A carved teak study room chair with lion supports, flat arms and a buttoned leather back, made to order by Brown Rabbit.

The measurement that matters here is the relationship between seat height and desk height - about twenty-eight to thirty centimetres of clearance between the two is what makes a chair usable at a desk. Send us your desk height and we will set the seat to match rather than to a standard.

The flat arms are set at a height that clears a desk apron, so the chair can be pulled in rather than having to sit back from the table.

Hide as photographed or any fabric, and the timber can be natural, darkened or ebonised. Custom sizes are made to order and final measurements are confirmed in writing before production.

A chair used at a desk is dragged - pulled in, pushed back, twenty times a day - and that is a completely different structural problem from a chair that is sat in and left.

Dragging puts a sideways force through the legs at floor level, which racks the frame: the rectangle in plan slowly becomes a parallelogram, and every joint loosens. It is why so many old desk chairs wobble while old drawing-room chairs do not.

So this chair is braced low. A stretcher runs between the back legs and each side, down near the floor where the racking force actually acts, rather than being placed high for appearance. The lion supports at the front are also carried right down to the floor and jointed into a shaped foot rail, which triangulates the front of the chair.

Both are things you barely notice on the finished piece, and both are the reason a chair like this can be pulled up to a desk daily for fifty years and still sit square on the floor.

Frame: solid teak throughout, hand-carved by master Indian artisans.

Structure: upright panel back between fluted stiles with urn finials; flat timber arms set to clear a desk apron; seated lions carved in the round as front supports, carried to the floor and jointed into a shaped foot rail; low stretchers between the back and side legs to resist racking.

Upholstery: buttoned leather back panel and seat, or the fabric of your choosing.

Sizing: seat height set from your desk height rather than to a standard.

Finish: natural polished teak as photographed; darkened or ebonised available.

Sizes: custom sizes made to order - final measurements confirmed in writing before production.

Photography: images on this page are photographs of the actual product, not renders.

The lion supports sit at floor level at the front of the chair, which is exactly where a crate is set down - so they are capped and blocked before anything else.

Each lion is wrapped and given a moulded cover, and the shaped foot rail between them is edge-protected along its length.

The urn finials at the top of the stiles are capped individually as the highest points, and the shell crest between them separately.

The leather is covered with a clean breathable wrap and the buttoned panel given a standoff board. Everything then goes into laminated foam, bubble wrap and a fitted wooden crate. Multi-layer protective packaging is standard and dent-free arrival is guaranteed.

Free delivery anywhere in India is included in the price - no separate freight charge, no distance loading, no small-town surcharge.

Production begins once your dimensions, desk height, upholstery and finish are confirmed in writing. Figure carving on the supports takes longer than plain legs and the production window reflects it.

The shipment is tracked and our team stays reachable throughout. Dent-free arrival is guaranteed and it is our responsibility to honour.

Tell us your doorway and stair dimensions when you order and we plan the crate around them before the chair leaves the workshop.

Brown Rabbit warrants the solid teak frame and its joinery for 20 years - the seat rails, the stiles, the lion supports and their foot rail, the stretchers and the crest.

A lifetime warranty against termite damage runs with the chair for as long as you own it, backed by teak's natural termite resistance and given in writing.

Because this is a chair built to be moved daily, the bracing is designed for that from the start rather than added later. Buttoned leather can be re-tensioned and recovered without disturbing the carving.

Written warranty terms are issued with your order so the cover is agreed before production begins.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this product.

From your desk. About twenty-eight to thirty centimetres of clearance between seat and desk top is what makes a chair usable for hours. Send us your desk height and we set the seat to it.

It is braced against exactly that. Low stretchers run between the back and side legs where the racking force acts, and the lion supports are carried to the floor and jointed into a foot rail, which triangulates the front.

They are flat boards set at a height that clears a typical desk apron, so the chair can be pulled in rather than sitting back from the table. Send us your desk apron height to be certain.

It is what makes long periods possible - an upright back supports you at a table, where a reclining one puts you at the wrong angle. The back panel is buttoned and sprung rather than hard.

Yes, any fabric. Leather is the traditional choice for a working chair because it takes daily use well, but the frame is unchanged either way.

Yes - natural polished teak as shown, darkened, or ebonised. We prepare a sample for approval before completing the piece.

Solid teak throughout, hand-carved by master Indian artisans, with a 20-year warranty on the frame and joinery and a lifetime warranty against termite damage.

Yes, every image is a photograph of the real piece rather than a render. Yours is made to the same carving and finish in the size and upholstery you specify.
