A gilded carved teak high back chair in white with a loose seat cushion, made to order by Brown Rabbit.

White upholstery is more practical than it looks on a chair with a loose cushion, because the part that gets the most use is the part that can be taken off, cleaned and replaced independently of everything else.

The low arms make this an easy chair to get in and out of, which matters more than it sounds on a piece that will be used daily rather than occasionally.

The cushion can be made firmer or softer, with a feather-wrapped or all-foam filling. Any fabric can be used and the frame is available in gold, silver, champagne or ivory. Custom sizes are made to order and final measurements are confirmed in writing before production.

A loose cushion has to fit its seat exactly, and 'exactly' does not mean 'the same size'.

A cushion cut to the precise dimensions of the seat opening will look loose the moment it is filled, because filling makes a cushion barrel outward at the sides and lose length. So the cover is cut oversized by a calculated amount - more for a soft filling that will compress, less for a firm one that will not - so that once filled it sits into the opening under slight tension, touching the frame all the way round.

Our upholsterers work out that allowance from the filling before the cover is cut, not after, and they make the cushion before the chair is finished so it can be tried in the seat and adjusted.

The result is a cushion that stays where it is put rather than sliding forward every time someone gets up - which is the single most common complaint about loose-cushion chairs, and it is always a cutting problem rather than a cushion problem.

Frame: solid teak throughout, hand-carved by master Indian artisans and gilded.

Structure: tapering buttoned back with carved crest; low rolled arms; pierced carved apron; cabriole legs.

Seat: loose cushion over a sprung and webbed platform, with the cover cut oversized by an allowance calculated from the filling so it seats under slight tension and does not slide forward.

Filling: feather-wrapped or all-foam, firmer or softer to your preference.

Finish: gold as photographed; silver, champagne and ivory available.

Sizes: custom sizes made to order - final measurements confirmed in writing before production.

Photography: images on this page are photographs of the actual product, not renders.

White upholstery is packed for cleanliness first, since a transferred mark is far more likely than a dent.

Every upholstered surface is covered with a clean breathable wrap that will not transfer colour, applied before any foam or tape comes near the chair.

The loose cushion travels wrapped separately and supported flat, so it arrives with its shape rather than compressed into the seat.

The buttoned back is given a standoff board on foam blocks, the pierced apron is packed from behind, and the legs are wrapped and blocked. Everything then goes into laminated foam, bubble wrap and a fitted wooden crate. Multi-layer protective packaging is standard and dent-free arrival is guaranteed.

Delivery anywhere in India is free and included in the price - no separate freight charge, no distance loading, no small-town surcharge.

Production begins once your dimensions, fabric, cushion filling and finish are confirmed in writing. The cushion is made before the chair is finished so it can be tried in the seat and adjusted, which is built into the production window we give you.

The shipment is tracked and our team stays reachable throughout. Dent-free arrival is guaranteed and it is ours to honour.

Tell us your doorway and stair dimensions when you order and we plan the crate around them before the chair leaves the workshop.

Brown Rabbit warrants the solid teak frame and its joinery for 20 years - the seat rails, the cabriole leg joints, the back frame, the arm structure and the crest and apron fixings.

A lifetime warranty against termite damage runs with the chair for as long as you own it, resting on teak's natural termite resistance and confirmed in writing.

The loose cushion can be refilled or recovered on its own without touching the chair - which is the practical argument for a loose cushion over a fixed seat, and it is why the part that wears fastest is also the part that is easiest to renew.

Written warranty terms are issued with your order so the cover is agreed before production begins.
