Overview of this rose carved luxury bed

This luxury bed is built in solid teak with a pierced carved crest of roses and acanthus above a white tufted headboard panel, deep carved side scrolls, and a serpentine footboard carrying a carved rose cluster. The finish is gold over the carving, with the upholstery left white so the carved outline reads clearly against it.

Pierced carving is what gives this headboard its silhouette. Because the crest is cut through, the wall colour shows between the scrolls and the bed's outline is drawn against the room rather than against a solid board. It is the reason this design looks different at night, when lamplight passes through the piercing instead of stopping at it.

The carving on a piece like this takes a skilled artisan weeks, not days, and that is the honest reason for both the price and the production time. Matching bedside chests can be built alongside, and custom sizes are made to order in king size, queen size, double or a dimension you specify.

The story of the carver's hand

A furniture carver works with a set of gouges, each ground to a particular curve, and the craft is largely about knowing which one matches the line in front of you. A rose is not carved petal by petal from the outside in; it is roughed as a mass, then the outer petals are released, then the inner ones, and the carver works down into the flower without ever being able to put material back. There is no undo.

India's carving tradition runs continuously from temple and haveli work into furniture, and the same families that cut architectural brackets and door surrounds moved into carved seating and beds as households changed. The vocabulary shifted from stone and dense local hardwoods to teak, but the tool grip and the sequence of cuts did not.

Machine routing can now produce a passable relief pattern in minutes, and moulded resin can imitate one for a fraction of the cost. Neither can do what a hand carver does with an undercut, where the chisel goes in behind the form so the element stands free of its background. That undercut is the shadow line your eye reads as depth, and it is the single most reliable thing to look for.

Dimensions and weight are not published because each bed is built to the buyer's mattress and room. Send your mattress measurements and available wall width and we will confirm the finished footprint and crest height in writing before carving begins.

Packaging

Pierced carving is the most fragile thing we ship. Openwork has thin sections with nothing behind them, so any pressure across an unsupported span will break an element that took days to cut. The crest is packed with foam supporting the piercing from both faces, so no load can cross an open section.

Roses carved in the round project further than the rest of the surface and take the first contact in any knock. Each cluster is individually padded before the general foam wrap goes on. The white tufted panels are covered in an undyed breathable cloth with foam over the buttons, and no adhesive tape touches any finished or upholstered surface.

The bed travels in a wooden crate built to this piece with internal bracing, and the crest is oriented so the carving faces inward rather than towards a crate wall. Hardware is bagged, labelled and secured inside. Ask us for crate dimensions before dispatch if your lift or staircase is restricted.

Shipping

We deliver across India and accept international orders. This bed is made to order, and because the carving is the long pole in production, we quote a realistic carving schedule rather than an optimistic one and confirm it in writing at the time of order.

Indian deliveries move by covered transport with the crate braced against movement, delivered to your address. The pierced crest makes the headboard both the tallest and the most delicate component, so please confirm your lift height and staircase turns before production. Where access is tight, the crest can be built to detach at a joint concealed within the carving.

Home assembly is arranged in most Indian cities. We would strongly recommend our team rather than a general handyman on a pierced carved bed, since a broken openwork section is a re-carve, not a repair. International orders are quoted per destination with export-grade crating; duties and taxes at destination are the buyer's responsibility.

Warranty

Brown Rabbit warrants the solid teak frame, the joinery and the hand carving against manufacturing defects. If a carved or pierced element fails because of a fault in timber selection or in the making, we repair or re-carve it. Carving is the value in this bed, and it is where our warranty is most meaningful.

Breakage of pierced elements caused by impact, by lifting the bed by its crest, or by transport arranged independently by the buyer is not covered, because openwork carving cannot be made impact-proof without making it look like something else. Always lift this headboard by its frame.

Upholstery workmanship is warranted against defects; fabric wear, staining and sun fading are not. The gold finish is warranted against flaking or lifting caused by defective application, with natural mellowing expected. Damage from moisture, chemical cleaners or third-party repairs falls outside the warranty. Full terms are issued in writing with your order.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this product.

Look for undercutting, where the carver has cut in behind an element so it stands free of its background and casts a shadow. Also look for small variations between repeated motifs. Machine-routed carving is uniformly shallow and identical; moulded resin appliques have a soft edge and sit on top of a flat surface rather than emerging from it.

Pierced or openwork carving is cut right through the timber, so the wall colour shows between the scrolls and the bed's silhouette is drawn against the room. It is more difficult and more fragile than relief carving, because the thin sections have no material behind them supporting them.

Because carving cannot be rushed or reversed. A crest of this complexity takes a skilled artisan weeks, working down into the form with no way to replace material once it is cut. Any workshop quoting a hand carved bed of this kind in a few days is not hand carving it.

No. Resin appliques are moulded and glued onto a flat frame, which is why they have soft edges, identical repeats and no undercut. They also separate from the wood over time as the two materials expand differently. Everything carved on this Brown Rabbit bed is cut from the solid teak of the frame itself.

Yes. Roses and acanthus are what this design uses, but our artisans carve to drawing, so floral, geometric, foliate or a family motif can be substituted. Send us a reference image and we will tell you honestly whether it suits the proportions of the frame before you commit to it.

King size, queen size, double or any custom dimension, and the carving can be finished in gold, silver, antique white, ivory or a natural teak polish. The upholstery colour and material are separately customisable. We build the frame to your mattress, so send its exact measurements before production.
