An antique style chair in solid teak, hand-carved and upholstered by master Indian artisans in a white and gold finish, made entirely to your measurements.

The white frame makes it easier to place than a gilded or dark chair, because the cloth decides the colour - so the same frame suits a blue room, a green one or a neutral one depending on what you upholster it in.

The open arms mean it pulls in at a table, and the shaped back gives support without the bulk of a high-backed chair.

Seat height, seat depth, back height and arm height are all set by you.

Order singly, in pairs or as a set. Photographs on this page show the actual chair our artisans produced, not a computer render.

Look at the back legs. They do not drop straight down from the seat - they lean backwards, away from the chair, and they are straight rather than shaped while the front legs are carved cabrioles.

That asymmetry is deliberate and it is about not falling over.

When someone leans back in a chair, their weight shifts behind the back edge of the seat. If the back legs are vertical, the whole chair pivots on the point where they meet the floor and starts to tip - which is why so many chairs end up rocking on two legs whether anyone intended it or not.

Raking the back legs moves the floor contact point further back, behind the line of the weight. The tipping point moves with it, and the chair simply stays down. The further the rake, the more secure it is.

What limits it is the room the chair takes up and how it looks. A heavily raked leg makes a chair look like it is sitting back on its heels, and it stops the chair being pushed close to a wall. So the rake is a judgement, and it is set against the height of the back - the taller the back, the further back the weight can go, and the more rake it needs.

Making them straight rather than carved is the second half of the decision. A raked leg is already working at an angle to the load; giving it a curve as well would put a bend where the timber wants to be doing one job in one direction.

Frame: Solid teak throughout - back frame, seat rails, arms, arm supports and legs. No veneer over engineered board.

Construction: Carved cabriole front legs with scrolled toes and straight raked back legs, waisted carved back frame with carved crest, open scrolled arms on carved supports set back from the seat front, shaped carved seat rail.

Upholstery: Shaped back and sprung seat in brocade or a material of your choice; we can source on your behalf.

Finish: White with gold-picked carved edges, as photographed. Any tone or gilding level can be specified.

Dimensions: Custom sizes made to order - seat height, seat depth, back height and arm height set by you, confirmed in writing before production.

Available: Singly, in pairs or as a matched set.

Made: Handcrafted Indian luxury, produced to order by master Indian artisans.

The raked back legs project behind the seat and are the first part of the chair to meet a wall or a doorframe when it is carried; each is sleeved along its full length with a rigid guard at the foot.

The carved crest above the back stands highest and is guarded with a rigid cover shaped over it rather than padded against.

A white finish shows a scuff as clearly as any surface can, so the wrap laid directly against the frame is soft, lint-free and applied without tension anywhere it could burnish, with additional foam over the gold-picked carved edges.

Patterned upholstery is covered in a breathable protective layer applied without compression, so no crease is set into the brocade in transit.

Both arms project beyond the seat and are sleeved along their length with extra protection at the rolled terminals, and each carved cabriole front leg is padded with a rigid guard over the scrolled toe.

The chair then goes into a rigid outer carton braced internally. Ordered as a set, each chair is crated separately rather than stacked. Dent-free arrival is guaranteed.

Free delivery is included anywhere in India, with no distance surcharge and nothing added at the end. Metros, tier-two cities and smaller towns are served on the same terms, and a set ships on the same free terms as a single chair.

Production begins once your dimensions, fabric, carving depth and finish are confirmed in writing. The frame is carved and finished before upholstery begins, and patterned cloth is laid out on the finished frame before cutting - we give you an honest timeline and keep you updated as the chair progresses.

We dispatch through carriers experienced with carved and upholstered furniture, and send tracking details as soon as the chair leaves us.

On arrival our team brings the chair in, positions it, checks it sits firm and level on your floor and removes all packaging. Dent-free arrival is guaranteed - if anything is not right, tell us and we will resolve it.

The solid teak frame and joinery carry a 20-year warranty - the back frame, the seat rails, the arms and their supports, and every leg joint.

The raked back legs are where a chair either survives or does not. Each one meets the seat rail at an angle rather than square, which makes the mortise longer on one face than the other and puts the load across the joint rather than straight down it. Ours are cut from solid teak with the grain running along the rake, so the fibre follows the direction the load actually travels.

The open arm supports are jointed into deep seat rails, since that joint carries the load every time someone pushes up to stand and has no leg beneath it.

The teak carries a lifetime warranty against termite damage for as long as you own the chair, from the oils in the timber rather than the paint over them.

If anything covered needs attention, send us your order details and photographs and our artisans will handle the repair or replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this product.

So the chair stays down when someone leans back. Raking the back legs moves the floor contact point behind the line of the weight, which moves the tipping point with it. Vertical back legs are what make chairs rock onto two legs.

A raked leg is already working at an angle to the load, so it is kept straight and lets the timber do one job in one direction. The front legs carry weight vertically, which is where a carved cabriole belongs.

Yes. The frame is deliberately white with only the carved edges in gold, so the cloth decides the colour of the chair - the same frame suits a blue room, a green one or a neutral one depending on what you upholster it in.

Yes. The arms are open and set back from the seat front, so it pulls in properly and you can rise without lifting over an arm.

To your measurements. Seat height, seat depth, back height and arm height are all set by you - tell us the table it will sit at, or who will use it most.

Yes. The carved edges can be finished white so the carving reads through shadow alone, picked out in gold as shown, or gilded more fully. It is your choice before finishing begins.

Yes. Chairs are built in the same run from the same stock so the carving and finish match, and we can make some with arms and some without so the armchairs sit at the ends.

A 20-year warranty on the solid teak frame and joinery, including the angled back leg joints and the arm supports, plus a lifetime warranty against termite damage on the teak.
