A carved teak statement mirror with black fluted shells, gilded scrollwork and a broad frame, hand-made to order by Brown Rabbit.

A piece like this is best given room. On a wall by itself - above a long console, at the end of a drawing room, on a landing you see from below - it does the work of a large painting, and the black elements give it enough weight to hold a big space that a purely gilded frame would not.

The proportion of black to gold is adjustable. More black makes the piece graphic and modern; more gold makes it warmer and more traditional. We finish a sample area either way for your approval.

Size is where a statement piece is usually won or lost, so we would rather draw it to your wall than sell you a standard. Send us the wall dimensions and what sits below, and we will propose the size. Custom sizes are made to order and final measurements are confirmed in writing before production.

The fluted shells on this frame are the reason it reads so strongly from a distance, and the flutes are not parallel.

A shell radiates. Its flutes all spring from a single origin point below the shell and fan outward, which means the spacing between them widens as they travel and each flute is a slightly different width from its neighbour. Set them out as parallel grooves - which is far quicker - and the shell flattens into a piece of corrugation.

So our artisans strike the origin point on the workpiece first, well outside the shell itself, and draw every flute as a radius from it. The gouge is then worked along each line with the deepest cut at the wide end, tapering as the flutes converge toward the origin.

Finished in black, those radiating flutes produce a fan of parallel shadows that changes as you cross the room. That movement is what a statement piece needs. It is also why the shells are the black elements and the scrolls are the gold ones - shadow does more work in black, and light does more work in gold.

Material: solid teak throughout, hand-carved by master Indian artisans.

Structure: broad rectangular frame with a fine gilded slip around the plate; carved scrollwork and leafwork across the frame; fluted shells at the corners and centres.

Finish: black on the fluted shells and ground, hand-laid gilding on the scrollwork and slip. The black-to-gold balance is set to your preference.

Plate: rectangular mirror glass, plain or bevelled, set into a rebate from the back.

Hanging: concealed fixings supplied and rated for the finished weight, with fixing centres provided ahead of delivery.

Sizes: custom sizes made to order - final measurements confirmed in writing before production.

Photography: images on this page are photographs of the actual product, not renders.

A broad frame with carving breaking outward at the corners takes its risk at exactly those corners, so they are protected first.

Each corner shell and the scrollwork around it is capped with shaped foam before general wrapping starts, keeping the outline of the package clear of the carving. The centre shells are padded individually as well.

The black surfaces are faced with a soft, clean, non-transferring layer before any foam or tape comes near them, because a dark hand finish shows a mark that gold would hide.

The plate is filmed and backed with a cut board so the glass carries no load. The mirror then goes into laminated foam, bubble wrap and a fitted wooden crate, carried on edge and marked for orientation. Multi-layer protective packaging is standard and dent-free arrival is guaranteed.

Delivery anywhere in India is free and included in the price - no separate freight charge, no distance loading, no surcharge for smaller towns.

Production begins once your size, plate and the balance of black to gold are confirmed in writing. You get a realistic production window at that stage and updates as the piece moves through carving, finishing, gilding, glazing and crating.

The shipment is tracked and our team stays reachable throughout. Dent-free arrival is guaranteed and it is our responsibility to honour.

A statement mirror makes a large crate. Tell us your doorway, stair and lift dimensions at the time of order and we plan the crating and route around them before the piece leaves the workshop.

Brown Rabbit warrants the solid teak frame and its joinery for 20 years - the broad frame, its corner joints, the plate rebate and every joint holding the carved shells and scrollwork.

A lifetime warranty against termite damage runs with the mirror for as long as you own it, resting on teak's natural termite resistance and set down in writing.

The black and the gilding are both applied by hand, so each piece carries its own small variations in tone and shine. That is the nature of hand finishing and it is what gives the mirror depth at close range.

Written warranty terms are issued with your order so the cover is settled before we begin.

Larger than feels safe, usually. Send us the wall dimensions and what sits below it and we will propose a size drawn to that wall, then confirm the measurements in writing before production.

Carved by hand in solid teak, with every flute set out as a radius from a single origin point so the fan widens correctly. Parallel grooves are quicker and look like corrugation.
