Overview

This is a hand-carved solid teak wood cushion mirror finished in gold, composed of a central rectangular plate framed on all four sides by mirrored marginal panels. The design language is French Regence: a cameo cartouche crest sitting on a stepped architectural cornice, pierced fleur-de-lys motifs breaking into each corner of the margin, carved rosettes centred on both side rails and the base rail, and a fine gilt-carved moulding separating the central plate from the margins. Every element is symmetrical about both axes.

The point of the cushion construction is light. With mirror on all four margins as well as the centre, the entire face of the piece reflects, so it returns far more light into a room than a single-plate mirror of the same outside dimension. That makes it the right choice for a north-facing drawing room, a dining wall opposite a window, an entrance hall or a formal bedroom - anywhere the room needs opening up rather than merely decorating. Margin width, plate proportion and gold tone are all specified by you.

The Story Behind This Mirror

A cushion mirror is really five mirrors that have to behave as one. If the margins are cut a fraction out of true, the reflections in them break the line of the central plate and the whole face looks fractured. So the frame is set out and the rebates cut with far more precision than a single-plate design demands, and the dividing mouldings are made to hold each panel dead flat - a margin that bows shows immediately in what it reflects.

The carving is done separately and applied to that structure. The cameo cartouche at the crest is shaped from the solid and carved in relief within its oval. The fleur-de-lys motifs at the corners are pierced right through, so the margin glass shows behind them and the ornament appears to float on the reflection rather than sit on wood. The rosettes on the side and base rails are cut individually. Then hand-sanding through progressive grits, gold laid in coats and rubbed back at the cornice edges and the fleur tips, and the glazing fitted last: margins first, working round, and the central plate closed in at the end.

Packaging and Transit Protection

Five panes of glass in one frame means five things that can crack, and the marginal panels are thinner and more vulnerable than the central plate. Each margin is separately covered with a shatter-retention film and faced with its own rigid board before anything else is done, then blocked so it cannot flex against its rebate. The central plate is protected the same way. The cameo crest and the pierced fleur-de-lys corners are individually foam-wrapped and taped clear of the gilding.

The frame is then sleeved in a continuous foam blanket, corner-guarded at all four corners and set into a fitted wooden crate with foam blocking on every face, so it cannot shift or twist on a long road journey - twist is what cracks marginal glass. The crate is marked for orientation, fragility and lifting points, strapped and sealed. We photograph the piece wrapped and the crate closed before dispatch. On arrival, open against the packing list and inspect every one of the five panels, not just the central plate, before signing.

Shipping and Delivery

This mirror is made to order. Typical lead time is 4 to 6 weeks from confirmation, and the glazing stage adds time that a single-plate mirror does not need, since each margin is cut and fitted individually. Enlarging the frame or changing the margin width pushes it toward the longer end. The exact timeline is confirmed in writing at order and we share progress photographs after carving, after gilding and once the panels are glazed.

Delivery is free anywhere in India. We arrange transport sized to the crate and our team coordinates unloading and placement at your address rather than leaving a crate at the gate. Please confirm doorway and stair widths and lift internal dimensions in advance, and tell us about any service-entry restriction. Because the combined glass weight is significantly higher than a single-plate mirror of the same size, we advise on structural fixing for your wall type and recommend professional installation. International orders are quoted case by case on request.

Craftsmanship Assurance and Care

Our craftsmanship assurance covers the solid teak frame, the carving, the joinery and the dividing mouldings that hold the marginal panels flat. If a joint opens, a moulding lifts or a carved element separates through a fault in the making - rather than impact, misuse, unsuitable fixing or an attempted self-repair - we repair or replace it. Glass breakage after delivery and water damage sit outside the assurance.

Cleaning a cushion mirror needs one specific discipline: never spray anything directly at the glass. With five separate panels there are many more edges for liquid to run into, and cleaner that gets behind a margin will damage the silvering from the back where it cannot be reached. Always spray onto the cloth and wipe. Use a clean dry soft brush in the pierced fleur-de-lys corners, the cameo crest and the rosettes, and a soft dry cloth on the cornice and dividing mouldings. Never use water, chemical polish, alcohol or ammonia cleaners on the gilding. Keep the piece out of direct sunlight and away from heat and air-conditioner outflow. Because of the combined glass weight, mount on a structural wall and check the fixings annually.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this product.

Yes. The frame is genuine solid teak throughout, hand-selected and seasoned before carving. It is not veneer, MDF or engineered wood, and we confirm the wood in writing with your order.

Yes. All four marginal panels are genuine mirror, separate from the central plate. That is what makes a cushion mirror return far more light into a room than a single-plate mirror of the same size.

Yes. Overall size, central plate proportion and margin width are all made to order. Send us your wall dimensions and the proportion you want and we will quote.

Hand-carved and pierced right through the solid teak, so the margin glass shows behind the motif. The cameo crest and the rosettes are carved individually as well.

Always spray cleaner onto the cloth, never at the glass. With five panels there are many edges for liquid to run behind, and cleaner that reaches the back of the silvering cannot be repaired.

Typically 4 to 6 weeks from order confirmation, with extra time at the glazing stage since each panel is fitted individually. Shipping is free anywhere in India and our team coordinates unloading and placement.
