A champagne-finished teak mirror with deep pierced scrollwork, an egg-and-dart inner band and a bevelled plate, hand-carved and made to order by Brown Rabbit.

The depth is the point. This frame stands well proud of the wall and the carving is cut right through, so under a downlight or a wall light it produces real shadow and the piece changes as you move past it. A flatter frame in the same outline would look like a picture of this one.

The champagne tone can be pushed warmer, toward a pale gold, or cooler, toward a pewter, depending on the metals already in your room - taps, handles, lighting. Tell us what those are and we will match the temperature rather than guessing.

The bevel width can be set wider or narrower against the egg-and-dart band, and the piece can be made in portrait, landscape or square. Custom sizes are made to order with final measurements confirmed in writing before production.

A frame carved this deep cannot be cut from a single plank, and the reason is short grain.

Wherever a scroll curls back on itself, the fibres of the timber run across the narrow neck of the curl rather than along it. In a solid board that neck is a weak point waiting for the first knock. So the blank for a frame like this is laminated: several thicknesses of teak glued together, with the grain of the middle layer set at an angle to the outer ones.

The result is that every curl has some long grain running through it in at least one direction, whichever way the scroll happens to turn. The carver can then cut confidently into the tightest part of a volute instead of leaving it thick and safe - which is precisely what allows the openwork to be as fine as it is.

Because all the layers are teak, nothing behaves differently from anything else as the seasons change, and once the piece is carved and finished the lamination is invisible. What you see is a frame carved deeper than a solid one would allow.

Material: solid teak throughout, hand-carved by master Indian artisans; deep sections built from laminated teak blanks with alternating grain for strength in the pierced work.

Structure: pierced scroll frame on a jointed carcass; carved egg-and-dart band around the plate opening.

Finish: champagne, adjustable warmer toward pale gold or cooler toward pewter. Gold, silver, ivory, black with gold and natural teak also available.

Plate: bevelled mirror glass as photographed, bevel width set to suit the frame; plain plate available.

Hanging: concealed fixings supplied and rated for the finished weight; portrait, landscape or square set at the time of order.

Sizes: custom sizes made to order - final measurements confirmed in writing before production.

Photography: images on this page are photographs of the actual product, not renders.

Deep openwork means the frame's outermost scrolls stand well clear of everything behind them, so the packing has to reach in rather than press on.

Foam is worked into the voids between the scrolls to support the carving from within, and the corner volutes - the highest points on the piece - are capped individually before the outer layers go on.

The bevelled plate is faced with film and backed with a cut board so the glass carries no load, with particular care at the bevel edge where the glass is thinnest.

The mirror then goes into laminated foam, bubble wrap and a fitted wooden crate, carried on edge and marked for orientation. Multi-layer protective packaging is standard and dent-free arrival is guaranteed on every order.

Delivery anywhere in India is free and included in the price - no freight line, no distance loading, no surcharge for a smaller town.

Production begins once your size, orientation, bevel and finish temperature are confirmed in writing. We give a realistic production window then and update you as the piece moves through carving, finishing, glazing and crating.

The shipment is tracked and our team stays reachable throughout the journey. Dent-free arrival is guaranteed and it is ours to honour.

Tell us about any tight stair, small lift or narrow doorway at the time of order and we plan the crate size and the route around it before the mirror leaves the workshop.

Brown Rabbit warrants the solid teak frame and its joinery for 20 years - the carcass frame, the joints holding the pierced scroll panels and the egg-and-dart band, and the laminated blanks from which the deep sections are carved.

A lifetime warranty against termite damage runs with the piece for as long as you own it, resting on teak's natural termite resistance and confirmed in writing.

The champagne finish is hand-applied, so its tone varies subtly across the carving - brighter on the crests of the scrolls, quieter in the recesses. That gradation is what keeps a pale metallic finish from looking sprayed.

Written warranty terms are issued with your order, so the cover is agreed before we begin.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this product.

Paler, warmer and slightly matt - closer to old silver-gilt than to bright gold. It reads as a neutral metallic rather than a period one, which is why it sits easily with grey, taupe, white and pale timber.

Yes. It can be pushed warmer toward a pale gold or cooler toward a pewter. Tell us what metals are already in the room and we will match the temperature rather than guessing.

Because deep scrollwork leaves short grain at every curl. Laminating teak layers with alternating grain puts strength through every direction the carving turns, which is what lets the openwork be cut this fine. All the layers are teak, so the piece behaves as one material.
