Overview of this antique white carved bed

This luxury bed is built in solid teak, hand carved in a French style and finished in antique white. The headboard is a shaped tufted panel beneath a pierced openwork crest with scrolled side wings; the footboard is a low serpentine rail carrying a carved shell; the whole frame stands on carved cabriole legs. Two matching single-drawer bedside tables complete the arrangement.

The proportions are lighter than most carved beds. The footboard is low, the legs are slender, and the side tables are small rather than chest-sized, which together make this the right set for a bedroom of moderate size where a heavier design would fill the room.

The tufted headboard is fabric here rather than leatherette, giving a softer, warmer surface for leaning against. Beige keeps the whole set in one tonal family with the antique white frame, though the panel can be built in any colour you choose. Custom sizes are made to order in king size, queen size, double or a dimension you specify.

The story of furniture that outlives its owners

The reason antique furniture exists is not that old furniture was magically better. It is survivor bias with a mechanism behind it: pieces built from solid timber with mechanical joints could be repaired, so people repaired them, and the ones that were repaired are the ones still standing. Pieces built from boards and glue could not be repaired economically, so they were discarded.

Traditional workshops built with this assumption in the design itself. Joints were cut so they could be knocked apart and re-wedged. Finishes were chosen because they could be revived rather than needing to be stripped. Upholstery was fixed with tacks precisely so a later generation could pull them out and start again.

Our artisans still build to that logic. Mortise and tenon joinery, bolted rail fixings that can be retightened, a hand-applied finish that can be blended and repaired in place, and upholstered panels that lift out for re-covering without touching the carved frame. None of this shows in a photograph. All of it decides whether a bed bought today is a family piece in 2060 or a disposal problem in 2035.

Packaging

The pierced crest is the most delicate element in this set, so it is packed with foam supporting the openwork from both faces, ensuring no load crosses an unsupported span. The slender cabriole legs on the bed and both side tables are padded individually along their length, with extra foam at the narrow ankle of each curve.

Only clean undyed packing materials touch the antique white finish, since printed or dyed wrap can transfer onto a pale surface. No adhesive tape is applied to any finished or upholstered face. The tufted panel is covered in a breathable cloth with foam over the buttons so the tufting is never compressed.

The bed and both side tables travel in crates built for these pieces, internally braced, with drawers secured shut. Hardware is bagged, labelled by component and fixed inside the main crate along with the assembly sequence. Crate dimensions can be confirmed to you before dispatch on request.

Shipping

We deliver this set across India and accept international orders. It is made to order, so dispatch follows the production window confirmed to you in writing when the order is placed.

Indian deliveries move by covered transport with crates braced against movement, delivered to your address. The carved headboard with its crest is the tallest component and is what a small lift usually cannot take, so confirm your lift height and staircase turns before production. Where access is restricted, the crest can be built to detach at a joint concealed within the carving.

Home assembly is arranged in most Indian cities. Because this bed uses bolted rail fixings, it is designed to be dismantled and reassembled cleanly if you move house, and our team will show you which fixings to retighten and when. International orders are quoted per destination with export-grade crating; duties and taxes at destination are the buyer's responsibility.

Warranty

Brown Rabbit warrants the solid teak frame, the carved elements, the joinery and the bolted fixings against manufacturing defects. If a joint loosens through a fault in the making, a leg fails or a carved element cracks, we repair or replace it. Because this bed is built to be dismantled, most structural repairs can be done in your home rather than by returning the piece.

Upholstery workmanship is warranted against defects. Fabric wear, staining, marks from hair oil or cosmetics, and fading in direct sunlight are not covered; on a pale fabric, sunlight fading is the most common avoidable damage we see, so keep the bed out of a direct sun path.

The antique white finish is warranted against flaking or lifting caused by defective application, and can be blended and repaired in place if scratched. Gradual mellowing of the tone with age is expected. Damage from moisture, chemical cleaners, breakage of pierced carving through impact, independently arranged transport or third-party repairs is outside the warranty. Full terms are issued in writing with your order.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this product.

Three things: retighten the rail bolts once a year, keep the finish dry and out of direct sunlight, and never drag the bed across the floor while assembled. Most beds that fail early fail at the rail joints, and a joint that is retightened before it starts moving never wears in the first place.

Yes, if it is solid timber with mechanical joints. Solid teak can be re-cut, re-glued, plugged and re-carved by any competent workshop, and a hand-applied finish can be blended in place. Veneered board furniture cannot be repaired this way, which is why so little of it survives beyond a decade.

Antique white is a softened, slightly warmed white where the tone is allowed to settle deeper in the carved recesses, so the detail reads without any contrasting colour. It hides marks better than a bright white and mellows more gracefully with age, which makes it the easier pale finish to live with.

Yes. The side rails bolt to the headboard and footboard rather than being glued, so the bed comes apart into headboard, footboard, rails and slats and goes back together without damage. Keep the original hardware, and reassemble on a level floor before tightening the bolts fully.

Yes. The tufted panel is built as a removable insert, so it can be re-covered in a new fabric decades later while the carved teak frame stays untouched. This is the main practical reason to buy an upholstered bed on a solid wood frame rather than an all-in-one padded one.

Yes, more so than most carved beds. The footboard is low, the legs are slender and the side tables are small rather than chest-sized, so the set takes less visual and physical space than a heavy carved design. Send us your room dimensions and we will tell you whether king or queen fits properly.
