An antique style leather armchair in solid teak, made to order by master Indian artisans. The back is high and shaped with a carved shell crest; the arms end in lion masks; the whole chair stands on four carved paw feet.

Buttoning runs through both the back and the seat cushion, which is what gives the chair its settled, worked-in look straight out of the workshop. The leather shown is a mid tan that will darken gently with light and use, as leather does.

It suits a study, a library, a reading corner or an office where the furniture is meant to look established rather than new. Ordered as a pair with a low table between, it makes a self-contained sitting area in a corner of a larger room.

Handcrafted Indian luxury, built to your dimensions, with a 20-year warranty on the frame and joinery, lifetime termite cover, free PAN-India delivery and guaranteed dent-free arrival.

A chair on four carved paws has a problem a chair on flat pads does not: a paw is a sculpted shape, and the point it actually stands on is not obvious. Cut all four to the same length on the bench and the chair can still rock on a real floor, because the contact point on a curved paw sits wherever the carving happens to bottom out.

So the paws are finished last, and they are finished on a levelling slab rather than by measurement. The assembled chair is stood on a flat plate, weighted at the seat, and the carver scribes a line around each paw from the plate itself. Anything below that line comes off. The scribing tool does the arithmetic, so the four contact points end up in one plane regardless of how the carving fell.

Then it is tested off the slab, on an ordinary floor, and turned a quarter turn and tested again. A chair that sits still in one orientation and rocks in another has a twisted frame, not an uneven paw, and that is worth finding before the upholstery goes on.

Nobody looks at the underside of a paw. They notice the chair not moving.

Frame: solid teak throughout, hand-carved by master Indian artisans.

Crest: carved shell and scrollwork above a moulded back surround.

Arms: upholstered inner and outer faces finishing against carved lion masks at the front.

Back and seat: both deep-buttoned in leather.

Apron: pierced and carved front and side, cut from the solid.

Feet: four carved lion paws, scribed level on a flat plate under load after assembly.

Joinery: mortise and tenon with corner blocks at the seat rails.

Finish: hand-applied walnut tone as photographed; natural, limed, ebonised, gilt and silver also available.

Leather: your own hide or ours; fabric alternatives available on request.

Dimensions: custom sizes made to order - final measurements confirmed in writing before production.

Paw feet and lion masks are the parts that get knocked, so both are dealt with first. Each paw is wrapped and then boxed in shaped foam that carries the weight on the leg above rather than on the carved toes; each mask is padded around its full profile.

The leather itself is wrapped in soft non-abrasive sheeting before anything firmer is applied, so no packing material rubs against the hide or presses a button head into the surface.

Over that go a full bubble layer, a corrugated shell and an outer crate cut to the chair's dimensions. The pierced apron is filled rather than bridged so strapping tension cannot bear on the fretwork.

To unpack, cut the strapping, lift the shell clear and take the wrapping off from the top down, leaving the foot boxes until last so the chair stays supported while you work.

Delivery is free anywhere in India and arrival is guaranteed dent-free. If anything is amiss when the crate is opened, putting it right is our cost, and that is committed before you place the order.

Production starts once the leather, the finish and the measurements are confirmed in writing. We share the schedule then and keep you updated through carving, levelling, upholstery and finishing.

The chair is dispatched once the polish has fully cured. Tracking follows as soon as the crate leaves us, and our team fixes the delivery slot with you directly rather than through an automated message.

Open the crate with the delivery team present and check the chair while they are still there. If your access is tight, send door and stair measurements at the order stage and we build to a size that clears them.

The solid teak frame and its joinery carry a 20-year warranty. On a chair with a carved apron and paw feet, the frame is doing structural work all the way down to the floor, and that whole structure is what the warranty covers.

A lifetime warranty against termite damage runs alongside it. Teak's natural oil content is what makes that commitment reasonable, and we set it down in writing rather than leaving it implied.

Both warranties are issued with the chair and linked to your order, so the paperwork sits with you rather than in a file you cannot reach. If a covered fault appears, send photographs and we arrange repair or replacement of the part concerned.

Leather, buttoning and the hand-applied finish are surfaces that wear with use and are treated separately, but we re-upholster and re-polish our own chairs at any age. Your specification stays on file, so a re-cover in fifteen years can be matched exactly to the original.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this product.

No - it is a new chair made in an antique style, hand-carved in solid teak by master Indian artisans. That means you get the older look with new joinery, a new frame warranty and the ability to specify your own size, leather and finish.

Yes. Send us your own hide or pick from our range. The mid tan shown here darkens gently with light and use; a deeper hide starts where this one will end up, if you prefer that from day one.

Yes, on the chair as photographed. If you would rather have a plain seat cushion under a buttoned back, we build it that way - the buttoning grid and depth are part of your specification.

Custom sizes made to order - final measurements confirmed in writing before production. Give us seat height, seat depth and overall back height, or the dimensions of the space, and we cut the frame accordingly.

The paws are finished after assembly. The chair is stood on a flat plate under load and each paw is scribed level from the plate itself, so all four contact points end up in one plane no matter how the carving fell.

20 years on the solid teak frame and joinery, and a lifetime warranty against termite damage. Both are issued in writing with the chair and tied to your order number.
