A carved teak wing chair with a buttoned barrel back, gilded scroll frame and embroidered seat, made to order by Brown Rabbit.

The wings are set at an angle that decides how enclosing the chair feels. Brought further forward it becomes a quiet chair for reading in a corner; opened out it becomes a sociable chair for a drawing room. We draw the angle to suit how you intend to use it.

Seat height matters more on a chair than on a sofa, because you get in and out of it far more often. Tell us the height of the person who will use it most and we set the seat accordingly.

The embroidered seat panel can be supplied as shown, replaced with plain cloth, or made in a fabric you provide. Custom sizes are made to order and final measurements are confirmed in writing before production.

A barrel back is curved in two directions at once, and that is the difficulty: it curves in plan, wrapping around the sitter, and it also leans back as it rises.

Buttoning that surface is not the same problem as buttoning a flat panel. On a compound curve the distance between two button positions changes depending on which way you measure it, so a grid set out to equal spacings will come out visibly stretched at the outer edges of the barrel and compressed at the centre.

Our upholsterers set the grid out on the curved timber frame itself, walking a flexible rule over the actual surface rather than measuring across it, and mark each button where it will truly fall. The covering is then cut with graduated fullness so the diamonds between the buttons come out even to the eye across the whole barrel.

The gilded scroll that runs down each front edge is fitted last, after the buttoning is complete, so it lands exactly on the edge of the upholstery with no gap - which is only possible in that order.

Frame: solid teak throughout, hand-carved by master Indian artisans.

Structure: barrel back frame curved in plan and raked in section; carved gilded scrolls down each front edge; carved cabriole legs.

Buttoning: grid set out on the curved frame with a flexible rule, with graduated fullness so the diamonds read even across the compound curve.

Seat: sprung and webbed platform with an embroidered centre panel as photographed, or plain cloth.

Finish: pale frame with gilded carving; other finishes available.

Upholstery: fabric of your choosing.

Sizes: custom sizes made to order - final measurements confirmed in writing before production.

Photography: images on this page are photographs of the actual product, not renders.

A buttoned barrel back needs an air gap around it, because sustained pressure anywhere on the curve leaves a mark in the covering.

So the back is covered with a clean breathable wrap and then protected by a shaped standoff held clear of the surface on foam blocks at the frame edges - nothing rests on the buttons or the pleats between them.

The gilded scrolls at the front edges are capped individually, since they stand proud of the upholstery and are the first thing a crate meets.

The cabriole legs are wrapped and blocked so the chair's weight rests on its seat rails in transit. Everything then goes into laminated foam, bubble wrap and a fitted wooden crate. Multi-layer protective packaging is standard and dent-free arrival is guaranteed.

Delivery anywhere in India is free and included in the price - no separate freight charge, no distance loading, no small-town surcharge.

Production begins once your dimensions, seat height, fabric and finish are confirmed in writing. You get a realistic production window at that point and updates as the piece moves through frame work, carving, gilding, upholstery and crating.

The shipment is tracked and our team stays reachable throughout. Dent-free arrival is guaranteed and it is ours to honour.

Tell us your doorway and stair dimensions when you order - a barrel-backed chair is deeper than it looks from the front, and we plan the crate accordingly.

The solid teak frame and its joinery carry a 20-year Brown Rabbit warranty - the seat rails, the cabriole leg joints, the curved back frame and the scroll fixings.

A lifetime warranty against termite damage runs with the chair for as long as you own it, backed by teak's natural termite resistance and given in writing.

Buttoning can be re-tensioned and covers remade over the years without disturbing the carved and gilded frame, and the button positions are recorded on the frame so the grid can be reproduced exactly.

Written warranty terms are issued with your order so the cover is agreed before production begins.
