Overview of this upholstered carved luxury bed

This luxury bed pairs hand-carved solid teak with a fully upholstered, diamond-tufted headboard and footboard. The carving runs as a continuous frame around the soft panels: acanthus scrollwork, a crested centre motif above the headboard and a shaped apron across the foot, all finished in an antique gold patina that sits over the wood rather than hiding it.

Upholstered beds and carved beds are usually sold as separate categories. Buyers who want a padded back to lean against often end up with a plain modern frame, and buyers who want carving often end up with a hard wooden headboard. This piece is built to serve both requirements at once, which is why it suits a master bedroom where the bed is the only large statement piece in the room.

The white tufted panels are removable at the panel level, so the upholstery can be redone years later without disturbing the carved teak structure. That single detail is what makes an upholstered bed a long-term purchase rather than a five-year one. Custom sizes are made to order in king, queen, double or a dimension you specify.

The story behind the tufted panel

Button tufting began as a practical solution long before it was decorative. Before modern foam existed, upholstery was stuffed with horsehair and cotton that migrated to the bottom of the panel within months. Craftsmen solved it by stitching through the stuffing at regular intervals and capping each stitch with a button, which locked the filling in place permanently. The diamond pattern that resulted was a by-product of the grid, not the goal.

Indian workshops absorbed the technique through the durbar halls and princely bedrooms of the nineteenth century, where imported upholstery met local carving traditions. What emerged was a hybrid our artisans still build today: a carved teak frame doing the structural and decorative work, with a tufted panel inset where the body actually touches the furniture.

On this bed each button is set by hand while the panel is stretched, and the tension is checked across the grid so no single diamond pulls deeper than its neighbours. It is slow, and it is why a hand-tufted panel reads as crisp while a machine-pressed one looks soft and vague. Handcrafted Indian luxury of this kind is measured in hours of labour, not in features.

We do not publish fixed dimensions or weight for this bed because every unit is built to the buyer's mattress and room measurements. Share your mattress size and wall width and we will confirm the exact overall footprint before production begins.

Packaging

Upholstered surfaces need different protection from bare wood, so this bed is packed in two stages. The white tufted panels are first covered in a breathable non-woven cloth that will not trap moisture against the fabric, then a layer of soft foam is laid over the buttons so nothing presses into the tufting during transit. Pressure marks on tufted upholstery can take weeks to relax, so this step matters more than it sounds.

The carved teak sections are wrapped separately in foam sheeting with additional padding at every projecting carved element, particularly the headboard crest and the footboard scrolls. Corners are boxed. The side rails and slats are bundled and braced.

Everything then goes into a bespoke wooden crate built around the individual bed rather than a stock size. Hardware travels in a labelled pouch fixed inside the crate, and the crate carries orientation and handling marks. Custom crate dimensions are confirmed with you before dispatch if your building has access restrictions.

Shipping

We ship this bed across India and accept international orders. Because it is made to order, dispatch follows production rather than stock availability, and we confirm a production window in writing when the order is placed.

Domestic deliveries are made by covered transport with the crate secured against movement. Delivery is to your address, and we ask you to confirm in advance whether the lift or staircase can take a crated headboard, since a carved and upholstered headboard is the single largest component and cannot be reduced in size. If access is tight we can plan the build so the headboard splits at a joint that is hidden once assembled.

Assembly at your home is arranged in most Indian cities. The bed arrives as headboard, footboard, rails and slats, and is bolted together on site. International shipments are quoted per destination and include export-grade crating and documentation. Duties and taxes at destination are the buyer's responsibility.

Warranty

Brown Rabbit provides a structural warranty on the solid teak frame and joinery of this bed covering manufacturing defects in the wood, the carving and the joints. If a joint loosens or a carved element fails through a fault in the making, we repair or replace it.

Upholstery is covered separately for workmanship: button seating, panel tension and stitching are warranted against defects in the tufting work. Fabric wear, staining, marks from body oils or hair products and fading from direct sunlight are not covered, as these depend on use and placement rather than on manufacture.

Finish is a hand-applied antique gold patina. It is warranted against flaking or lifting caused by a defect in application. Natural mellowing of the patina with age and light is expected and is not a defect. Damage from transport by third parties arranged by the buyer, from moisture exposure, or from attempted repairs by others falls outside the warranty. Exact warranty terms are confirmed in writing with your order.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this product.

A diamond tufted bed has a padded headboard or footboard stitched at regular intervals and capped with buttons, forming a diamond grid of folds. The stitching holds the filling permanently in place, which is why hand-tufted panels stay crisp rather than flattening. On this Brown Rabbit bed the tufting sits inside a hand-carved solid teak frame.

Yes. On this bed the tufted panels are built as removable inserts, so the fabric can be replaced years later without touching the carved teak structure. That is the main practical advantage of buying an upholstered bed on a solid wood frame instead of an all-in-one padded frame.

It is practical if the fabric is chosen for the household. White reads clean and makes carved gold detail stand out, but it shows hair oil and marks at head height. We can supply the same tufting in a treated fabric, in leatherette or in a darker shade while keeping the identical carved teak frame and antique gold finish.

An upholstered bed gives you a soft back to lean against and a quieter, warmer surface. A carved wooden bed gives you depth, shadow and hand craftsmanship. This piece is built to give both: carved solid teak forms the outer frame and the crest, and the tufted panels fill the areas the body actually touches.

Yes. It is made to order in king size, queen size, double or any dimension you specify. Send us your mattress measurements and the wall width available and we will build the bed to fit, including bespoke sizes that no standard mattress will match, in which case we will tell you before you commit.

Yes. Hydraulic lift storage, box storage or drawers can be built into the base while keeping the carved teak frame and tufted panels exactly as shown. Tell us your mattress weight and we will specify the correct lift struts, because storage that is under-specified is the most common failure point on a heavy bed.
