Diwan Sofa in Silver Leaf Teak with Oval Medallion Back

The patterned panel inside the medallion is not upholstered onto the diwan. It is made as a separate piece and dropped into the carved ring from behind, and there are good reasons for doing it the harder way.

The first is placement. A floral pattern inside an oval only works if the design is centred in it - a bouquet that sits low or off to one side looks like a mistake, however good the fabric is. Made as its own panel on the bench, the cloth can be moved around on the former until the pattern is exactly where it should be, checked, and only then fixed. Try to do that in place, with the frame already carved and gilded around the opening, and you are working blind.

The second is the future. Fabric is the part of any diwan that ages first. Because the medallion panel is an independent drum, it can be lifted out and recovered on its own years later - a new pattern, or the same one refreshed - without a tack being pulled anywhere near the silvered carving.

The panel is held from behind with turn fixings, so removing it takes minutes and leaves no mark.

Frame: solid teak throughout, hand-carved, with a silver leaf show frame.

Head: carved oval medallion standing clear of the back, filled with a removable patterned panel.

Back: continuous shaped and carved back rail sweeping from the medallion down to a low foot, deep buttoned between.

Seat: single full-length piped cushion on a sprung and webbed platform.

Arms: carved scrolled arms at both ends.

Legs: hand-shaped cabriole legs with carved knees.

Handing: built with the medallion to the left or to the right, to your requirement.

Finish: silver leaf applied by hand over the whole show frame.

Silver leaf marks under anything abrasive, so the show frame is protected quite separately from the upholstery.

Acid-free tissue is laid directly against every silvered surface - the medallion ring, the back rail, the arm scrolls, the apron and the legs - then foam padding shaped along each moulding, then bubble wrap.

The upholstered back and seat are wrapped in breathable cloth and then soft polythene, so the covering is protected without being sealed against itself.

The medallion panel is removed and packed flat in its own sleeve, face protected with tissue, which keeps the patterned cloth away from everything else in transit.

Legs are detached where the design allows, sleeved in foam and boxed with blocking at the ankle.

Production begins once your length, handing and coverings are confirmed in writing. We photograph your actual diwan through the build - the frame in the white, the carving, the silver leaf, the medallion panel with the pattern centred, and the finished piece.

On delivery our team carries the diwan in, fits the legs if they have travelled separately, sets and levels it, and installs the medallion panel last so it is never under pressure in transit.
