A black leather high back chair in solid teak, made to order by master Indian artisans and finished by hand in a walnut tone. The back is buttoned, the arms are broad and scrolled, and a studded line follows the seat front and arm edges.

Black leather is the most forgiving upholstery we offer for a chair in daily use, and against a warm frame it keeps the carving as the thing you look at. Pale buttons and the stud line are what stop a black back from reading flat.

It suits a study, an office, a club room or a corner where one substantial chair does the work of a small seating group. Ordered in a pair with a low table, it makes a self-contained conversation setting.

Handcrafted Indian luxury, built to your measurements, with a 20-year warranty on the frame and joinery, lifetime termite cover, free PAN-India delivery and guaranteed dent-free arrival.

The crest on this chair is not carved from the back frame. It is a separate cresting board, carved on its own and then pinned to the frame from behind, and that choice is made for the direction of the grain.

If the crest were cut from the top rail, its scrolls and pierced openings would run across the grain at the outer ends, where the timber is narrowest. Short grain in a thin, deeply undercut section is the classic place for a carving to snap - not in the workshop, but years later when someone lifts the chair by the top of the back.

Carved as its own board, the crest can be oriented so the long grain runs the length of the scrollwork. Every fragile projection then has fibre running along it rather than across it.

The fixing goes in from the back, through the frame into the crest, so nothing shows on the face. A carved plug over each screw head is cut from the same offcut, so even the back reads as solid timber rather than as a joint. The join is there; it is simply not where anyone looks, and the carving is stronger for it.

Frame: solid teak throughout, hand-carved by master Indian artisans.

Crest: separate carved cresting board, grain-oriented along the scrollwork and pinned from behind so no fixing shows on the face.

Back: diamond-buttoned leather with pale buttons for contrast.

Studs: a single line following the seat front and both arm edges, pitch set out from the centre of each run.

Arms: broad, upholstered, finishing in carved scroll terminals.

Seat: plain leather cushion over a sprung seat.

Apron: carved front and sides with a centred rosette.

Finish: hand-applied walnut tone as photographed; ebonised, gilt, silver and natural teak also available.

Joinery: mortise and tenon, corner-blocked at the seat rails.

Dimensions: custom sizes made to order - final measurements confirmed in writing before production.

Studs are the detail most easily damaged in transit, because a single head pressed inward shows along an otherwise even line. The full run of studs is protected with a continuous foam strip laid over it before any general wrapping goes on.

The leather is then covered in soft non-abrasive sheeting so no packing material rubs against the hide or presses a button into the surface. Black leather shows a scuff more readily than tan, which is a reason to be careful rather than a reason to choose differently.

The pierced crest is boxed at the top so no load bears on the fretwork, and the arm scrolls and feet are padded individually with shaped foam. Bubble wrap, a corrugated shell and an outer crate cut to size follow.

Unpack from the top down after cutting the strapping, and take the stud strip off last so nothing catches on it as the wrapping comes away.

Delivery is free anywhere in India and dent-free arrival is guaranteed. If the chair is not right when the crate is opened, correcting it is our cost, and we commit to that before you place the order.

The chair is made to order, so production begins once the leather, the finish and the dimensions are confirmed in writing. We share the schedule at that point and update you as carving, upholstery, studding and finishing complete.

Dispatch waits for the polish to cure fully. Tracking is shared as soon as the crate leaves us, and our team fixes the delivery slot with you directly.

Check the chair with the delivery team present when the crate is opened. If your entrance, lift or staircase is tight, send the measurements at the order stage and we build the back height and seat width to clear your route in.

The solid teak frame and its joinery carry a 20-year warranty. That includes the cresting board and its fixing, which is part of the structure rather than an applied ornament as far as we are concerned.

A lifetime warranty against termite damage runs with it, resting on teak's own oil content rather than on any applied chemical treatment. It is issued as a written undertaking with the chair.

Both documents are tied to your order and handed over on delivery, so the record is in your hands rather than in ours alone. If a covered fault appears, photographs come first and we then arrange repair or replacement of the part concerned.

Leather, buttoning, studs and the hand-applied finish are wearing surfaces and are handled separately, but we re-upholster and re-polish our own chairs at any age. Your specification is kept on file, including the stud pitch, so a re-cover matches the original detail exactly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this product.

Yes. Black is what is photographed here; tan, oxblood, chocolate and grey all work on the same frame, and you can send us your own hide. Button colour and stud finish are chosen against whichever leather you pick.

So the grain can run along the scrollwork. Cut from the top rail, the outer scrolls would be short-grained and fragile; carved as its own board and pinned from behind, every projection has fibre running along it.

Yes. Stud pitch, stud finish and whether the line runs on the arms as well as the seat front are all part of your specification, and we are happy to build the chair without studs entirely.

Custom sizes made to order - final measurements confirmed in writing before production. Send us the seat height, seat depth and overall back height you want, or the space involved, and we cut the frame to those figures.

Solid teak throughout the frame, hand-carved by master Indian artisans. Nothing is veneered, which is why the carving can be re-cut and the frame re-polished at any point in the chair's life.

20 years on the solid teak frame and joinery, including the cresting board and its fixing, plus a lifetime warranty against termite damage. Both are issued in writing with the chair and tied to your order.

Nothing - delivery is free anywhere in India. The chair travels in multi-layer protective packaging with a continuous foam strip over the studs and the crest boxed, and arrival is guaranteed dent-free.

Yes. Every image on this page is a photograph of the actual chair we made, not a computer rendering, so the leather, the buttoning and the studding are shown exactly as they left the workshop.
