A barrel chair in gilded solid teak with a curved wrap-around back and a loose floral seat cushion. The enclosing shape makes it a natural single chair - one at a dressing table, one in a bedroom corner, a pair angled towards each other in a drawing room, or one beside a bed where a full armchair would be too wide.

Master Indian artisans build the frame by hand from seasoned solid teak. The curved back is the difficult part of a chair like this and the reason it feels different to sit in: the back and arms are one sweep rather than three separate elements, so there is support wherever you lean.

The chair is made to order. Choose both fabrics separately, choose gold, silver, champagne or plain polished teak for the frame, and set the dimensions. Custom sizes are made to order and final measurements are confirmed in writing before production. Behind it stand a 20-year warranty on the teak frame and joinery, a lifetime warranty against termite damage, free PAN-India delivery with guaranteed dent-free arrival, and multi-layer protective packaging.

Run your eye around the front edge of the seat on this chair. There is a thin raised line of fabric following the curve - a welt, or piping - and getting it to go round that curve without a single pucker is the quietest skill on the whole piece.

Fabric has almost no give along the grain. Cut a strip straight from the roll, wrap it around a cord and try to bend it around a curved seat front, and it fights back: the outer edge is too short, so it gathers into little pleats every few inches. On a straight sofa rail nobody would notice. On a barrel chair, where nothing is straight, it is all you would see.

So the strip is cut on the bias - at forty-five degrees across the weave, where the cloth has stretch in both directions at once. Now the outer edge can lengthen and the inner edge can shorten as the strip turns, and the welt lies flat all the way round. It costs more fabric, because bias strips come off the roll diagonally and the leftovers are unusable triangles.

The finished chair simply looks smooth. That is the entire reward, and it is worth the waste.

Frame: solid teak throughout, hand-carved by master Indian artisans, with traditional joinery at every junction.

Back: continuous curved barrel back sweeping into both arms, upholstered inside and out.

Show wood: gilded top rail with a carved centre crest, gilded scrolled arm terminals, carved centre to the front rail.

Seat: loose cushion over a padded platform.

Legs: cabriole front legs with carved knees and scrolled feet; shaped and gilded rear legs.

Upholstery: maroon woven damask on the barrel back and a cream floral on the seat cushion, as photographed. Both can be changed independently, including to your own material.

Finish: hand-laid gold leaf on the show wood. Silver, champagne, antiqued gold or plain polished teak are all available.

Size: custom sizes made to order - final measurements confirmed in writing before production.

Photography: images on this page are of the actual product, not renders.

A barrel chair has no flat sides, which changes how it has to be packed. A square carton pressed against a curved gilded rail concentrates all the load on two small points, so the packing is built to spread it instead.

Foam collars are shaped around the curved top rail, the arm terminals, the carved knees and the feet. A soft non-abrasive layer covers all the gilded show wood first, so nothing firmer ever touches gold leaf. Corrugated panels then build up around the curve until the chair sits inside a rigid shell with even contact all round, and the outer carton is edge-reinforced so transit weight is carried by the packaging rather than the frame.

The loose seat cushion is wrapped and boxed separately so its edges stay square and the floral face is not compressed under the chair. Both fabrics get a breathable cover that keeps dust out without holding moisture in. Everything unwraps by hand, with no blades needed anywhere near the finish.

Free delivery anywhere in India is included in the price. No zone pricing, no distance surcharge, no freight added at checkout - the chair costs the same delivered to Indore as to Kolkata.

Dent-free arrival is guaranteed. It leaves the workshop in multi-layer protective packaging, moves with handlers briefed on gilded and carved furniture, and is checked at each transfer point. If anything is wrong when you open it, tell us and we make it right - the guarantee is ours to honour, not the transporter's.

Since the chair is made to order, production begins once your fabrics, finish and measurements are confirmed in writing. We share a timeline at that point and keep you updated as it moves through frame-making, gilding and upholstery, then tell you when it dispatches and roughly when it will reach you.

The solid teak frame and its joinery carry a 20-year warranty. On a barrel chair that means the curved back frame and the joints that hold its shape, the arm structure, the seat frame and the legs. If a joint opens or a frame member fails within those twenty years, we repair or replace it.

A lifetime warranty against termite damage runs alongside it, with no end date at all. Teak's natural oils are what deter termites, and our seasoning and finishing process is built to preserve them, so we are willing to guarantee the timber for as long as you keep the chair.

We can write terms like these because the chair is made entirely in our own workshop, by the master Indian artisans who make every piece we sell, from timber we season ourselves. Your warranty is registered automatically with the order - no forms, no cards. If you ever need it, your order number opens the claim.
