Overview

This is a hand-carved solid teak wood wall mirror finished in gold, built as a large oval bevelled plate set within a rectangular frame. The design vocabulary is high neoclassical: a laurel wreath tied with ribbon over crossed torches forming a trophy at the crest, laurel sprays running out along the cornice, flame-topped urn finials on plinths at both shoulders, rose and leaf garlands trailing down the corners and gathering into a bow at the base, a twisted laurel moulding following the oval, and a fluted pilaster on each stile. The spandrels between the oval and the rectangle are left plain so the ornament reads.

It is made for formal interiors - a drawing room, a dining room, an entrance hall, a principal bedroom, or a period-influenced scheme where the mirror is expected to look considered rather than decorative alone. The bevelled oval is generous, so this works as a functional mirror as well as an architectural one, and the rectangular outline hangs comfortably beside panelling and pictures. Every garland bloom is carved individually and the crest motif can be changed to your brief.

The Story Behind This Mirror

A trophy crest is a composition, not a motif. Crossed torches, a laurel wreath and a tied ribbon all have to overlap convincingly - the wreath in front of the torch shafts, the ribbon over the wreath, the ends falling free - and every one of those overlaps is an undercut. Carve them on a single plane and the trophy reads as a flat badge; carve them in true depth and it reads as objects laid one over another. That difference is several days of work.

The urns are turned before they are carved, and their flame finials shaped from the solid so the flame appears to twist. The garlands trailing down the corners are cut as continuous runs with each bloom on its own axis, gathering into a carved bow at the base.

The twisted laurel moulding around the oval is run last and is the most exacting element: a continuous spiral of overlapping leaves that must keep constant pitch all the way round a curve, where there is no corner to hide a correction. Then hand-sanding, gold in coats, rubbed back at the wreath, flame tips and petal edges, and the bevelled oval fitted at the end.

Packaging and Transit Protection

The trophy crest is the most complex carving on the piece and the most exposed: overlapping wreath, torches and ribbon ends, all undercut and all breakable. It is wrapped first, in high-density foam shaped around the components rather than pressed flat over them, and taped clear of the gilding. The flame urn finials are unshipped where the construction allows and wrapped individually; each garland bloom is foam-wrapped along the run.

The frame is faced with a soft interleaf, sleeved in a continuous foam blanket, corner-guarded at all four corners and blocked into a fitted wooden crate with foam on every face so nothing can shift on a long road journey. The oval bevelled plate is covered with a shatter-retention film and backed with a rigid board cut to the full rectangle of the frame, so the glass is supported to the edge rather than only across the aperture. The crate is marked for orientation, fragility and lifting points, strapped and sealed. We photograph everything wrapped and the crate closed before dispatch.

Shipping and Delivery

Every piece is carved and turned after you order. Typical lead time is 4 to 6 weeks from confirmation, sitting toward the longer end as standard because the trophy crest, the turned urns and the individually carved garland blooms are all slow work. Changing the crest motif or the finial style requires a design step before carving begins and adds time. The exact timeline is confirmed in writing at order and we share progress photographs after carving and again after gilding, so you approve the actual frame before it ships.

Delivery is free anywhere in India. We arrange and manage transport and our team coordinates unloading and placement at your address rather than leaving a crate at the gate. Please tell us in advance about stairs, lift dimensions or society service-entry restrictions so the route can be planned - note the crate is sized to the finials and crest, so it is taller and wider than the mirror itself. We advise on hanging hardware for your wall type. International orders are quoted case by case.

Craftsmanship Assurance and Care

Our craftsmanship assurance covers the solid teak frame, the carving, the turning and the joinery. If a joint opens, a finial works loose or a carved element separates because of a fault in the making - rather than through impact, misuse, unsuitable fixing or an attempted self-repair - we repair or replace it. Glass breakage after delivery and water damage sit outside the assurance.

The wreath, the torch shafts and the garland blooms all carry undercuts that will catch a cloth, so use a clean dry soft brush on the crest, the urn flames and the garlands, working gently and from above. A soft dry cloth suits the fluted pilasters, the plain spandrels and the twisted laurel moulding. Never use water, chemical polish, alcohol or ammonia-based cleaners on the gilded surface - gold rubbed back by hand cannot be spot-repaired invisibly once stripped. Spray glass cleaner onto the cloth rather than at the plate so nothing runs behind the oval. Keep the mirror out of direct sunlight and away from heat and air-conditioner outflow. Mount on a solid wall with anchors rated well above its weight and check the fixings once a year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this product.

Yes. The frame, crest, urns and garlands are all genuine solid teak, hand-selected and seasoned before carving and turning. There is no veneer, MDF or engineered wood in the piece.

Yes, the large oval plate is bevelled, so the edge picks up light around its full perimeter and throws it back into the room. A plain flat plate can be specified instead if you prefer.

A classical trophy - a laurel wreath tied with ribbon over crossed torches. Each element is carved to overlap the one behind it in true depth rather than on a single plane, which is what stops it reading as a flat badge.

Yes. The crest and the finial style can both be changed to your brief. That requires a design step before carving begins, so tell us at the enquiry stage and allow extra time.

Yes. Overall size, oval proportion, garland density and polish tone are all made to order. Send us your wall dimensions and we will scale the design and quote.

This design sits toward the longer end of our 4 to 6 week window because of the trophy crest, the turned urns and the individually carved garland blooms. Shipping is free anywhere in India.
