A royal diwan in solid teak with a black and gold carved frame and a fan fluted velvet back.

The back rises high at the head into a carved and gilded crest, then falls away in a long scrolled line to a low back at the foot - the classic diwan profile, made for lying along as much as sitting on.

The fan fluting is what carries the piece. Instead of a buttoned diamond grid, the back is divided into radiating channels that open as they rise, so the velvet reads as a series of soft vertical lights and shadows that shift as you move past it.

The seat runs the full length as a single fluted cushion, and a bolster sits at each end with a gilded rosette on its face.

Gilding is kept to the carved edges of the black frame - the crest, the back rail, the arm scrolls, the apron and the legs.

Custom sizes made to order - final measurements confirmed in writing before production.

Fan fluting looks like a row of parallel channels. It is not - every channel is a different length, and each one tapers, and that is what makes it difficult.

The flutes radiate from a point low in the back and spread as they rise, so each channel is narrow at its foot and wide at its head. If the wadding inside them were cut as uniform strips, the narrow ends would be over-filled and stand proud while the wide ends would be under-filled and read flat. The fan would appear to swell in the middle and die at the edges.

So the filling for every channel is cut individually, tapered along its length to match the channel it goes into - thinner where the flute is narrow, fuller where it opens - so that the height of the relief stays constant from the bottom of the fan to the top.

The velvet is then worked into each channel one at a time, always in the same direction, so the pile lies the same way across the whole back. Velvet worked in alternating directions would read as alternating light and dark stripes, and no amount of good fluting would rescue it.

Frame: solid teak throughout, hand-carved, with a black lacquered finish and hand-applied gold on the carved edges.

Back: fan fluted, with individually tapered channel fillings so the relief stays even, rising to a carved and gilded crest at the head.

Seat: single full-length fluted cushion on a sprung and webbed platform.

Arms: carved scrolled arms at both ends, gilded on the scroll.

Bolsters: one at each end, faced with a gilded carved rosette.

Apron and legs: carved and gilded apron with a central motif, on hand-shaped carved legs.

Handing: built with the high back to the left or the right, to your requirement.

Made to order: length, back height, seat depth, handing, finish and covering are all customisable. Custom sizes made to order - final measurements confirmed in writing before production.

Three different surfaces need three different treatments on this piece.

The gloss black frame shows every mark, so acid-free tissue is laid directly against it before anything else, then foam padding shaped along the mouldings, then bubble wrap.

The gilded carving - crest, arm scrolls, apron and rosettes - is protected the same way, with additional foam blocking around each projecting carved element.

Velvet is packed to protect the pile rather than the surface: a breathable cloth wrap first, laid with the pile rather than against it, then soft polythene, with no tape and no pressure anywhere on the fluted back.

Bolsters travel separately in their own sleeves so nothing is crushed against the fluting.

Legs are detached where the design allows, sleeved in foam and boxed. Everything ships in a hardwood crate, corner-protected and marked for orientation. Multi-layer protective packaging is included on every order at no extra cost.

Delivery is free anywhere in India, with guaranteed dent-free arrival. No distance charge, no size charge and no handling fee.

Production starts once your length, handing and covering are confirmed in writing. We photograph your actual diwan through the build - the frame in the white, the carving, the black finish, the gilding, the fan fluting as it is worked, and the finished piece.

Our team carries the diwan in, fits the legs if they have travelled separately, sets and levels it, and places the bolsters last.

Send us lift dimensions, stair turns and doorway widths ahead of dispatch so the route can be planned before the piece leaves us. Every photograph on this page is of the actual product, not a render.

The solid teak frame and joinery carry a 20-year warranty - the seat rails, the back frame, the arm frames, the apron and the leg joints, along with everything holding them together.

A lifetime warranty against termite damage runs with the diwan and never expires. Teak's own oils are its first protection, and our warranty is what stands behind them.

The sprung and webbed seat platform, the fluting work and the bolster construction are covered against manufacturing defect.

Black lacquer and gold is the hardest combination to match by eye, so both are recorded against your order number, along with the covering used. Any later retouch is worked from that record rather than approximated. Contact us with your order number and we will arrange it.
