A gilded teak bedroom mirror with a pierced scroll surround, a plume crest and a plain rectangular plate, hand-carved and made to order by Brown Rabbit.

Height matters more here than in most rooms. Over a dressing table the plate wants to start low enough that you can see yourself while seated and finish high enough to be useful standing - and that depends on the height of your table and of the person using it. Send us those and we will set the plate height accordingly rather than making you adapt to a stock size.

The crest adds visual height above the plate, which is useful under a tall ceiling where a mirror sized only to the furniture below can look stranded. It can be built taller or kept lower depending on how much wall you have above the table.

The plate can be plain as shown or bevelled, and the gilding can be laid warm or pale to sit against your wall colour and bed linen. Custom sizes are made to order and final measurements are confirmed in writing before production.

Look closely at where the scrolls meet the glass and it seems as though the carved tips curl right over the edge of the plate. They do not. Every one of them stops just short.

The reason is simple. Glass and timber respond differently to a change in temperature, and a mirror plate that is pinched by carving at any point will eventually complain about it - first as a stress mark in the reflection, later as something worse. So our artisans cut the openwork panel with a deliberate set-back all around the opening, leaving a small clearance between the innermost scroll tips and the glass.

Then they work on the shadow. Each tip is undercut on its lower face so that it throws a dark line onto the plate edge, and the eye reads that shadow as contact. The gap does its structural job invisibly while the carving appears to embrace the glass.

It is a small clearance, decided at the drawing stage and held through every stage of making. It is also the difference between a mirror that survives twenty summers and one that does not.

Material: solid teak throughout, hand-carved by master Indian artisans.

Structure: rectangular inner frame carrying the plate rebate; pierced C-scroll surround worked as panels and joined to the frame; plume and palmette crest and scrolled base apron carved separately and joined in.

Finish: gold gilding over the carved surface, burnished on the scroll tips and the crest. Silver, ivory, champagne, black with gold and natural teak available on request.

Plate: plain mirror glass as photographed; bevelled plate available. Set into a rebate from the back with clearance to the carving.

Hanging: concealed fixings supplied, rated for the finished weight.

Sizes: custom sizes made to order - final measurements confirmed in writing before production.

Photography: the images here are photographs of the actual product, not renders.

Pierced scrollwork is mostly edges, and edges are what packing has to look after. The tips on this frame stand clear of the panel behind them, so pressure applied from outside would find them first.

Instead, soft foam is worked into the openings behind each scroll so the tips are supported from within. The plume crest, which stands highest and is the slenderest element in the piece, is capped separately before anything else goes over it.

The plate is faced with film and backed with a cut board so no load reaches the glass. The whole mirror is then wrapped in laminated foam and bubble wrap and set into a fitted wooden crate, marked for orientation.

Multi-layer protective packaging is standard on every order and dent-free arrival is guaranteed. If anything is not right when the crate opens, we sort it out.

Free delivery across India is included. No freight charge, no distance loading, no penalty for a smaller town.

Production begins when your size, plate and finish are confirmed in writing. We give a realistic production window at that point and update you as the mirror moves from carving to gilding to crating.

The shipment is tracked and our team stays reachable. Dent-free arrival is guaranteed, and honouring it is our job, not yours.

If access at your end is restricted - a narrow stair, a small lift, a tight gate - tell us at the time of order and we plan the crate size and the route accordingly before the piece leaves the workshop.

Brown Rabbit warrants the solid teak frame and its joinery for 20 years. On this mirror that covers the inner rectangular frame, the joints holding the pierced panels to it, and the attachment of the crest and the base apron.

A lifetime warranty against termite damage runs with the piece for as long as you own it. Teak's natural oils give it real resistance to termites, and we commit to that in writing.

The gilding is laid and burnished by hand across a large number of small curved surfaces, so the shine varies slightly from scroll to scroll. That variation is what hand gilding produces and it is intended.

Written warranty terms are issued with your order, so the cover is agreed before we begin.

No, and deliberately so. Every scroll tip stops just short of the plate, leaving clearance for glass and timber to move independently. Each tip is undercut so the shadow it casts makes it read as though it touches.

Yes. The plume can be built up for a tall wall or kept lower where there is less space above the furniture. We draw it to your ceiling height and to the furniture the mirror will sit above.

Yes. The mirror is shown with a plain plate, which keeps the reflection clean, and a bevelled plate can be specified instead if you want a line of bright refraction around the edge.
