Overview of this gold and velvet luxury bed

This luxury bed is a full baroque statement: a tall shaped headboard rising to a carved shell crest, deep scrolled side wings, a serpentine footboard and carved cabriole legs, all in solid teak with an antique gold finish. Beige velvet tufted panels fill the headboard and footboard.

The headboard height is the defining feature. A tall headboard makes a bed the visual centre of the room and is the right choice where ceilings are high and the wall behind the bed is otherwise plain. It also gives a genuinely comfortable backrest for sitting up, which shorter headboards do not. In a room with a low false ceiling or a headboard wall broken by a window, we would recommend reducing the crest height, and we can do that without changing the rest of the design.

The tone here is warm throughout: gold carving, beige velvet, gold-finished side chests. That warmth suits cream or ivory walls, wooden or beige stone flooring and brass fittings. Custom sizes are made to order in king size, queen size, double or any dimension you specify.

The story of velvet on royal beds

Velvet was for centuries a status fabric before it was a comfortable one. Weaving it requires two layers of cloth to be woven face to face and then cut apart on the loom, doubling the thread consumption and demanding a weaver skilled enough to keep the cut even. That cost is why velvet appeared on thrones, canopies and state beds long before it reached ordinary furniture.

India's connection to it runs deep. Mughal workshops produced silk velvets with metal-thread grounds for court use, and velvet hangings framed the beds and canopies of princely households well into the twentieth century. When European carved forms entered Indian palaces, velvet was already the expected upholstery, and the pairing of gilded carving with a velvet panel became a settled convention.

Our artisans still upholster these panels by hand, stretching the velvet with the pile running in one consistent direction across the whole panel. Get that direction wrong between two adjacent panels and the same fabric will read as two different colours. It is a detail nobody notices when it is right and everybody notices when it is wrong, and it is a fair test of whether a bed was upholstered by a craftsman or assembled in a hurry.

We do not publish fixed dimensions or weight, because every bed is built around the buyer's mattress and room. Send your mattress size and ceiling height and we will confirm the finished footprint and headboard height in writing before production.

Packaging

Velvet is packed differently from every other upholstery material because pile crushes under sustained pressure and does not always recover. The velvet panels are covered in a breathable non-woven cloth, then a thick soft foam layer is laid so that nothing bears directly on the pile or on the button heads for the duration of transit.

The gold-finished carving is wrapped separately, with additional foam built up at the shell crest, the headboard wings, the footboard scrolls and the cabriole knees. No adhesive tape touches a finished or upholstered surface at any point.

The bed then goes into a wooden crate built to the individual piece with internal bracing. Hardware travels bagged and labelled inside the crate, which is marked for orientation and handling. Because this headboard is tall, crate height is often the limiting factor for lift access, so we will confirm exact crate dimensions with you before dispatch if you ask.

Shipping

We ship across India and accept international orders for this bed. It is made to order, so dispatch follows the production window confirmed to you in writing at the time of order.

Deliveries within India travel by covered transport with the crate braced against movement, delivered to your address. The tall headboard is the single largest component and the one most likely to be limited by lift height or a staircase turn. Please measure your access before production; where it is tight, the headboard can be engineered to separate at a concealed joint that disappears once assembled.

Home assembly is arranged in most Indian cities. The bed assembles as headboard, footboard, side rails and slats. International shipments are quoted per destination with export-grade crating and full documentation. Destination duties, taxes and customs clearance are the buyer's responsibility.

Warranty

Brown Rabbit warrants the solid teak frame, the joinery and the hand carving against manufacturing defects. If a joint loosens, a rail fails or a carved element cracks because of a fault in the making, we repair or replace it.

Upholstery workmanship, including button seating, pile direction and panel tension, is warranted against defects. Velvet pile flattening in areas of regular contact is normal behaviour for the fabric and is not a defect. Staining, marks from hair oil or cosmetics, pet damage and fading from direct sunlight are not covered, as they depend on use and placement.

The antique gold finish is warranted against flaking or lifting caused by defective application. Mellowing of the gold with age and light is expected. Damage from moisture, from cleaning with water or chemical agents, from independently arranged transport, or from repairs attempted by others is outside the warranty. Full terms are issued in writing with your order.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this product.

Velvet works well in air-conditioned bedrooms and in dry and moderate climates. In very humid coastal conditions it needs regular vacuuming and good room ventilation, because a dense pile holds dust and moisture. If your bedroom is humid and unconditioned, we can supply the identical carved teak bed in a treated performance fabric or leatherette instead.

Vacuum it regularly with a soft brush attachment, working in the direction of the pile. Blot spills immediately with a dry cloth and never rub, as rubbing permanently distorts pile. Do not use water or household cleaners on velvet. For anything beyond a light mark, use a professional upholstery cleaner who has handled velvet before.

The pile flattens where the body regularly rests, which is normal and not a fault. Light brushing along the pile direction lifts most of it back. Higher-density velvets and short-pile velvets show less marking, and we can specify a denser grade if the bed will be leaned against nightly. Tell us how you use the headboard and we will recommend the grade.

Height should follow ceiling height and wall shape rather than a fixed number. A tall crested headboard needs a full plain wall and a reasonably high ceiling to breathe. If a window, an air-conditioner or a low false ceiling breaks the wall behind the bed, a lower crest looks better. We build this design to whatever height your wall allows.

Yes. It is made to order in king size, queen size, double or a custom dimension, and hydraulic lift storage or drawers can be built into the base while the carving and velvet panels stay exactly as shown. Share your mattress weight so we can specify lift struts correctly, because under-specified struts are the usual cause of storage failure.

Beige, champagne, deep bottle green, wine and midnight blue all hold their own against gold carving. Pure white velvet on a bed is difficult to maintain at head height, and very pale greys can read as dirty next to warm gold. We can send velvet samples to see against your wall colour before the order is finalised.
