Overview

This is a hand-carved solid teak wood Rococo wall mirror finished in gold, built as a slim frame around a rectangular plate with a fine beaded border. The design language is restrained Rococo: a carved shell with a rosette at the centre of the top rail, a matching shell and scrollwork at the base, oval cartouche bosses centred on both side rails, and scrolled acanthus breaking outward from all four corners. Between those points the rails are left plain and polished, which is what gives the piece its clarity of outline.

It is made for rooms that need a mirror rather than a statement - a bedroom above a chest, a hallway, a study, a dressing area, a guest room, or a hotel bedroom where the piece must look considered without dominating. Because the ornament is placed at intervals rather than running continuously, it sits comfortably beside pictures, wallpaper and panelling. It is also one of the easier pieces to order as a matched pair or a set, since the composition reads well repeated. Size, carving depth and gold tone are all specified by you.

The Story Behind This Mirror

Restraint is a decision, not an absence. On a frame like this the carver has only four corners, two side bosses and two shells to work with, and long plain rails in between - which means each carved passage carries far more weight than it would on a densely worked frame. A corner scroll that is slightly shallow, or a shell whose flutes are not evenly spaced, has nothing nearby to distract from it.

The plain rails matter just as much. A polished plain surface under gold shows every ripple, so the rails are worked with scrapers rather than only abrasive, and the mitres are dry-fitted until they close without pressure - a visible joint on a slim frame ruins the outline the whole design depends on.

The shells are shaped from the solid with their flutes standing proud, the oval bosses carved and set into scrolled surrounds, and the corner acanthus undercut so it lifts clear of the rail. The beaded border is run last around the aperture. Then hand-sanding through progressive grits, gold in coats, rubbed back at the beads, shell ridges and scroll tips, and the plate fitted at the end.

Packaging and Transit Protection

On this frame the plain gilded rails are the real risk, not the carving: a scuff on a smooth surface is far more visible than one lost in ornament. So the whole frame is faced with a soft interleaf before any foam contacts it. The two shells, the oval side bosses and the four corner scrolls are then wrapped individually in high-density foam and taped clear of the gilding so no adhesive touches gold.

The frame is sleeved in a continuous foam blanket, corner-guarded at all four corners and blocked into a fitted wooden crate with foam on every face so it cannot slide and rub. Because the frame is slim, the crate is cross-braced against flex. The plate is covered with a shatter-retention film and rigid-board backed. Where a matched pair or set is ordered, each frame is individually wrapped and separated by rigid dividers. The crate is marked for orientation and fragility, strapped and sealed, and we photograph everything wrapped and closed before dispatch.

Shipping and Delivery

Every piece is carved after you order. Typical lead time is 4 to 6 weeks from confirmation, at the shorter end for a modest size in the standard gold and at the longer end for a large frame or a bespoke polish. A matched pair or set may take slightly longer, since the frames are carved alongside each other rather than in sequence so they match properly. The exact timeline is confirmed in writing at order and we share photographs after carving and after gilding.

Delivery is free anywhere in India. We arrange and manage transport and our team coordinates unloading and placement at your address rather than leaving a crate at the gate. Please tell us in advance about stairs, lift dimensions or society service-entry restrictions. If you are ordering a pair or set for a specific wall, tell us the spacing you intend and we will confirm overall dimensions before carving. We advise on hanging hardware for your wall type. International orders are quoted case by case.

Craftsmanship Assurance and Care

Our craftsmanship assurance covers the solid teak frame, the carving and - on a slim frame with plain rails, especially - the mitred joints. If a mitre opens or a carved element separates because of a fault in the making rather than through impact, misuse, unsuitable fixing or an attempted self-repair, we repair or replace it. Glass breakage after delivery and water damage sit outside the assurance.

This is the easiest mirror in the range to look after, because most of the frame is smooth. A soft dry cloth along the plain rails handles routine dusting; use a clean dry soft brush in the shell flutes, the oval bosses and the corner scrolls. Never use water, chemical polish, alcohol or ammonia-based cleaners on the gilded surface - on a plain polished rail any stripped patch is immediately visible and cannot be spot-repaired invisibly. Spray glass cleaner onto the cloth rather than at the plate so nothing runs into the beaded border. Keep the mirror out of direct sunlight and away from heat and air-conditioner outflow, mount it on a solid wall with anchors rated above its weight, and check the fixings once a year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this product.

Yes. All four rails are genuine solid teak, hand-selected, colour-matched and seasoned before carving. It is not veneer, MDF or engineered wood, and we confirm the wood in writing with your order.

Yes. This composition reads well repeated, and pairs and sets are carved alongside each other rather than in sequence so they genuinely match. Tell us the spacing you intend for the wall and we will confirm dimensions before carving.

Yes. The ornament is placed at the crest, base, side centres and corners rather than running continuously, and the rails between are left plain - so the piece has a clear outline and does not compete with wallpaper, panelling or pictures.

Hand-carved. The shells, the oval bosses and the corner scrolls are all cut from solid teak by hand, and the plain rails are worked with scrapers rather than machine-moulded, which is what lets the gold lie flat on them.

Yes, but specify it at the order stage - the shell crest is composed for the rail it sits on, so a landscape piece is carved for that rather than simply turned on its side.

This is one of the more accessible pieces in the range, priced on size and finish. Typically 4 to 6 weeks from order confirmation, with free shipping anywhere in India.
