A standing mirror in solid teak with a gilded rococo frame, an arched plate and scrolled feet, made to order by Brown Rabbit. The frame is pierced right through in the side panels, so the wall behind shows in the gaps and the gold outline appears to float rather than sit as a solid slab of ornament.

Height is the first thing to settle. A standing mirror earns its place when the top of the plate clears the tallest person who will use it and the bottom sits close enough to the floor to catch the hem of a garment. We build to whatever height your ceiling and your household call for, and the proportions of the crest and base are redrawn to suit that height rather than stretched.

The carving is cut by hand into solid teak, not applied as moulding, so the scrolls have real depth and hold their shadow under a lamp. Gilding is laid over the carved surface and burnished on the high points, which is what gives gold its variation in a photograph and in life. The plate can be supplied plain or bevelled.

The interesting part of a standing mirror is not the top, it is the floor. A tall gilded frame carries most of its weight high, so the base has to be drawn before the ornament is.

Our artisans start by striking the tipping line on the drawing board - the line through which the piece would topple if it were pushed. The scrolled feet are then placed so their toes land beyond that line at both front and back, which is why they turn outward rather than tucking under. Only once those two contact points are fixed does the base apron get its shell and its C-scrolls, and the ornament is composed to fill the space the feet have already defined.

The same logic runs upward. The crest is the heaviest single element in the frame, so it is carved from a stock that is hollowed on its back face, taking mass out where nobody sees it and keeping the standing piece calm on its feet. Anyone can carve a shell. Carving one that leaves the mirror steady is the part that takes years.

Material: solid teak throughout the frame, crest, base apron and feet, hand-carved by master Indian artisans.

Construction: jointed and pinned frame with a pierced surround; crest and base carved as separate elements and joined into the main frame; feet integral with the base scrolls.

Finish: gold gilding over the carved surface, burnished on the raised work. Alternative finishes, including silver, ivory, black with gold and natural teak, are available on request.

Plate: mirror glass, plain or bevelled, set into a rebate from the back and secured behind the frame.

Format: free-standing on scrolled feet; a discreet wall restraint is supplied for use where required.

Sizes: custom sizes made to order - final measurements confirmed in writing before production.

Photography: the images on this page are photographs of the actual product, not renders.

A standing mirror travels with two vulnerabilities: the glass, and the pierced side panels where the carving stands proud of the frame. Both are packed for specifically.

The plate is faced with a soft film and then a rigid board cut to the shape of the opening, so nothing bears on the glass itself. The pierced scrollwork is wrapped in foam that is pressed into the openings rather than stretched across them, which stops the projecting tips from taking a knock through a hollow gap.

The crest and the base scrolls get corner protection of their own. The whole frame then goes into laminated foam, bubble wrap and a fitted wooden crate, with the mirror carried on edge so the plate is never loaded flat.

Multi-layer protective packaging is standard on every order, and we guarantee dent-free arrival. If anything is wrong when you open the crate, tell us and we put it right.

Free delivery across India is included in the price. There is no separate freight charge, no distance loading and no surcharge for reaching a smaller town.

Because each standing mirror is made to order, production begins once your size, finish and plate specification are confirmed in writing. We give you a realistic production window at that point rather than an optimistic one, and we tell you when the piece moves from carving to gilding to packing.

Dispatch is tracked, and our team stays in contact through the journey. Delivery is guaranteed dent-free - that guarantee is ours to honour, not something you have to argue for.

Tell us if access at your end is tight - a narrow stair, a lift with a low ceiling, a gate that limits the crate size - and we plan the crating and the route around it before the piece leaves the workshop.

Brown Rabbit gives a 20-year warranty on the solid teak frame and its joinery. That covers the jointed surround, the carved crest and base, and the way the feet are attached to the frame - the parts that carry weight and hold the piece square over decades.

Alongside it runs a lifetime warranty against termite damage. Teak is naturally resistant to termites because of the oils in the timber, and we back that natural property with a written guarantee for as long as you own the mirror.

The gilded surface is hand-applied and will settle over time on the raised work, which is the intended behaviour of a burnished gold finish rather than a defect. Should the piece ever need attention, the same workshop that carved it can restore it, because we keep the setting-out drawings for every made-to-order piece.

Warranty terms are issued in writing with your order, so what is covered is on paper before the first cut is made.

It stands on its own scrolled feet, which are set out to give it a stable footprint. We also supply a discreet restraint that can be used to tie it back to the wall where you would prefer that reassurance, and it is invisible once the mirror is in place.
