A carved teak black throne chair with feathered wings, buttoned leather upholstery and an ebonised finish, made to order by Brown Rabbit.

This is a statement chair and it needs to be given room - the wings extend well beyond the frame on both sides, so it wants a wall of its own rather than a place in a row of furniture.

The span of the wings is adjustable. Drawn back they read as shoulders to the chair; opened wide they become the point of the piece. We can show you both at drawing stage.

Leather as photographed or any fabric, and the same design can be finished in gold, silver or natural teak if you prefer the wings to be picked out rather than absorbed. Custom sizes are made to order and final measurements are confirmed in writing before production.

Feathers are carved from the back forward, which is the opposite of how most people would begin.

A wing is made of overlapping layers - the long primaries at the outer edge lie under the shorter coverts nearer the body, and each row overlaps the one below it. If a carver starts at the front and works back, every feather has to be cut around what has already been carved, and the layering ends up shallow and confused.

So our artisans establish the deepest layer first, cutting the long primaries and taking the ground well down between them, then work forward row by row, each overlapping row carved above the last. By the time the coverts nearest the body are cut, the wing already has its full depth.

Each wing is also carved as a separate panel and joined to the back frame afterwards, with the joint hidden beneath the outermost row of coverts - because a wing carved directly onto the frame would have short grain across every feather tip on the outer edge, and those tips are the first thing anyone brushes past.

Frame: solid teak throughout, hand-carved by master Indian artisans.

Wings: carved as separate panels with the feather layers cut back-to-front so the deepest row is established first; joined to the back frame with the joint concealed beneath the outer coverts; span adjustable.

Structure: shaped back frame with carved crest; scrolled arms; pierced carved apron; carved legs.

Upholstery: deep-buttoned back and seat in leather as photographed, or the fabric of your choosing.

Finish: ebonised black throughout as photographed; gold, silver and natural teak available.

Sizes: custom sizes made to order - final measurements confirmed in writing before production.

Photography: images on this page are photographs of the actual product, not renders.

The wings are the widest, thinnest and most exposed elements on any chair we make, and they are packed accordingly.

Each wing is faced and then supported along its whole span by a shaped former that follows its curve, so the feather tips carry no load at any point. The outer tips are capped individually.

The ebonised surfaces are faced with a clean non-transferring layer before foam, because a dark finish shows a scuff as a shine.

The buttoned leather is covered with a breathable wrap and given a standoff board. Everything then goes into laminated foam, bubble wrap and a fitted wooden crate built to the full wingspan. Multi-layer protective packaging is standard and dent-free arrival is guaranteed.

Delivery anywhere in India is free and included in the price - no separate freight charge, no distance loading, no small-town surcharge, whatever the crate size.

Production begins once your dimensions, wingspan, upholstery and finish are confirmed in writing. Feather carving is slow work and the production window we give you includes it honestly.

The shipment is tracked and our team stays reachable throughout. Dent-free arrival is guaranteed and it is our responsibility to honour.

Tell us your doorway, stair and lift dimensions when you order. The wingspan decides the crate, and where access is tight the wings can travel unfitted and be joined on site.

The solid teak frame and its joinery carry a 20-year Brown Rabbit warranty - the seat rails, the leg joints, the back frame, the arm structure and the joints carrying both wings.

A lifetime warranty against termite damage runs with the chair for as long as you own it, backed by teak's natural termite resistance and given in writing.

Buttoned leather can be re-tensioned and recovered over the years without disturbing the carving, and the wings are removable at their joints for any future restoration - which is the practical reason for building them as separate panels.

Written warranty terms are issued with your order so the cover is agreed before production begins.
