A gilded teak framed wall mirror with a wide carved floral border, beaded edges and a plain plate, hand-carved and made to order by Brown Rabbit.

Border width is the variable worth thinking about. A wider border makes the piece more of a decorative object and the reflection more of an inset panel; a narrower one turns it back into a working mirror with a decorated edge. Both are available on the same design, and we will draw the proportion you want against the size of your wall.

The pattern itself can be carved in deeper relief for a room with strong side light, or shallower where the light is flat and a deep ground would only read as shadow. Tell us which wall it is going on and how the light falls there.

The plate can be plain as shown or bevelled, and the gilding laid warm or pale. Custom sizes are made to order and final measurements are confirmed in writing before production begins.

Carving a flat border is harder than carving a shaped one, and the difficulty is invisible: it is the depth of the ground.

On a moulded frame the profile itself gives the carver a reference. On a flat face there is nothing to work to, and a ground that wanders even slightly - a fraction deeper along the bottom rail than the top - will make one side of the mirror look heavier than the other under a lamp. Nobody could tell you why. Everybody would feel it.

So our artisans scribe a depth line along the edge of the frame stock before any pattern is drawn on it, and cut the ground down to that line first, across all four sides, checking with a small gauge as they go. Only when the ground is dead level does the flower and scroll work begin on top of it.

It means the pattern is built up from a true floor rather than dug down to an approximate one. Which is why the border on a piece like this reads evenly all the way round, and why the beads at the two edges stay the same brightness from corner to corner.

Material: solid teak throughout, hand-carved by master Indian artisans.

Structure: broad flat frame, mitred and pinned at the corners, with relief carving worked into the face and a rebate for the plate.

Ornament: floral and scroll relief across the border, cartouches at the corners and centres, beaded lines at the outer edge and around the opening.

Finish: gold gilding, burnished on the raised flowers and beads. Silver, ivory, champagne, black with gold and natural teak available.

Plate: plain mirror glass as photographed; bevelled plate available on request.

Hanging: concealed fixings supplied and rated for the finished weight; portrait, landscape or square proportion set at the time of order.

Sizes: custom sizes made to order - final measurements confirmed in writing before production.

Photography: images here are photographs of the actual product, not renders.

On a carved flat border the relief stands only a little proud of the ground, which makes the face vulnerable to anything that presses evenly across it - exactly the sort of contact that ordinary packing creates.

So the face is protected with a rigid board held clear of the carving on foam standoffs at the frame edges, leaving an air gap over the pattern itself. Nothing rests on the flowers.

The plate is faced with film and backed with a cut board so the glass carries no load, and the beaded edges - the finest detail on the piece - are protected along their full run at both the outer and inner lines.

The mirror is then wrapped in laminated foam and bubble wrap and crated in a fitted wooden case. Multi-layer protective packaging is standard and dent-free arrival is guaranteed on every order.

Delivery is free anywhere in India and included in the price - no freight line, no distance loading, no small-town surcharge.

Production begins once your size, border width, plate and finish are confirmed in writing. We give you a realistic production window then and keep you updated as the piece moves through carving, gilding and crating.

Shipment is tracked and our team stays reachable throughout the journey. Dent-free arrival is guaranteed and it is our responsibility to honour.

If there is a tight stair, a small lift or a narrow doorway at your end, tell us at the time of order and we plan the crate and the route around it before the mirror leaves the workshop.

Brown Rabbit warrants the solid teak frame and its joinery for 20 years - the mitred corners, the frame itself and the plate rebate, which on a wide flat frame are what keep the piece square and true against the wall.

A lifetime warranty against termite damage runs with the mirror for as long as you own it, backed by the natural termite resistance of teak and given in writing.

The gilding is laid and burnished by hand across a dense field of relief, so the brightness varies slightly from flower to flower. That variation is what makes hand gilding read as depth rather than as a flat metallic coat.

Written warranty terms are issued with your order so the cover is settled before the timber is cut.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this product.

Yes. A wider border makes the mirror more of a decorative panel; a narrower one keeps it a working mirror with a carved edge. We draw the proportion you prefer against your wall size and confirm it in writing.

Yes. The design is drawn square, portrait or landscape, and the pattern is reset so the corner cartouches and the flower runs stay balanced in the new proportion.

It is relief carving worked into a flat face, and the depth can be cut deeper for a wall with strong side light or shallower where the light is flat. Tell us how the light falls and we will carve to suit.

Plain as shown, or bevelled if you prefer - a bevel adds a bright refracted line where the glass meets the beaded inner edge.

Carved into the solid teak by master Indian artisans, working up from a ground that is levelled across all four sides before the pattern is begun. That is what keeps the border reading evenly all the way round.
