A gilded teak living room mirror with a rectangular plate, a beaded inner moulding and a pierced acanthus surround, hand-carved and made to order by Brown Rabbit.

The design works on three depths. The plate sits furthest back. The beaded moulding frames it tightly and holds the eye on the reflection. Then the acanthus breaks forward and outward, standing proud of the frame line so the mirror casts its own shadow on the wall. That layering is why a piece like this reads well from across a room and still rewards a close look.

Scale is yours to set. Above a three-seat sofa the plate usually wants to be a little narrower than the sofa itself, with the carving making up the visual width - and we can draw it that way for your exact wall. The gilding can be laid warm or pale, the bevel width adjusted, and the plate specified plain if you prefer the surround to do all the talking.

Custom sizes are made to order and the final measurements are confirmed in writing before we begin.

The showy part of this mirror is the acanthus. The part that decides whether it looks right is the row of beads around the plate.

A beaded moulding is a repeating element, and a repeating element has to arrive at each corner cleanly. Run the beads at a standard pitch and you finish with a half bead in three corners out of four, which nobody can name but everybody notices. Our artisans set out each side separately, count the beads that will fit, and then adjust the pitch by a fraction of a millimetre across the whole run so a full bead lands exactly at each mitre.

Because the mirror is made to order in your dimensions, that count is redone from scratch for every single piece. The bead is not a stock moulding cut to length. It is set out for your frame, on your proportions, so that the tightest, most disciplined element in the design stays disciplined - and the acanthus around it is free to be as loose and unruly as it likes.

Material: solid teak throughout, hand-carved by master Indian artisans.

Construction: jointed rectangular frame carrying the plate rebate and beaded moulding; pierced acanthus surround and crest carved and joined to the frame; corners mitred and pinned.

Finish: gold gilding over the carved surface, burnished on the raised leaf tips. Silver, ivory, champagne, black with gold and natural teak are available as alternatives.

Plate: bevelled mirror glass as photographed; plain plate available on request. Bevel width set to suit the frame proportions.

Hanging: concealed fixings supplied, rated for the finished weight of the piece.

Sizes: custom sizes made to order - final measurements confirmed in writing before production.

Photography: the images here are photographs of the actual product, not renders.

Openwork carving is the packing problem here. Acanthus leaves that stand clear of the frame have thin tips that can be caught by a careless hand long before they are troubled by a truck.

So the surround is wrapped in soft foam that is worked into the spaces between the leaves, supporting each tip from underneath instead of pressing on it from above. The crest, which projects furthest, is given a moulded cap of its own.

The plate is faced with film and backed with a cut board so the glass is never carrying load. The complete mirror then goes into laminated foam and bubble wrap, and finally into a fitted wooden crate that is marked for the correct orientation.

Multi-layer protective packaging comes as standard, and we guarantee the piece arrives dent-free. If it does not, we make it right.

Delivery is free anywhere in India. The price you see includes getting the mirror to your door, whichever state you are in.

Production starts once your size, finish and plate specification are confirmed in writing. We give you an honest production window at that point and keep you updated as the piece moves from carving to gilding to crating.

Shipment is tracked and our team stays reachable through it. Dent-free arrival is guaranteed, and the guarantee is on us to honour.

Large mirrors sometimes meet tight staircases and small lifts. Tell us about any access constraint when you order and we size the crate and plan the route accordingly, before the piece leaves the workshop.

The solid teak frame and its joinery carry a 20-year Brown Rabbit warranty. That means the rectangular carcass frame, the mitres, the joints where the acanthus panels meet the frame and the crest attachment - everything structural in the piece.

Running alongside it is a lifetime warranty against termite damage, for as long as the mirror is yours. Teak resists termites naturally through the oils in the timber, and we put that in writing rather than leaving it as a general claim about the wood.

Gilding is applied by hand and burnished by hand, so it carries small variations from one leaf tip to the next. That is how a hand-gilded surface is supposed to look and it is what separates it from a sprayed gold finish.

Written warranty terms come with the order, so you know exactly what is covered before production starts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this product.

As a working rule the plate looks best a little narrower than the sofa, with the carved surround making up the visual width. Send us your sofa width and wall height and we will draw the mirror to suit, then confirm the measurements in writing before production.

Yes. The surround is openwork, so the wall shows through the gaps between the leaves. That is what gives the frame its depth and lets it cast a shadow of its own on the wall.

Yes, both are available. A bevel adds a line of refracted light around the reflection; a plain plate keeps the surface quiet so the carving leads. Tell us which you want at the time of order.

Silver, ivory, champagne, black with gold and natural teak are all available on this frame. We can prepare a finish sample approach for approval before the piece is completed.

Concealed fixings are supplied and rated for the finished weight. We tell you the fixing centres in advance so your wall can be prepared before the mirror arrives.

Solid teak throughout - frame, surround and crest - carved by master Indian artisans. It is backed by a 20-year frame warranty and a lifetime termite warranty.

Teak is a favoured timber in humid climates because it moves very little and resists rot and termites naturally. The frame is built and finished with that in mind.

Yes, every image is a photograph of the actual piece rather than a render. Your mirror is made to the same carving pattern and finish, in the size you specify.
