Dressing Mirror in Gilded Teak with an Oval Laurel Wreath

A dressing mirror hung at the wrong height is a mirror people stop using, so we ask a question that most mirror makers do not: how tall is the person who will use it?

The useful part of a mirror this size is a band around its middle. Hang it so that band sits too high and you are looking at your hairline; too low and you are stooping. Neither is dramatic, and that is exactly why it goes unfixed for years - it is a small daily annoyance rather than an obvious fault.

So the hanging position is worked out before the mirror leaves us. From the height you give us, we calculate where the centre of the plate should sit, and from that where the fixing needs to go on the wall - accounting for the drop between the hanging point on the back rail and the centre of the glass, which is not the same distance on every design.

The back rail is then drilled at two points rather than one, a little apart vertically, so the mirror can be moved up or down after it is first offered to the wall.

The measurement is written on the paperwork that travels with the mirror.

Material: solid teak in the frame rings, wreath, clasps and back rail.

Shape: upright oval, set out as a true ellipse.

Glass: bevelled oval centre plate within an oval mirrored margin, divided by a slim moulded gilt ring.

Carving: laurel wreath around the full oval, rose and ribbon knot at the top, tie at the base, rosette clasps at both sides.

Back: solid rail drilled at two heights so the hanging position can be adjusted at the wall.

Supplied: with the recommended centre height calculated from the user's height, recorded on the paperwork.

Finish: gilded by hand, raised leaves burnished brighter than the grounds.

Made to order: size, oval proportion, wreath design and finish are all customisable. Custom sizes made to order - final measurements confirmed in writing before production.

Two plates travel here, and the bevelled centre plate is the more delicate of them.

Its face is taped in a grid so an impact cannot spread, a soft foam strip is run around the bevelled edge, and a rigid board cut to the oval is fitted over it. The mirrored margin is wrapped separately with its edges padded.

The gilded frame takes acid-free tissue directly against the gold, then foam padding shaped around the rings.

The wreath is carved in relief with undercut leaf tips all the way round, so foam is pressed in behind the leaves rather than laid across them, and the rose knot at the top is given its own moulded block.

The mirror travels flat in a hardwood crate, corner-protected and marked for orientation. Multi-layer protective packaging is included on every order at no extra cost.

On site, our team marks the fixing at the calculated height, hangs the mirror level and checks the reflection from where you will stand.

Both plates and the hanging fixings are covered against manufacturing defect. The ellipse and the bevel are recorded, so a replacement centre plate can be cut and ground to match the original.
