A drawer is judged by one thing: how it feels when you pull it. And that feel is decided by air.

A drawer that fits its opening exactly will bind, because the air trapped behind it has to escape past the sides as the drawer closes and be replaced as it opens. Too tight and it thumps and resists; too loose and it rattles and drops at the front when it is pulled out.

So our artisans fit each drawer to its own opening rather than to a specification - every drawer in this unit is made for one particular hole and marked so it is never swapped - and they leave a deliberate clearance at the back and at the top for the air to move, while keeping the sides close where the drawer runs.

Then it is tested by hand, loaded and empty, and eased where it needs easing. A drawer that runs beautifully when empty and stiffens when full has not been finished, only fitted.

It is slow, and it is the only way to get a drawer that still runs sweetly in twenty years.

Drawers are the thing to secure on a piece like this. Each travels closed and restrained so it cannot run open in transit and damage its own front or the carcass.

The pale ivory surfaces are faced with a clean non-transferring layer before any foam or tape goes near them, and the gold leaf carving on the drawer surrounds and apron is capped with shaped foam so nothing bears on it.

The carved scrolled feet are wrapped and blocked so the weight of the unit rests on its frame rather than on the feet.

Everything then goes into laminated foam, bubble wrap and a fitted wooden crate, marked for orientation. Multi-layer protective packaging is standard and dent-free arrival is guaranteed.

The solid teak carcass and its joinery carry a 20-year Brown Rabbit warranty - the carcass, the drawer divisions, the drawer boxes themselves, the apron and the feet.

A lifetime warranty against termite damage runs with the unit for as long as you own it, backed by teak's natural termite resistance and confirmed in writing.

Drawers are hand-fitted and can be eased again over the years as solid timber furniture settles into a particular room and climate. That is maintenance, not failure, and we will talk you through it or arrange it.
