A bedroom chair in solid teak, hand-carved and upholstered by master Indian artisans in a champagne finish, made entirely to your measurements.

It suits the jobs a bedroom chair actually does - sitting to put shoes on, a place to leave clothes at night, somewhere to read in a corner - which is why the arms are smooth and the seat is a comfortable height to stand up from rather than a low lounging one.

The pale champagne frame and ivory cloth keep it quiet in a room where the bed is already the largest thing.

Seat height, seat depth, back height and arm height are all set by you. For a bedroom chair the seat height is worth thinking about, and we will build it to suit whoever uses it most.

Order singly or in pairs. Photographs on this page show the actual chair our artisans produced, not a computer render.

There is a rule in chair making that is almost never stated: carving stops where the body starts.

A carved surface is a series of raised edges and hollows. That is exactly what makes it worth looking at, and exactly what makes it wrong under a forearm. Rest your arm on a carved arm rest for ten minutes and the pattern is pressed into your skin; rest it there every evening for years and the high points of the carving wear smooth and shiny while the hollows stay sharp, and the carving ends up looking damaged rather than used.

So the arm rest on a well-made chair is left plain, rounded over on both edges, and finished smooth - and the carving is placed on the arm support below it, on the terminal in front of it and on the sprays behind it, where hands do not settle.

The same logic runs through the whole chair. The crest is carved because nobody leans on the top of a chair back. The seat rail is carved because it sits below the seat. The front of the arm is carved because the hand grips there briefly rather than resting.

Getting it wrong is a common fault on decorative chairs, and it is easy to check for: look at where the chair is carved and ask whether you would want to sit against it.

Frame: Solid teak throughout - back frame, seat rails, arms, arm supports and legs. No veneer over engineered board.

Construction: Plain rounded arm rests left uncarved and finished smooth, carved crest above a shaped waisted back, carved sprays at the arm-to-seat junctions, carved shell seat rail, cabriole front legs and raked back legs.

Upholstery: Shaped back and sprung seat in damask or a material of your choice; we can source on your behalf.

Finish: Soft champagne with the carving a shade brighter, as photographed. Any tone or gilding level can be specified.

Dimensions: Custom sizes made to order - seat height, seat depth, back height and arm height set by you, confirmed in writing before production.

Available: Singly, in pairs or as a matched set.

Made: Handcrafted Indian luxury, produced to order by master Indian artisans.

The smooth arm rests are the most visible surfaces on this frame and the least forgiving - a scuff on a plain rounded surface has no carving to disappear into. Each arm is sleeved along its full length in a soft, lint-free wrap laid on without tension, with foam over it.

The carved crest stands highest and is guarded with a rigid cover shaped over it rather than padded against.

The carved sprays at the arm-to-seat junctions and the shell on the seat rail are bridged so nothing presses into the carving.

Upholstery is covered in a breathable protective layer applied without compression, so no crease is set into the damask in transit.

The raked back legs project behind the seat and are the first part of the chair to meet a wall when it is carried; each is padded with a rigid guard at the foot, as are the carved cabriole front legs.

The chair then goes into a rigid outer carton braced internally. Ordered as a pair, each is crated separately. Dent-free arrival is guaranteed.

Free delivery is included anywhere in India, with no distance surcharge and nothing added at the end. Metros, tier-two cities and smaller towns are served on the same terms, and a pair ships on the same free terms as a single chair.

Production begins once your dimensions, fabric, carving depth and finish are confirmed in writing. The frame is carved and finished before upholstery begins - we give you an honest timeline then and keep you updated as the chair progresses.

We dispatch through carriers experienced with carved and upholstered furniture, and send tracking details as soon as the chair leaves us.

On arrival our team brings the chair in, positions it, checks it sits firm and level on your floor and removes all packaging. Dent-free arrival is guaranteed - if anything is not right, tell us and we will resolve it.

The solid teak frame and joinery carry a 20-year warranty - the back frame, the seat rails, the arms and their supports, and every leg joint.

The arms sweep forward from the back frame with nothing beneath their front ends, so each is jointed into the back and into the seat rail rather than relying on a single joint. That is the connection that takes the load whenever someone leans on an arm to stand.

The raked back legs meet the seat rails at an angle rather than square, so each is cut from solid teak with the grain running along the rake, following the direction the load actually travels.

The teak carries a lifetime warranty against termite damage for as long as you own the chair, from the oils in the timber rather than the finish over them.

If anything covered needs attention, send us your order details and photographs and our artisans will handle the repair or replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this product.

Because carving belongs where the body does not touch. A carved arm rest presses a pattern into your forearm, and over years the raised points wear shiny while the hollows stay sharp. The arms are left plain and rounded, and the carving sits below and in front of them.

Yes, and we will tell you honestly how it will feel in use. Many people choose a light carving on the outer face of the arm only, which keeps the top surface smooth where the forearm rests.

High enough to stand up from easily, which is usually higher than a lounge chair. Tell us who will use it most - and if it is for sitting to put shoes on, we will set it slightly higher again.

Yes, for both the back and the seat, and they can differ. Send us a material, a colour or a photograph of your room, or ask us to source fabric on your behalf.

Send us photographs of your bed with any finish details, and our artisans can relate the carving style, leg profile and tone so the chair reads as part of the same room.

Yes. Champagne as shown, ivory, white, grey, gold or silver leaf, natural teak, walnut, or a custom colour you send us.

Yes. Both are built in the same run from the same stock so the carving and finish match, and each chair is crated separately for transit.

A 20-year warranty on the solid teak frame and joinery, including the arms jointed at both ends and the angled back leg joints, plus a lifetime warranty against termite damage on the teak.
