A maroon high back chair in solid teak, made to order by master Indian artisans and finished by hand in a pale antiqued gold. The shaped damask back sits inside a ruched border; a matching pair of bolsters rests at the arms.

Deep maroon against a pale frame is a pairing that holds up in a large room, where a darker frame would make the whole chair recede. It works at the end of a drawing room, in a hall, or as a single seat on a landing where a tall back has space above it.

The bolsters are part of the design rather than accessories - they close the gap between the arms and the shaped back, so the seat feels enclosed. They can be made in the damask, in plain velvet, or in a contrast, whichever you prefer.

Handcrafted Indian luxury, built to your measurements, with a 20-year warranty on the frame and joinery, lifetime termite cover, free PAN-India delivery and guaranteed dent-free arrival.

A pair of bolsters is not two identical cushions. Make them identical and one of them ends up with its closing seam facing into the room.

Every bolster has a seam where the cover is closed, and on a shaped cushion that seam is placed at what will be the back or the outer face. If both are made to the same hand, the seam sits correctly on one side of the chair and stares out at you from the other. It is a small thing on a workshop bench and a distinctly annoying thing in a finished room.

So ours are cut as a left and a right. The pattern is turned over for the second cushion, the seam allowance falls on the opposite face, and both bolsters are then set with their closings facing the arms. From the front, the chair shows two uninterrupted damask faces.

On a patterned cloth the mirroring does one more thing: it turns the motif on the second bolster so it leans toward the centre of the chair rather than away from it. Nobody articulates why the pair looks settled. They just do not notice anything pulling their eye sideways.

Frame: solid teak throughout, hand-carved by master Indian artisans.

Back: shaped and waisted panel in damask, set inside a ruched border following the full outline.

Crest: carved shell centre with pierced scrollwork continuing down both sides of the back.

Cushions: a pair of bolsters cut as left and right hands so both closing seams face the arms, plus a plain seat cushion.

Arms: low carved arm rails with turned and carved supports.

Apron: carved and pierced across the front with a centred shell.

Legs: carved front legs finishing in scrolled feet.

Joinery: mortise and tenon, corner-blocked at the seat rails.

Finish: pale antiqued gold laid by hand; silver, ebonised, walnut and natural teak also available.

Dimensions: custom sizes made to order - final measurements confirmed in writing before production.

The pierced scrollwork running down both sides of the back is the most delicate carving on this chair, and it is packed first. Shaped foam is set into the openings rather than laid across them, so strapping tension is carried on solid timber and never on a fret.

The damask and the ruched border are covered in soft non-abrasive sheeting laid on loosely, so the gathering is not compressed flat under the layers above. The bolsters and the seat cushion travel wrapped separately inside the crate rather than in position on the chair.

The crest shell, the arm supports and the scrolled feet are each padded individually. Bubble wrap, a corrugated shell and an outer crate cut to the chair follow, with corner protection at every load-bearing point.

Unpack from the top down after cutting the strapping, and set the cushions in place last. The ruching lifts back naturally once it is free of the wrapping.

Delivery is free anywhere in India and the chair is guaranteed to arrive dent-free. If it is not right when the crate is opened, correcting it is our cost, and we commit to that before you order.

Production begins once the fabric, the finish, the cushion arrangement and the measurements are confirmed in writing. We share the schedule at that point and update you as carving, finishing and upholstery complete.

Dispatch follows full curing of the hand-laid finish. Tracking is shared as soon as the crate leaves us, and our team agrees the delivery window with you directly.

Check the chair with the delivery team present when the crate is opened. A tall back needs door and stair clearance, so send us your access measurements at the order stage and we build a back height that clears the route in.

The solid teak frame and its joinery are warranted for 20 years. That covers the structural timber and the joints, including the pierced side sections of the back, which are carved from the solid and are part of the frame rather than applied decoration.

A lifetime warranty against termite damage runs alongside it, resting on teak's own oil content rather than on any applied treatment, and it is issued as a written undertaking with the chair.

Both documents are tied to your order and handed over on delivery, so the record stays with you. If a covered fault appears, send photographs first and we then arrange repair or replacement of the affected part.

Damask, ruching, cushions and the hand-laid finish are wearing surfaces and sit outside the structural cover, but we re-cover and re-finish our own chairs at any age. Your specification stays on file, including the bolster handing, so a later re-cover reproduces the original exactly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this product.

Yes. Maroon against the pale frame is what is photographed here; ivory, pale gold, deep green or navy on the same carving give completely different results. Send us your own fabric or choose from our range.

Yes, the pair is part of the chair as shown, along with the seat cushion. They can be made in the damask, in plain velvet or in a contrast, and the number of cushions is yours to set.

They are cut as a left and a right so both closing seams face the arms rather than one of them facing into the room. On a patterned cloth it also turns the motif on the second bolster toward the centre of the chair.

Custom sizes made to order - final measurements confirmed in writing before production. Give us seat height, seat depth and overall back height, or the space it has to occupy, and we cut the frame to those figures.

Yes, solid teak throughout, hand-carved by master Indian artisans, including the pierced scrollwork down the sides of the back. Nothing is veneered, so the frame can be re-gilded or the carving re-cut at any point.

Yes. The pale antiqued gold shown is one of several hand-laid finishes - silver, ebonised black, walnut and clear natural teak all work on the same carving and change the chair's character entirely.

20 years on the solid teak frame and joinery, plus a lifetime warranty against termite damage. Both are issued in writing with the chair and tied to your order number.

Delivery is free anywhere in India. The pierced carving is packed with shaped foam set into its openings, the cushions travel separately, and the chair is crated in multi-layer protective packaging with dent-free arrival guaranteed.
