A gilded carved teak chair in blue velvet with a damask seat, made to order by Brown Rabbit.

Two-fabric chairs give you more to work with in a room. The velvet can pick up a wall or a curtain and the seat damask can pick up a rug or a cushion, so the chair ties two things together rather than matching one.

The arms are wide and low, which makes this an easy chair to sit sideways in - useful in a bedroom or a study, where a chair often gets used at an angle to whatever is in front of it.

Either fabric can be changed independently, now or later. Custom sizes are made to order and final measurements are confirmed in writing before production.

Where two fabrics meet on one chair, the seam between them has to be somewhere the design already changes - never in the middle of a plain surface.

Here the change happens at the front edge of the seat cushion, which is a real edge in the chair's construction: the platform stops, the cushion begins, and the eye already expects a line there. So the damask is confined to the cushion and the velvet stops where the cushion sits, and neither fabric ever has to explain itself.

The second decision is which fabric goes where, and it is settled by wear rather than by looks. A seat cushion takes more use than any other part of a chair, and a patterned cloth carries the marks of use far better than a plain one, because the pattern breaks up any unevenness. Velvet on the back and arms stays looking new for longer because it is touched less.

So the arrangement that happens to look best is also the one that ages best. That is usually a sign a traditional formula is doing more than one job at once, which is generally why it became traditional.

Frame: solid teak throughout, hand-carved by master Indian artisans and gilded.

Structure: shaped back frame with shell crest; wide rolled arms on carved scroll supports; flowered carved apron; carved cabriole legs.

Upholstery: buttoned velvet back and arms with a patterned damask seat cushion, the fabric change falling at the cushion's own front edge; both fabrics of your choosing and independently changeable.

Finish: gold as photographed; silver, champagne, ivory and natural teak available.

Sizes: custom sizes made to order - final measurements confirmed in writing before production.

Photography: images on this page are photographs of the actual product, not renders.

Velvet and a patterned cushion need the same protection for different reasons - one crushes, the other creases.

The chair's velvet surfaces are covered with a clean breathable wrap and the buttoned back is given a standoff board on foam blocks so nothing presses into the pile.

The damask cushion travels wrapped separately and supported flat, so it arrives with its shape and its pattern lying true rather than folded.

The gilded crest, arm scrolls and apron are capped individually, and the cabriole legs are wrapped and blocked. Everything then goes into laminated foam, bubble wrap and a fitted wooden crate. Multi-layer protective packaging is standard and dent-free arrival is guaranteed.

Free delivery anywhere in India is included in the price - no separate freight charge, no distance loading, no small-town surcharge.

Production begins once your dimensions, both fabrics and the finish are confirmed in writing. You get a realistic production window at that point and updates as the piece moves through frame work, carving, gilding, upholstery and crating.

The shipment is tracked and our team stays reachable throughout. Dent-free arrival is guaranteed and it is ours to honour.

Tell us your doorway and stair dimensions when you order and we plan the crate around them before the chair leaves the workshop.

The solid teak frame and its joinery carry a 20-year Brown Rabbit warranty - the seat rails, the cabriole leg joints, the back frame, the arm supports and the crest and apron fixings.

A lifetime warranty against termite damage runs with the chair for as long as you own it, backed by teak's natural termite resistance and given in writing.

Because the seat cushion is a separate covered element, it can be recovered on its own - so the part that wears fastest can be renewed without touching the velvet or the frame. We can do that work whenever it is wanted.

Written warranty terms are issued with your order so the cover is agreed before production begins.
