A gilded teak mirror with a pierced acanthus frame, side rosettes, shell crest and scrolled base, hand-carved and made to order by Brown Rabbit.

The near-square plate makes this an easy piece to place where a tall mirror would not fit - between two windows, over a small chest, at the turn of a stair, or above a fireplace that is wider than it is high.

Because the frame is cut through, the wall colour behind it becomes part of the design, and the rosettes read strongest against a plain ground. Tell us the wall colour and we can advise on how warm to lay the gilding.

The rosettes can be carved as open flowers as shown or as tighter paterae, the crest raised or lowered, and the plate supplied plain or bevelled. Custom sizes are made to order and final measurements are confirmed in writing before production.

A carved rosette is either convincing or it is a wooden button, and the difference is that it is made in two layers.

Cut a flower from a single thickness and every petal springs from the same plane, which is not how a flower works. So our artisans carve the under-layer first - the broad outer petals, laid back and shallow - and then carve a second, smaller layer of inner petals from separate stock and set it into the centre, rotated so that the upper petals fall between the lower ones rather than on top of them.

That rotation is the whole trick. It is what puts a real shadow between the two rings of petals, and it is why the flower keeps its depth when it is gilded and everything becomes one colour.

The centre boss goes in last, sitting slightly proud, so there is a highlight at the middle of each rosette that the eye finds immediately from across the room.

Material: solid teak throughout, hand-carved by master Indian artisans.

Structure: rectangular inner frame with a carved plate slip; pierced acanthus surround worked as panels and joined to the frame; two-layer rosettes at the side centres; shell crest and scrolled base joined in separately.

Finish: gold gilding over the carved surface, burnished on the petals and scroll tips. Silver, ivory, champagne, black with gold and natural teak available.

Plate: plain mirror glass as photographed; bevelled plate available on request.

Hanging: concealed fixings supplied and rated for the finished weight, with fixing centres provided ahead of delivery.

Sizes: custom sizes made to order - final measurements confirmed in writing before production.

Photography: images on this page are photographs of the actual product, not renders.

The rosettes stand proudest on this frame and the pierced acanthus around them is all edges, so both are packed from the inside.

Foam is worked into the openings behind the acanthus so the carving is supported from within, and each rosette is capped individually with shaped foam so nothing bears on the petals.

The shell crest, which projects furthest at the top, gets its own moulded cap. The plate is faced with film and backed with a cut board so the glass carries no load.

The mirror is then wrapped in laminated foam and bubble wrap and crated in a fitted wooden case, carried on edge and marked for orientation. Multi-layer protective packaging is standard and dent-free arrival is guaranteed.

Free delivery anywhere in India is included in the price - no separate freight charge, no distance loading, no surcharge for a smaller town.

Production begins once your size, plate and finish are confirmed in writing. You get a realistic production window at that stage and updates as the piece moves through carving, gilding, glazing and crating.

The consignment is tracked and our team stays reachable throughout. Dent-free arrival is guaranteed and it is ours to honour.

Tell us about any narrow stair, small lift or tight doorway when you order and we plan the crate and route around it before the mirror leaves the workshop.

Brown Rabbit warrants the solid teak frame and its joinery for 20 years - the inner frame, the joints holding the pierced panels, the rosette seatings and the crest and base attachments.

A lifetime warranty against termite damage runs with the mirror for as long as you own it, resting on teak's natural termite resistance and set down in writing.

The gilding is laid and burnished by hand across petals, scrolls and beads, so the brightness varies from one surface to the next. That variation is what keeps a fully gilded frame from flattening into a single sheet of gold.

Written warranty terms are issued with your order so the cover is agreed before production begins.
