A carved teak sofa with a full-width openwork crest, buttoned medallion back and gilded cabriole legs, made to order by Brown Rabbit.

Because the crest is pierced, this sofa works well placed away from a wall - seen from behind it is a screen of carving rather than a flat upholstered back, so it can divide a large room or sit facing a fireplace without needing to be pushed against something.

It also means the wall colour behind matters. Against a deep wall the gold scrollwork stands out sharply; against a pale one the whole piece reads lighter. Tell us the wall and we can advise on how warm to lay the gilding.

Fabric, cushion count, dimensions and finish are all yours to set, and matching chairs and a centre table can be made as a suite. Custom sizes are made to order and final measurements are confirmed in writing before production.

A crest cut through into openwork has no back to it, which means it has to be finished on both faces - and that is where most of the extra work in this sofa goes.

On a solid crest, the carver works the front and leaves the back flat, because nobody sees it. On a pierced one, every scroll is visible from behind whenever the sofa stands away from a wall, and a scroll that is rounded on the front and flat on the back looks, from the rear, like a cardboard cut-out.

So each element here is carved on both faces - not identically, because the back is seen at a different angle and in different light, but modelled enough that the scrolls read as solid forms from either side. The undercutting is worked from both directions too, which is what lets the piercings stay open and clean rather than tapering into a hole.

It roughly doubles the carving time on the crest. It is also the only honest way to make a piece that will be seen in the round, and we build it that way whether or not you intend to place it against a wall - because rooms change.

Frame: solid teak throughout, hand-carved by master Indian artisans.

Structure: full-width openwork crest carved on both faces and undercut from both directions; buttoned medallion back panel with upholstered wings; scrolled arms with carved volute terminals; carved apron; gilded cabriole legs.

Seat: long cushion over a sprung and webbed platform.

Finish: gilding with toning as photographed; silver, ivory, champagne, black with gold and natural teak available.

Upholstery: fabric of your choosing.

Sizes: custom sizes made to order - final measurements confirmed in writing before production.

Photography: images on this page are photographs of the actual product, not renders.

An openwork crest is the most fragile element we make into a sofa, and it is packed accordingly.

Foam is worked into every piercing so the scrolls are supported from within rather than pressed from outside, and the crest is then capped along its full width with a shaped cover held clear of the carving on blocks at the frame line.

The upholstery is covered with a clean breathable wrap and the buttoned medallion is given a standoff board on foam so nothing presses into the buttons.

The arm volutes are capped individually and the cabriole legs wrapped and blocked so the sofa's weight rests on its rails. Everything then goes into laminated foam, bubble wrap and a fitted wooden crate. Multi-layer protective packaging is standard and dent-free arrival is guaranteed.

Delivery anywhere in India is free and included in the price - no separate freight charge, no distance loading, no surcharge for a smaller town.

Production begins once your dimensions, fabric and finish are confirmed in writing. A crest carved on both faces adds time to the build, and the production window we give you includes it.

The shipment is tracked and our team stays reachable throughout. Dent-free arrival is guaranteed and it is our responsibility to honour.

Tell us your doorway, stair and lift dimensions when you order. The crest makes this sofa taller than most, and we plan the crate and route around that before it leaves the workshop.

Brown Rabbit warrants the solid teak frame and its joinery for 20 years - the seat rails, the cabriole leg joints, the back frame, the arm structure and the joints carrying the openwork crest.

A lifetime warranty against termite damage runs with the sofa for as long as you own it, resting on teak's natural termite resistance and confirmed in writing.

Cushions can be refilled and covers remade over the years without disturbing the frame, and the buttoning can be re-tensioned. We can carry out that work whenever it is wanted.

Written warranty terms are issued with your order so the cover is agreed before production begins.
