Rectangular Wall Mirror in Gilded Teak with Cartouche Bosses and a Crest

The four carved bosses on this frame are not where the arithmetic would put them.

Measure the frame overall, including the crest above and the cartouche below, find the halfway point, and put the side bosses there - and they will look low. That is because the eye does not measure the frame. It measures the bright rectangle of glass, and it reads the crest as something sitting above the piece rather than as part of its height.

So our artisans set the side bosses to the midpoint of the plate opening, not of the frame, and then check it by eye on the assembled piece before the carving is finally cut in. On a tall mirror with a big crest the difference between the two positions can be considerable, and it is the difference between a frame that looks balanced and one that feels subtly wrong for reasons nobody articulates.

The same logic decides how far the corner scrolls break outward and how high the crest can go before it stops reading as a crown and starts reading as a second object. All of it is set out afresh for every size we are asked to make, because none of these relationships survive being scaled up or down.

Material: solid teak throughout, hand-carved by master Indian artisans.

Structure: slim rectangular frame with a beaded moulding and plate rebate; carved cartouche bosses at the centre of each side; foliate corner scrolls; shell crest above and cartouche below, joined to the frame.

Finish: hand-laid gilding, burnished on the carving. Silver, ivory, champagne, black with gold and natural teak available.

Plate: rectangular mirror glass, plain or bevelled, set into a rebate from the back.

Hanging: concealed fixings supplied and rated for the finished weight; portrait or landscape set at the time of order.

On a slim frame the vulnerable points are exactly the places where the carving breaks outward - the four corner scrolls, the four bosses, the crest and the base cartouche.

Each of those is padded individually with shaped foam before any general wrapping begins, so the outline of the package sits well clear of the carving itself. The plain runs of beaded moulding between them are faced with continuous foam so no single point takes pressure.

The plate is filmed and backed with a cut board so the glass carries no load anywhere.

The mirror is then wrapped in laminated foam and bubble wrap and crated in a fitted wooden case, carried on edge and marked for orientation. Multi-layer protective packaging is standard and dent-free arrival is guaranteed.

The solid teak frame and its joinery carry a 20-year Brown Rabbit warranty - the rectangular frame, its mitres and the joints holding the crest, the base cartouche, the corner scrolls and the side bosses.

A lifetime warranty against termite damage runs with the mirror for as long as you own it, backed by teak's natural termite resistance and set out in writing.

The gilding is laid and burnished by hand, so the shine varies slightly between the carved points and the plain runs of moulding. That contrast is intended - it is what makes the ornament read from across a room.
