production window at that point and updates as the piece moves through frame work, carving, finishing, upholstery and crating.

The shipment is tracked and our team stays reachable throughout. Dent-free arrival is guaranteed and it is ours to honour.

Tell us your doorway and stair dimensions when you order and we plan the crate around them before the chair leaves the workshop.

The solid teak frame and its joinery carry a 20-year Brown Rabbit warranty - the seat rails, the leg joints, the waisted back frame and the apron and carving fixings.

A lifetime warranty against termite damage runs with the chair for as long as you own it, backed by teak's natural termite resistance and given in writing.

Ruched work can be remade and covers renewed over the years without disturbing the carved frame, and the pleat positions are recorded so the gathers can be reproduced at the same fullness.

Written warranty terms are issued with your order so the cover is agreed before production begins.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this product.

A back that flares at the shoulders, draws in at the middle and widens again toward the seat, so the outline is an hourglass rather than a rectangle. It narrows the chair exactly where furniture usually looks heaviest.

So a full motif runs up the centre line of the back rather than being cut wherever the roll ends. Send us the fabric and we set the pattern out before cutting.

It is cloth pleated down to fit an edge shorter than itself. It is worked to a fixed fullness ratio with pleat positions marked on both cloth and frame, so the gathers stay even and vertical rather than bunching at the corners.
