A cane back chair in solid teak, hand-carved, gilded and caned by master Indian artisans, made entirely to your measurements.

It is a low, open chair - the sort that works in a bedroom corner, a dressing area, a hall, or in pairs facing a sofa where a solid high-backed chair would block the room.

The cane panel is woven by hand into the frame rather than dropped in as a pre-made sheet, which is what allows it to follow the curve of the balloon back.

Seat height, seat depth, back height and arm height are all set by you, and you choose both the seat fabric and the tone of the cane.

Photographs on this page show the actual chairs our artisans produced, not a computer render. Order singly or as a pair.

Caning is one of the few crafts in furniture that has never been improved on by machine, and the reason is that a real cane panel is woven into the chair rather than made separately and fitted.

A row of small holes is drilled around the inside of the frame. The caner then works strand by strand through those holes - first one direction, then the other, then diagonally both ways - building six layers that lock each other in place. Nothing is glued. The panel holds because of the way it is interlaced and because every strand is tensioned against its neighbours.

That is what allows cane to follow a curve. This back is a balloon shape, wider at the shoulders and drawn in below, and a pre-woven sheet pressed into a groove would ripple or pull flat across it. A hand-woven panel simply takes the shape it is worked into.

Tension is judged by feel. Too slack and the panel sags the first time someone leans on it; too tight and it will not accommodate the movement of a chair in use. A caner learns this by hand over years - there is no gauge for it.

Finished properly, the surface is springy rather than rigid, which is exactly what you want against your back, and it can be rewoven decades later without the frame being disturbed.

Frame: Solid teak throughout - balloon back frame, seat rails, arms and legs. No veneer over engineered board.

Cane: Hand-woven six-way cane panel worked strand by strand into the drilled back frame, not a pre-made sheet. Tone chosen with you.

Construction: Carved rose garlands running the full length of both arms onto the seat rail, carved rosette arm terminals, carved seat rail following the round seat, cabriole legs with carved toes.

Upholstery: Padded lower back and deeply stuffed round seat in fabric of your choice; we can source fabric on your behalf.

Finish: Hand-applied gold leaf, burnished. Silver or champagne leaf, painted tones or natural teak can be specified.

Dimensions: Custom sizes made to order - final measurements confirmed in writing before production.

Available: Singly or in pairs.

Made: Handcrafted Indian luxury, produced to order by master Indian artisans.

The cane panel is the one surface on this chair that must never take a load, so a rigid shaped guard is fitted over the whole back opening, spanning from frame edge to frame edge, and nothing bears on the weave at any point.

The gilded carving is covered first in a soft, lint-free wrap laid on without tension, since burnished leaf marks under pressure long before timber does.

The rose garlands run the full length of both arms and stand proudest on the piece. Foam is shaped to bridge over each garland along its whole run, bearing on the arm body beneath rather than onto the roses, and the carved rosette terminals get individual rigid guards.

The upholstered seat is covered in a breathable protective layer that will not compress the filling.

Each cabriole leg is padded with a rigid guard over the carved toe. The chair then goes into a rigid outer carton braced internally. Ordered as a pair, each chair is crated separately rather than stacked. Dent-free arrival is guaranteed.

Free delivery is included anywhere in India, with no distance surcharge and nothing added at the end. Metros, tier-two cities and smaller towns are served on the same terms, and a pair ships on the same free terms as a single chair.

Production begins once your dimensions, fabric, cane tone, carving depth and finish are confirmed in writing. Caning is done after the frame is carved, gilded and cured, and it is slow hand work, so we give you an honest timeline and keep you updated as the chair moves through frame making, carving, gilding, caning and upholstery.

We dispatch through carriers experienced with carved, gilded and caned furniture, and send tracking details as soon as the chair leaves us.

On arrival our team brings the chair in, positions it, checks it sits firm and level and removes all packaging. Dent-free arrival is guaranteed - if anything is not right, tell us and we will resolve it.

The solid teak frame and joinery carry a 20-year warranty - the balloon back frame, the seat rails, the arms and every leg joint.

The back frame carries a specific demand on this design. A caned panel puts an inward pull on the frame all the way around it - every tensioned strand is trying to draw the sides together - so the frame has to be strong enough to resist that permanently, not just at the moment it is woven. Ours is jointed solid teak, sized for that load.

The arms are covered too. Each sweeps a long way forward from the back frame with no support beneath its front end, so it is jointed into the back and into the seat rail rather than relying on the joint at one end alone.

The teak carries a lifetime warranty against termite damage for as long as you own the chair. Cane can be rewoven decades from now without the frame being disturbed - which is one of the reasons it is worth having.

If anything covered needs attention, send us your order details and photographs and our artisans will handle the repair or replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this product.

Yes - strand by strand through holes drilled around the frame, in six interlocking layers with nothing glued. That is what allows it to follow the curve of the balloon back, which a pre-made sheet cannot do without rippling.

It is one of the reasons to choose it. Cane breathes, so it stays cool to lean against where a solid upholstered back holds heat, and it lets light and air through so the chair reads open in a room.

Yes. A hand-woven panel can be rewoven decades from now without the frame being taken apart or refinished - which is one of the real advantages of caning done properly.

Yes, if you prefer. The same frame can be built with an upholstered panel in place of the cane, or with cane in a larger or smaller area of the back. It is decided with you before production.

Yes to both. Send us a material, a colour or a photograph of your room for the seat and lower back, and we will show you cane tones from pale natural to deeper honey.

Yes. Silver or champagne leaf, a painted colour you send us, or natural teak with a clear finish. All leaf is hand-applied over a prepared ground and burnished by hand.

Yes - a pair facing a sofa is the usual arrangement for a chair this low and open. Both are built in the same run from the same stock so the carving and gilding match, and each is crated separately.

A 20-year warranty on the solid teak frame and joinery, including the balloon back frame that carries the cane tension, both arms and every leg joint, plus a lifetime warranty against termite damage on the teak.
