A gilded carved teak high back armchair with a buttoned tapering back and low rolled arms, made to order by Brown Rabbit.

Arm height is the measurement that decides how this chair feels, and it is worth setting to a person rather than to a standard. Set at forearm height it supports; set lower it frees the shoulders and the chair feels more open. Tell us who will use it and how, and we will draw it accordingly.

The tapering back is drawn narrower at the top than the bottom, which makes the chair look taller than it measures - useful in a room with height, and worth knowing if you are comparing dimensions on paper.

Any fabric can be used, and the frame is available in gold, silver, champagne, ivory or natural teak. Custom sizes are made to order and final measurements are confirmed in writing before production.

The back of this chair narrows as it rises, and the taper is not constant.

A back that narrows at a steady rate from seat to crest reads as a wedge - correct, but stiff. So the taper here is drawn as a very shallow curve instead: almost parallel for the lower third where the sitter's back actually is, then drawing in more definitely through the upper two thirds where nobody touches it.

That gives two things at once. The part of the chair that has to support a person stays full width and comfortable, and the part that is purely visual does the work of making the chair look tall and elegant.

The buttoning grid is then set out to the taper rather than to a rectangle, so the diamonds narrow as they rise with the frame. Set out square inside a tapering back, the buttons would visibly diverge from the frame edges as they climbed - which is one of those faults that makes a chair look wrong to everybody and explicable to almost nobody.

Frame: solid teak throughout, hand-carved by master Indian artisans and gilded.

Structure: tall back tapering on a shallow curve - near parallel through the lower third, drawing in above - with a carved shell crest; low rolled arms on carved supports; fruit-and-flower apron; carved legs.

Upholstery: buttoned back with the grid set out to the taper so the diamonds narrow with the frame; sprung and webbed seat; fabric of your choosing.

Comfort: arm height set to the person who will use the chair rather than to a standard.

Finish: gold as photographed; silver, champagne, ivory and natural teak available.

Sizes: custom sizes made to order - final measurements confirmed in writing before production.

Photography: images on this page are photographs of the actual product, not renders.

A tall back and low arms mean the chair's widest and highest points are in different places, so it is packed to both.

The crest is capped separately as the highest point, and the arm rolls are wrapped along their curve as the widest.

The buttoned back is covered with a clean breathable wrap and given a standoff board on foam blocks so nothing presses into the buttons.

The gilded apron carving is capped, and the legs are wrapped and blocked so the chair's weight rests on its seat rails. Everything then goes into laminated foam, bubble wrap and a fitted wooden crate. Multi-layer protective packaging is standard and dent-free arrival is guaranteed.

Free delivery anywhere in India is included in the price - no separate freight charge, no distance loading, no small-town surcharge.

Production begins once your dimensions, arm height, fabric and finish are confirmed in writing. You get a realistic production window at that point and updates as the piece moves through frame work, carving, gilding, upholstery and crating.

The shipment is tracked and our team stays reachable throughout. Dent-free arrival is guaranteed and it is ours to honour.

Tell us your doorway and stair dimensions when you order and we plan the crate around them before the chair leaves the workshop.

Brown Rabbit warrants the solid teak frame and its joinery for 20 years - the seat rails, the leg joints, the tall back frame, the arm supports and the crest and apron fixings.

A lifetime warranty against termite damage runs with the chair for as long as you own it, resting on teak's natural termite resistance and confirmed in writing.

Buttoning can be re-tensioned and covers remade over the years without disturbing the gilded frame, and the tapered button grid is recorded so it can be reproduced exactly rather than re-guessed.

Written warranty terms are issued with your order so the cover is agreed before production begins.
