Overview

This is a hand-carved solid teak wood swept frame finished in gold, made as a mirror frame and shown here as the bare carved timber before glazing. Its design language is the classic swept profile: an outward-curving outer edge, carved shell at the centre of the top rail, a matching shell at the base, scrolled acanthus cartouches at all four corners, and a fluted gadroon border running around the aperture. Between the ornament, the sweep is left plain and polished, which is what lets the carved passages register rather than compete.

This is the most adaptable piece in the mirror range. It is restrained enough for a bedroom, a study or a guest room, decorative enough to carry a hall wall by itself, and it can be built in a size to sit above a chest, a console or a basin. Because it is made to order, the same design can take a mirror plate or a canvas, and the frame width can be scaled up for a large wall or down for an intimate one. Handcrafted Indian luxury in its most usable form.

The Story Behind This Frame

A swept frame is judged on its plain surfaces, not its carving. Any workshop can cut a shell; very few can run a continuous outward sweep along four rails, bring them together at mitred corners, and leave a surface smooth enough that gold lies on it without a ripple. That is why this frame starts with the most carefully selected boards in the workshop - straight, tight-grained seasoned teak, matched for colour across all four rails.

The sweep is worked first, by hand, and then refined with scrapers rather than only abrasive, because scraping leaves a surface that abrasive cannot match. The mitres are cut and fitted dry until the joint closes without pressure - a swept profile shows a bad mitre from across a room. Only then is the ornament carved: the shells shaped from the solid with their flutes standing proud, the corner cartouches cut so the acanthus breaks over the sweep rather than sitting on top of it, and the gadroon border run last around the aperture. Hand-sanding follows, then gold in coats, rubbed back at the gadroons and shell ridges. Glass is cut and fitted to your size at the end.

Packaging and Transit Protection

On a swept frame the risk is not breakage so much as rubbing: a plain gilded sweep will show any scuff it picks up in transit, and a scuff on a smooth surface is far more visible than one lost in carving. So the whole frame is faced with a soft interleaf before any foam touches it. The shell crest, the base shell and the four corner cartouches are then individually wrapped in high-density foam and taped clear of the gilding.

The frame is sleeved in a continuous foam blanket, corner-guarded at all four corners and blocked into a fitted wooden crate with foam on every face so it cannot slide and rub. Where the frame ships glazed, the plate is covered with a shatter-retention film and backed with a rigid board first. The crate is marked for orientation and fragility, strapped and sealed, and we photograph the frame wrapped and the crate closed before dispatch. On arrival, open against the packing list and check the plain sweep for marks as well as the carving before signing.

Shipping and Delivery

Every frame is made to order. Typical lead time is 4 to 6 weeks from confirmation, at the shorter end for a modest size in the standard gold and at the longer end for a large frame, a bespoke polish or a bevelled plate. Confirm at the order stage whether you want the frame glazed with mirror or supplied unglazed for artwork, since that changes both the rebate and the packing. The exact timeline is confirmed in writing and we share photographs after carving and after gilding.

Delivery is free anywhere in India. We arrange and manage the transport and our team coordinates unloading and placement at your address rather than leaving a crate at the gate. Tell us in advance about stairs, lift dimensions or society service-entry restrictions so we can plan. We advise on hanging hardware for your wall type. International orders are quoted case by case - send us the destination and we will price freight and documentation separately.

Craftsmanship Assurance and Care

Our craftsmanship assurance covers the solid teak frame, the carving and - on a swept frame especially - the mitred joints. If a mitre opens or a carved element separates because of a fault in the making rather than through impact, misuse, unsuitable fixing or an attempted self-repair, we repair or replace it. Glass breakage after delivery and water damage are outside the assurance.

Care is easier here than on a pierced frame, because most of the surface is smooth. A soft dry cloth along the sweep is enough for routine dusting; use a clean dry soft brush in the shell flutes, the gadroon border and the corner cartouches. Never use water, chemical polish, alcohol or ammonia-based cleaners on the gilded surface - on a plain swept surface any stripped patch is immediately visible and cannot be spot-repaired invisibly. Spray glass cleaner onto the cloth rather than onto the mirror so nothing runs into the rebate. Keep the frame out of direct sunlight and away from heat and air-conditioner outflow, mount it on a solid wall with anchors rated above its weight, and check the fixings once a year.
