Overview

This is a hand-carved solid teak wood Baroque wall mirror finished in gold, built around a rectangular bevelled plate set inside a fine beaded border, with a wide pierced acanthus crest spreading across the full width of the frame. The design language is high Baroque: layered acanthus cut through the timber, C-scrolls turning back on themselves down both stiles, a beaded moulding holding the glass, and a carved shell apron closing the base. The crest lifts in three stages rather than one, which is what gives the piece its width at the top.

It is made for broad walls that need to be filled without hanging an enormous sheet of glass - a living room above a sofa, an entrance hall, a dining wall, a bedroom above a chest of drawers. The bevelled edge on the plate picks up light along its full perimeter and throws it back, so the mirror brightens the wall as well as decorating it. Carving depth, crest spread and gold tone are all specified by you, and no two frames come off the bench identical.

The Story Behind This Mirror

A wide crest is a balancing problem. Spread acanthus too far and the frame looks top-heavy; keep it too tight and the mirror reads as a plain rectangle with a decoration stuck on. So the carver sets the crest out full-scale against the plate size first, and only then starts cutting - the composition is decided before any wood is removed, because pierced work cannot be revised.

The foliage is worked in layers. The ground is established, then one tier of acanthus is lifted away from it, then another, so leaves genuinely pass over and behind one another instead of being scratched onto a single plane. The waste between the layers is then pierced right through, which is the point of no return - the frame is now mostly air, and every remaining rib has to carry the glass. The beaded inner border is cut last and is the fussiest run on the piece: a single bead out of rhythm shows from across a room. Then hand-sanding through progressive grits, gold laid in coats and rubbed back at every raised leaf tip, and the bevelled plate fitted at the end.

Packaging and Transit Protection

The wide crest is both the best and the most vulnerable part of this mirror, because it projects further from the frame than anything else on the piece. It is packed first: every leaf tip individually wrapped in high-density foam, taped clear of the gilding, then the whole crest faced with foam sheet on both sides and blocked so nothing can press into the openwork and snap a rib. The stiles are treated the same way. The bevelled plate is covered with a shatter-retention film and backed with a rigid board.

The frame is then sleeved in a continuous foam blanket, corner-guarded at all four corners and set into a fitted wooden crate with foam blocking on every face, sized so the crest has clearance rather than sitting against the crate wall. The crate is marked for orientation and fragility, strapped and sealed, and we photograph it wrapped and closed before dispatch. On arrival, open against the packing list and inspect the crest leaf tips before signing.

Shipping and Delivery

This mirror is carved after you order. Typical lead time is 4 to 6 weeks from confirmation, moving to the longer end if you enlarge the frame or ask for a wider, deeper crest, since the layered piercing is the slowest stage at the bench. The exact timeline is confirmed in writing at order and we share progress photographs once the acanthus is cut and again after gilding, so you approve the actual frame before it ships.

Delivery is free anywhere in India. We arrange and manage transport and our team coordinates unloading and placement at your address rather than leaving a crate at the gate. Tell us in advance about stairs, lift dimensions or society service-entry restrictions so we can plan the route - note that the crate is sized to the crest, not the glass, so it is wider than the mirror. We advise on hanging hardware for your wall type. International orders are quoted case by case on request.

Craftsmanship Assurance and Care

Our craftsmanship assurance covers the solid teak frame and the hand-carving. If a joint opens or a carved element separates through a fault in the making - rather than impact, misuse, an unsuitable wall fixing or an attempted self-repair - we repair or replace it. Glass breakage after delivery and water damage are outside it.

Use a clean dry soft brush through the pierced crest and the openwork sides; a cloth catches on the leaf tips and can break the finest of them. A soft dry cloth is right for the beaded border and the apron. Never use water, chemical polish, alcohol or ammonia-based cleaners on the gilded surface - gold rubbed back by hand cannot be spot-repaired invisibly once stripped. Spray glass cleaner onto the cloth rather than onto the plate so nothing runs into the carving behind it. Keep the mirror out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources and air-conditioner outflow. Mount on a solid wall using anchors rated well above the mirror weight, remembering that a wide crest puts the load off-centre, and check the fixings once a year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this product.

Yes. The frame is genuine solid teak throughout, hand-selected and seasoned before carving. It is not veneer, MDF or engineered wood, and we confirm the wood in writing with your order.

Yes. The rectangular plate is bevelled, so the edge picks up light around its full perimeter and throws it back into the room. A plain flat plate can be specified instead if you prefer.

Yes. The crest spread is composed full-scale before carving begins, so it can be widened to fill more wall or tightened for a narrower space. Tell us the wall width when you enquire.

Hand-carved in layers and then pierced right through the solid teak. Moulded or machine work cannot undercut one leaf clear of the one behind it, which is what gives this frame its depth.

Yes, but tell us at the order stage - the crest composition is designed around the orientation, so a landscape piece is carved differently rather than simply turned on its side.

Typically 4 to 6 weeks from order confirmation, and shipping is free anywhere in India. Every leaf tip is individually foam-wrapped and the frame ships corner-guarded in a fitted crate.
