An arm chair in solid teak, hand-carved and upholstered by master Indian artisans in ivory with gold-highlighted carving, made entirely to your measurements.

The sprung seat is what makes it a chair to use rather than to look at. It is more work than a foam pad and it lasts a great deal longer, and it is the difference people notice within a few seconds of sitting down.

The open arms mean you can rise without lifting over them, and the buttoned back gives support across the shoulders.

Seat height, seat depth, back height and arm height are all set by you, and the back and seat can be covered in the same material or in two as shown.

Order singly or in pairs. Photographs on this page show the actual chair our artisans produced, not a computer render.

A sprung seat and a foam seat feel different in the first second, and the reason is what happens underneath.

Foam compresses. Press it and it squashes downward, and the more weight you put on it the more it flattens - which is why a foam seat feels supportive when it is new and progressively less so as the cells break down.

A spring seat works the other way. Coil springs are set upright on a webbed base and tied to each other, and to the frame, with twine running in eight directions from every spring - across, along and diagonally both ways. Sitting down does not squash them; it compresses them evenly against each other, and they push back.

The tying is the whole craft. Each spring has to be tensioned so it sits slightly lower at the edges and highest at the centre, so the finished seat is domed rather than flat, and so that no single spring can travel further than its neighbours. Get one knot wrong and that spring sinks first, and within a year there is a hollow in the seat.

Above the springs go a canvas, then a layer of stuffing, then the cover - so what you actually sit on is three separate systems working together.

It is the reason a properly sprung chair from a hundred years ago is still comfortable, and a foam one from ten years ago usually is not.

Frame: Solid teak throughout - back frame, seat rails, arms, arm supports and legs. No veneer over engineered board.

Construction: Carved shaped back frame with fluted shell crest, open scroll arms on carved supports set back from the seat front, carved rose and foliage apron across the full width, cabriole legs with carved toes.

Upholstery: Deep-buttoned back and a domed hand-tied coil sprung seat, with the back and seat in the same material or in two. Fabrics of your choice; we can source on your behalf.

Finish: Ivory with soft gold-highlighted carving, as photographed. Any tone or gilding level can be specified.

Dimensions: Custom sizes made to order - seat height, seat depth, back height and arm height set by you, confirmed in writing before production.

Available: Singly or in pairs.

Made: Handcrafted Indian luxury, produced to order by master Indian artisans.

A sprung seat is domed and slightly springy, which means it must never be crated under compression - anything strapped across it would flatten the crown it was built to have. The seat is covered in a breathable protective layer only, and all bracing bears on the frame around it.

The buttoned back is covered so no pressure falls on the button points, since a compressed button leaves a mark in the covering that takes time to recover.

The carved shell crest stands highest on the frame and is guarded with a rigid cover shaped over it rather than padded against.

Both arms project beyond the seat and take contact first through a doorway; each is sleeved along its length with additional protection at the rolled terminal.

The carved apron runs the full width at knee height and is bridged so nothing presses into the roses, and each cabriole leg is padded with a rigid guard over the carved toe.

The chair then goes into a rigid outer carton braced internally. Ordered as a pair, each is crated separately. Dent-free arrival is guaranteed.

Free delivery is included anywhere in India, with no distance surcharge and nothing added at the end. Metros, tier-two cities and smaller towns are served on the same terms, and a pair ships on the same free terms as a single chair.

Production begins once your dimensions, fabrics, carving depth and finish are confirmed in writing. Springing and buttoning are both slow hand processes and follow the frame being carved and finished - we give you an honest timeline and keep you updated as the chair progresses.

We dispatch through carriers experienced with carved and upholstered furniture, and send tracking details as soon as the chair leaves us.

On arrival our team brings the chair in, positions it, checks it sits firm and level on your floor and removes all packaging. Dent-free arrival is guaranteed - if anything is not right, tell us and we will resolve it.

The solid teak frame and joinery carry a 20-year warranty - the back frame, the seat rails, the arms and their supports, and every leg joint.

A sprung seat puts a different load into a frame than a foam one does. The springs are tied down to the seat rails, which means the rails are permanently under tension pulling inward as well as carrying weight downward - so they are cut deeper from solid stock and jointed rather than screwed at the corners.

The open arm supports are jointed into those same rails, since that joint takes the load every time someone pushes up to stand and has no leg directly beneath it.

The teak carries a lifetime warranty against termite damage for as long as you own the chair, from the oils in the timber rather than the paint over them.

If anything covered needs attention, send us your order details and photographs and our artisans will handle the repair or replacement.
