A carved teak throne chair with lion arms and legs, a buttoned leather back and a pierced foliate crest, made to order by Brown Rabbit.

A chair like this is placed rather than arranged. It works at the head of a long table, beside a fireplace, in an entrance hall or as the single seat in a study - anywhere it can be seen from the front and approached directly.

Scale is worth settling early. The lions set the width of the chair, so a smaller overall size means smaller lions and a different character; we can also keep the lions at full size and adjust the back height instead. Tell us the space and we will draw both options.

Leather as photographed or any fabric you prefer, and the timber can be finished natural, gilded, silvered or ebonised. Custom sizes are made to order and final measurements are confirmed in writing before production.

The two lions on this chair are not a matched pair, and they were never meant to be.

A true mirror pair - one an exact reflection of the other - looks wrong on an animal, because no two living creatures hold themselves identically. So our artisans carve them as a handed pair with deliberate differences: the set of the jaw, the fall of the mane, the angle at which each head turns toward the person approaching the chair.

Each begins as a clay maquette worked in the round, which is turned and studied from every side before a chisel touches timber. That is the only way to resolve how a mane meets a shoulder, or how the weight sits over the forepaws, because those are three-dimensional problems that no drawing answers.

The lion is then blocked out in solid teak with the grain running along the body, so the legs have long grain down their length and the paws are strong where they meet the floor. The head is worked last, when the body is settled, because the head is what everyone looks at and the carver wants the piece in front of them fully resolved before starting on it.

Frame: solid teak throughout, hand-carved by master Indian artisans.

Structure: lions carved in the round forming both arms and front legs, blocked with the grain running along the body so the legs have long grain to the paw; carved mask on the front rail; shaped back frame with pierced foliate crest.

Upholstery: deep buttoned back and seat in leather as photographed, or the fabric of your choosing.

Modelling: lions carved as a handed pair from clay maquettes worked in the round, with deliberate differences between them.

Finish: natural polished teak as photographed; gilded, silvered and ebonised finishes available.

Sizes: custom sizes made to order - final measurements confirmed in writing before production.

Photography: images on this page are photographs of the actual product, not renders.

Figure carving in the round is the most exposed work we ship, and the lion heads project further than any other part of this chair.

Each head is wrapped and then capped with a moulded cover that stands clear of the muzzle and mane, so any contact with the crate reaches the cap rather than the carving. The paws at floor level are protected separately, since that is where a crate takes most of its knocks.

The buttoned leather is covered with a clean breathable wrap and given a standoff board on foam blocks, so nothing presses into the buttons.

The pierced crest is packed with foam worked into its openwork. Everything then goes into laminated foam, bubble wrap and a fitted wooden crate, marked for orientation. Multi-layer protective packaging is standard and dent-free arrival is guaranteed.

Free delivery anywhere in India is included in the price - no separate freight charge, no distance loading, no surcharge for a smaller town.

Production begins once your size, upholstery and finish are confirmed in writing. Figure carving takes longer than ornament, and the production window we give you reflects that rather than understating it.

The shipment is tracked and our team stays reachable throughout. Dent-free arrival is guaranteed and it is our responsibility to honour.

Tell us your doorway, stair and lift dimensions when you order. The lions make this chair wider than its seat suggests, and we measure the crate to the carving.

Brown Rabbit warrants the solid teak frame and its joinery for 20 years - the seat rails, the joints where the lion bodies carry the seat, the back frame and the crest fixings.

A lifetime warranty against termite damage runs with the chair for as long as you own it, resting on teak's natural termite resistance and confirmed in writing.

Buttoned upholstery can be re-tensioned and covers remade over the years without disturbing the carving, and the button positions are recorded on the frame so the pattern can be reproduced exactly.

Written warranty terms are issued with your order so the cover is agreed before production begins.

Everything you need to know about this product.

No, deliberately. They are carved as a handed pair with real differences in the set of the jaw, the fall of the mane and the angle of each head - because an exact mirror pair looks wrong on a living creature.

Structural. Each lion forms an entire side of the chair - the head becomes the arm, the body carries the seat rail and the forelegs stand on the floor as the front legs.

Yes, and there are two ways to do it. A smaller overall size means smaller lions and a different character; alternatively the lions stay full size and the back height is reduced. Tell us the space and we will draw both.

Yes, any fabric you like. Tell us the cloth and we will advise on how it will take the buttoning.
