A gold velvet chair in solid teak, made to order by master Indian artisans and finished in hand-laid gilt. The tall waisted back is deep-buttoned; the arms roll outward and finish against carved scrolls; the apron carries a shell at its centre.

Tonal gold suits a room where the chair is meant to belong to the wall behind it rather than to stand against it - a dressing area, a bedroom corner, an entrance where the walls are already warm. In a cooler room the same frame with an ivory or grey velvet gives an entirely different result.

It is a single-seat statement chair, and it works alone as readily as in a pair. Ordered as two, both are carved together and cut from the same bolt of velvet so they match precisely.

Handcrafted Indian luxury, built to your dimensions, with a 20-year warranty on the frame and joinery, lifetime termite cover, free PAN-India delivery and guaranteed dent-free arrival.

Matching a gold velvet to a gilded frame is not a matter of holding two gold things side by side, because gilt does not have one colour. It shifts. Under a warm bulb it goes coppery; under daylight it cools toward brass; under the cold white light of a showroom it can look almost grey at the highlights.

So we do not judge the pairing on a workshop bench. A finished gilt offcut is cut from the same batch that will finish the chair, and the velvet swatches are laid against it under the lighting the chair will actually live in. Warm-lit rooms need a velvet with more yellow in it; daylight rooms take a cooler, paler gold or the frame will look orange next to it.

We ask clients what light the chair sits in before we ask what shade of gold they want, and if they are unsure, we send the offcut and the swatches to them to look at in the room itself.

The button colour is settled the same way, last, against the chosen velvet under the same light. Buttons are small, and they are the one place a slightly wrong gold announces itself.

Frame: solid teak throughout, hand-carved by master Indian artisans.

Finish: hand-laid gilt as photographed; silver, ebonised, walnut and clear natural teak also available.

Back: tall and waisted, deep-buttoned in a diamond grid that follows the narrowing of the back.

Upholstery: gold velvet with buttons matched to the cloth under the client's own lighting conditions.

Arms: outward-rolled and upholstered, finishing against carved scroll terminals.

Crest: carved and pierced above the back.

Apron: shell-centred carving across the front between the legs.

Legs: cabriole front legs ending in carved scroll feet.

Joinery: mortise and tenon with corner blocks at the seat rail.

Dimensions: custom sizes made to order - final measurements confirmed in writing before production.

Gilt and velvet both mark under pressure, so the chair is wrapped in soft non-abrasive sheeting laid on loosely rather than pulled tight. Nothing firmer than that sheet touches either the pile or the gilded surface at any point.

The carved crest, the arm scrolls and the shell at the centre of the apron are then padded individually with foam formed around each shape, so no strapping load ever bears on a gilded edge.

Bubble wrap, a corrugated shell and an outer crate cut to the chair follow, with corner protection at every load-bearing point. The crate takes the handling force; the frame does not.

Unpack from the top after cutting the strapping, taking the wrap off in the order it went on. If the velvet pile looks flattened where it was wrapped, brushing lightly along the pile lifts it back.

Delivery is free anywhere in India and the chair is guaranteed to arrive dent-free. If it is not right on arrival, correcting it is our cost, and we commit to that before you order.

Production starts when the velvet, the button colour, the finish and the measurements are confirmed in writing. We share the schedule at that point and update you as carving, gilding and upholstery complete.

Because gilt needs time to cure fully, dispatch follows curing rather than the last stroke of work. Tracking is shared as soon as the crate leaves us and our team agrees the delivery slot with you directly.

Check the chair with the delivery team present when the crate is opened. Tall backs need door and stair clearance, so send us your access measurements at the order stage and we build a back height that clears them.

The solid teak frame and joinery are warranted for 20 years. That is the part of a chair which decides whether it can be re-covered and kept, and it is the part we stand behind for two decades in writing.

A lifetime warranty against termite damage runs alongside. Teak's own oils are the reason we can offer it, and we issue it as a document with the chair rather than leaving it as a general assurance.

Both warranties are tied to your order and handed over on delivery, so you hold the record. If a covered fault arises, send us photographs first and we will arrange repair or replacement of the affected part.

Velvet, buttoning and the hand-laid gilt are wearing surfaces and sit outside the structural cover, but we re-cover and re-gild our own chairs at any age. Your specification stays on file, including the velvet reference and the light it was matched under, so a later re-cover can be repeated exactly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this product.

Yes. The gilded frame works just as well against ivory, deep red, emerald or a strong blue, and the effect changes completely - a contrasting velvet makes the carving read as an outline rather than as part of a tonal whole.

Against a finished gilt offcut from the same batch, viewed under the lighting the chair will live in. Gilt shifts colour with light, so warm-lit rooms take a yellower velvet and daylight rooms a cooler one. We can send the offcut and swatches to you.

Custom sizes made to order - final measurements confirmed in writing before production. Tell us the seat height, seat depth and overall back height, or the space it has to occupy, and we cut the frame to those figures.

Yes, solid teak throughout, hand-carved by master Indian artisans. Nothing is veneered, which is what allows the frame to be stripped and re-gilded, or the carving re-cut, decades from now.

Yes. The same carving takes silver, ebonised black, walnut or a clear natural teak finish, each laid by hand so the recesses stay open and the carved detail keeps its depth.

The solid teak frame and its joinery. Alongside it runs a lifetime warranty against termite damage. Both are issued in writing with the chair and tied to your order number.

Delivery is free anywhere in India. The chair travels in multi-layer protective packaging with the crest, arm scrolls and apron shell padded individually and the velvet wrapped so the pile is not crushed, and dent-free arrival is guaranteed.

Yes. Every image is a photograph of the chair we built, not a computer rendering, so the gilding, the buttoning and the velvet are shown as they came out of the workshop.
