A carved teak lion chair with gilded lion-head arms and paw feet, a buttoned black velvet back and a gilded frame, made to order by Brown Rabbit.

Black and gold is the most graphic pairing we make and the easiest to place in a contemporary room, because the black reads as a shape and the gold as a line.

The lion heads sit exactly where a hand falls on an arm, so they are handled every time the chair is used. They are carved with that in mind - modelled with rounded, comfortable forms rather than sharp detail that would be unpleasant under the palm.

Velvet as photographed or any fabric you prefer, and the frame can be gold, silver, bronze or natural teak. Custom sizes are made to order and final measurements are confirmed in writing before production.

A lion head at the front of an arm is the one piece of carving on a chair that will be touched every single day, and that changes how it is cut.

Decorative carving is worked for the eye: undercut deeply, left crisp at the edges, detailed to the last whisker. Do that on an arm terminal and the result is uncomfortable to hold and vulnerable to knocks - fine detail at the front of an arm is detail waiting to be broken.

So our artisans model these heads for the hand as much as the eye. The mane is cut in broad, rounded locks rather than fine strands, the muzzle is softened where a palm would rest, and the deepest undercutting is kept to the top and sides where fingers do not reach.

Look at the head straight on and it is a lion. Put your hand over it and it is a smooth, comfortable arm terminal. Getting both from one piece of timber is the actual skill, and it is why the carver is given the finished chair dimensions before starting rather than working from a drawing of a lion alone.

Frame: solid teak throughout, hand-carved by master Indian artisans.

Structure: gilded lion heads at the front of each arm and lion paws at the front feet, with the leg between them carved as a suggested foreleg; shaped back frame with carved crest; shell-centred apron.

Carving: arm heads modelled for the hand - broad rounded mane locks, softened muzzle, deepest undercutting kept away from where fingers reach.

Upholstery: deep-buttoned back and sprung seat; velvet or fabric of your choosing.

Finish: gold with black upholstery as photographed; silver, bronze and natural teak available.

Sizes: custom sizes made to order - final measurements confirmed in writing before production.

Photography: images on this page are photographs of the actual product, not renders.

The lion heads project furthest forward on this chair and the paws sit at floor level, so both ends of each side are protected first.

Each head is wrapped and capped with a moulded cover standing clear of the muzzle, and each paw is capped separately since floor-level carving is what a crate strikes.

The black velvet is covered with a clean breathable wrap and given a standoff board on foam blocks so nothing presses into the buttons or crushes the pile.

Everything then goes into laminated foam, bubble wrap and a fitted wooden crate, marked for orientation. Multi-layer protective packaging is standard and dent-free arrival is guaranteed.

Free delivery anywhere in India is included in the price - no separate freight charge, no distance loading, no small-town surcharge.

Production begins once your dimensions, fabric and finish are confirmed in writing. Figure carving on the arms and feet takes longer than plain terminals, and the production window we give you reflects that.

The shipment is tracked and our team stays reachable throughout. Dent-free arrival is guaranteed and it is ours to honour.

Tell us your doorway and stair dimensions when you order. The lion heads make the chair wider at arm height than at the seat, and we measure the crate to the heads.

Brown Rabbit warrants the solid teak frame and its joinery for 20 years - the seat rails, the leg and paw joints, the arm structure carrying the lion heads, the back frame and the crest fixings.

A lifetime warranty against termite damage runs with the chair for as long as you own it, resting on teak's natural termite resistance and confirmed in writing.

Because the arm heads are handled daily, they are carved from the same solid timber as the arm rather than applied - so there is no joint at the point of most use. Buttoning can be re-tensioned and covers remade without disturbing the carving.

Written warranty terms are issued with your order so the cover is agreed before production begins.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this product.

Carved from the same solid timber as the arm, so there is no joint at the point that gets handled every day.

Yes, deliberately. The mane is cut in broad rounded locks, the muzzle is softened where a palm rests, and the deepest undercutting is kept to the top and sides where fingers do not reach.

Yes, any fabric or velvet you like. Black with gold is the most graphic pairing, but the same chair reads quite differently in a deep green, wine or ivory.

It is one of the easiest of our chairs to place in a contemporary interior, because the black reads as a shape and the gold as a line - the carving is confined rather than spread over the whole piece.

Yes, and they are carved in parallel so the two lion heads on each chair agree with those on the other.

Solid teak throughout, hand-carved by master Indian artisans, with a 20-year warranty on the frame and joinery and a lifetime warranty against termite damage.
