A gilded teak hallway mirror with a central plate, margin plates on all four sides and a carved cartouche crest, hand-carved and made to order by Brown Rabbit.

Hallways reward this format. The margin border lets us make a mirror as wide as the wall deserves without the central reflection becoming vast, so the piece fills the space while the working part of it stays at a comfortable human size. It is also why the design suits a landing or the wall above a hall console.

Placement is worth planning. A hall mirror hung opposite a window or a doorway will pick up that light and carry it, so tell us what is across from the wall you have in mind and we can set the proportion accordingly.

The gilding can be laid warmer or paler, the openwork made fuller or lighter, and the crest built taller for a high ceiling. Custom sizes are made to order and the final measurements are confirmed in writing before production begins.

A mirror made from several plates has one obvious risk: three reflections of the same person, slightly out of step with each other.

The fix is depth. Our artisans set the margin plates a small distance further back than the central plate, so the two sit in different planes. Stand in front of the mirror and your reflection appears once, in the middle, where you expect it. The margins are angled away from you and what they return instead is the light and colour of the room behind - a soft bright border rather than a set of competing portraits.

That recess is set out on the frame drawing before any glass is ordered, because the depth of the rebate and the thickness of the carved bars that cover the joins have to agree with each other. Get it wrong by a few millimetres and either the ornament stands off the surface or the margins come forward and the doubling returns.

It is why this design has survived three centuries and why it still has to be drawn carefully every single time.

Material: solid teak throughout, hand-carved by master Indian artisans.

Structure: central plate in a moulded inner frame; margin plates set in a recessed plane around it; carved bars, corner openwork and centre clasps covering the joins; cartouche crest joined to the top rail.

Finish: gold gilding over the carved surfaces, burnished on the raised ornament. Silver, ivory, champagne, black with gold and natural teak available.

Plates: mirror glass throughout, central plate plain or bevelled to your choice.

Hanging: concealed fixings supplied and rated for the finished weight; fixing centres provided ahead of delivery.

Sizes: custom sizes made to order - final measurements confirmed in writing before production.

Photography: images on this page are photographs of the actual product, not renders.

Several plates in one frame means several pieces of glass to protect, and the margins are the narrowest and therefore the most sensitive of them.

Each plate is faced with a soft film and backed with its own cut board, so no piece of glass carries load and none can flex against another. The carved bars that cross the joins are padded separately, and the openwork corners are packed with foam pressed into their voids rather than compressed from outside.

The crest gets a moulded cap of its own before the outer layers go on. The complete mirror is then wrapped in laminated foam and bubble wrap and crated in a fitted wooden case, marked for orientation and carried on edge.

Multi-layer protective packaging is standard and dent-free arrival is guaranteed on every order.

Delivery is free anywhere in India and included in the price - no freight line, no distance loading, no surcharge for smaller towns.

Production starts once your size, plate specification and finish are confirmed in writing. You get an honest production window then, and updates as the piece moves through carving, gilding, glazing and crating.

Shipment is tracked and our team stays reachable throughout. Dent-free arrival is guaranteed and it is ours to honour.

Hallways often mean tight turns. If your entrance, stair or lift has a size limit, tell us when you order and we plan the crate and the route around it before the mirror leaves the workshop.

The solid teak frame and its joinery are covered by a 20-year Brown Rabbit warranty. On a margin mirror that means the inner frame, the outer frame, the intermediate bars that carry the margin plates and the crest joint - the whole structure that keeps the several plates in one true plane.

A lifetime warranty against termite damage runs alongside, for as long as you own the piece. Teak's natural oils resist termites, and we back that with a written guarantee.

The gilding is hand-laid and hand-burnished, so the raised ornament shows variation in its shine along its length. That is a hand-gilded surface behaving correctly.

Written warranty terms are issued with the order so the cover is settled before we cut timber.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this product.

No. The margin plates are set in a plane slightly behind the central plate and angled away, so they return the light and colour of the room rather than a second image of you. Your reflection appears once, in the centre.

A margin mirror lets the piece be as wide as the wall deserves while the central reflection stays at a comfortable size. Send us the wall width, ceiling height and the height of any console below, and we will draw it to fit and confirm in writing.

Yes. It is drawn to your ceiling height, so it can be built up for a tall entrance hall or kept low where there is less wall above.

Your choice. A bevel adds a bright refracted line around the main reflection; a plain plate keeps it clean. Tell us at the time of order.

Silver, ivory, champagne, black with gold and natural teak. We can prepare a finish approach for your approval before the piece is completed.

Solid teak throughout, hand-carved by master Indian artisans, with a 20-year warranty on the frame and joinery and a lifetime warranty against termite damage.

Each plate is faced and backed with its own cut board so none carries load or flexes against another, the carved bars and openwork corners are padded separately, and the whole mirror travels on edge in a fitted crate.

Yes, they are photographs of the real piece and not renders. Your mirror is made to the same design and finish in the size you specify.
