A gilded carved teak high back chair with a buttoned suede back and urn crest, made to order by Brown Rabbit.

Suede is worth a moment's thought. It has a nap like velvet but a much shorter one, so it reads as a soft matt colour rather than as a shifting surface - which is why it sits so calmly inside a bright gold frame where a shinier cloth would compete.

The frame width can be drawn heavier or lighter. Heavier makes the chair more architectural and the upholstery more of an infill; lighter gives the fabric more presence.

Any fabric can be used, and the frame can be finished in gold, silver, champagne, ivory or natural teak. Custom sizes are made to order and final measurements are confirmed in writing before production.

The frame on this chair is one continuous band from the seat rail up round the crest and down the other side, and it is not one piece of timber - it is several, jointed where nobody will look for a joint.

The decision is where those joints fall. The obvious place is at the top of each shoulder, where the frame changes direction most sharply - and that is exactly the wrong place, because a joint at a change of direction is both the weakest point and the most visible one.

So our artisans place the joints part way up each side, in the straightest section of the run, where the two pieces meet almost in line with each other. That gives a long gluing face, keeps short grain out of the corners, and puts the joint where the eye is travelling rather than where it stops.

The carving is then run continuously across each joint after assembly, not stopped either side of it, so the ornament crosses the junction and the frame reads as a single band. On a fully gilded piece, where there is no grain to give the joint away, it becomes genuinely invisible.

Frame: solid teak throughout, hand-carved by master Indian artisans and gilded.

Structure: continuous broad frame band from seat rail to crest and down, jointed in the straightest sections of the run with the carving run across the joints after assembly; urn-centred crest; rolled arms on carved scroll supports; shell apron; carved legs.

Upholstery: buttoned back in suede as photographed, or the fabric of your choosing; sprung and webbed seat.

Proportion: frame width drawn heavier or lighter to suit how much presence you want the upholstery to have.

Finish: gold as photographed; silver, champagne, ivory and natural teak available.

Sizes: custom sizes made to order - final measurements confirmed in writing before production.

Photography: images on this page are photographs of the actual product, not renders.

A broad gilded frame is the outermost surface of this chair on every side, which means it is what any contact reaches first.

The frame band is faced along its whole run with continuous foam that follows its curve, rather than being padded at points, so no single spot on the gold takes load.

The crest is capped separately, and the arm scroll supports are wrapped individually.

The suede is covered with a clean breathable wrap and given a standoff board on foam blocks, since a nap fabric marks under pressure. Everything then goes into laminated foam, bubble wrap and a fitted wooden crate. Multi-layer protective packaging is standard and dent-free arrival is guaranteed.

Free delivery anywhere in India is included in the price - no separate freight charge, no distance loading, no small-town surcharge.

Production begins once your dimensions, frame width, fabric and finish are confirmed in writing. You get a realistic production window at that point and updates as the piece moves through frame work, carving, gilding, upholstery and crating.

The shipment is tracked and our team stays reachable throughout. Dent-free arrival is guaranteed and it is ours to honour.

Tell us your doorway and stair dimensions when you order and we plan the crate around them before the chair leaves the workshop.

The solid teak frame and its joinery carry a 20-year Brown Rabbit warranty - the seat rails, the leg joints, every joint in the continuous frame band, the arm supports and the crest fixings.

A lifetime warranty against termite damage runs with the chair for as long as you own it, backed by teak's natural termite resistance and given in writing.

Buttoning can be re-tensioned and covers remade over the years without disturbing the gilded frame, and the button grid is recorded so it can be reproduced exactly.

Written warranty terms are issued with your order so the cover is agreed before production begins.
