A curved-back sofa in carved teak with a wrapped top rail, buttoned centre panel and gilded crest, made to order by Brown Rabbit.

A curved back changes how a sofa sits in a room. It works particularly well away from a wall - in the middle of a large room, facing a fireplace, or at an angle in a corner - because the wrapped shape gives it a finished outline from behind as well as in front.

It is also a sociable shape. The curve turns the outer seats slightly inward, so two people at opposite ends of the sofa face each other a little rather than sitting shoulder to shoulder in a line.

The degree of curve can be drawn tighter or more open depending on the room and how the sofa will be used. Fabric, dimensions and finish are all yours to set. Custom sizes are made to order and final measurements are confirmed in writing before production.

The continuous rail that runs from the front of one arm, round the back, and out to the front of the other is the hardest single component we make for a sofa - and it cannot be one piece of timber.

No board is long enough, and even if one were, the grain would run out across the curve at both ends and the arms would snap. So the rail is built in segments, each cut with its grain following the arc of that section, and jointed to its neighbours on a joint cut at the angle where the two meet.

Where those joints fall is the decision. Put one at the crown of the curve and it is under the greatest bending load; put one at a straight passage and it is doing nothing useful. Our artisans place them at the points where the curvature is changing - the transition between back and arm - because that is where two segments naturally meet at a shallow angle, and a shallow angle means a long joint face with plenty of gluing area.

The carving is then run across the finished rail, which hides the joints entirely and, more importantly, is set out from the crown outward so the pattern is symmetrical about the centre of the sofa rather than about any of its joints.

Frame: solid teak throughout, hand-carved by master Indian artisans.

Structure: continuous shaped top rail built from segments with grain following the arc, jointed at the transitions between back and arm; buttoned centre back panel; pierced gilded crest; carved apron; splayed carved legs.

Seat: single long cushion over a sprung and webbed platform.

Curve: degree of curvature drawn to suit your room and how the sofa will be placed.

Finish: ivory and gold as photographed; other finishes available.

Upholstery: fabric of your choosing, with pattern set out about the centre line.

Sizes: custom sizes made to order - final measurements confirmed in writing before production.

Photography: images on this page are photographs of the actual product, not renders.

A curved sofa has no flat sides, which changes how it is crated - the packing has to follow the shape rather than box it.

The wrapped rail is protected along its whole curve with continuous foam rather than at points, so no single spot on the arc takes load, and the carved front scrolls at each arm end are capped individually.

The upholstery is covered with a clean breathable wrap, and the buttoned back is given a standoff board held clear on foam blocks so nothing presses into the buttons.

The pierced crest is packed from within its openwork, and the splayed legs are wrapped and blocked so the weight rests on the rails. Everything then goes into laminated foam, bubble wrap and a fitted wooden crate shaped to the piece. Multi-layer protective packaging is standard and dent-free arrival is guaranteed.

Free delivery anywhere in India is included in the price - no separate freight charge, no distance loading, no small-town surcharge.

Production begins once your dimensions, degree of curve, fabric and finish are confirmed in writing. You get a realistic production window at that stage and updates as the piece moves through frame work, carving, gilding, upholstery and crating.

The shipment is tracked and our team stays reachable throughout. Dent-free arrival is guaranteed and it is ours to honour.

Tell us your doorway, stair and lift dimensions when you order. A curved sofa measures wider on the diagonal than its stated width, so we work the access question out on the drawing rather than at your door.

The solid teak frame and its joinery carry a 20-year Brown Rabbit warranty - the segmented top rail and every joint in it, the seat rails, the leg joints and the crest and apron fixings.

A lifetime warranty against termite damage runs with the sofa for as long as you own it, resting on teak's natural termite resistance and confirmed in writing.

The cushion can be refilled and the covers remade over the years without disturbing the frame, and the buttoning can be re-tensioned. We can carry out that work whenever it is wanted.

Written warranty terms are issued with your order so the cover is agreed before production begins.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this product.

Yes, and it is designed for it. The wrapped back gives the piece a finished outline from behind, so it works in the middle of a room, facing a fireplace, or at an angle in a corner.

Yes. The degree of curvature is drawn to your room and to how the sofa will be used - a tighter curve is more sociable, a more open one seats a wider row comfortably.

In segments, each cut with its grain following the arc and jointed to its neighbours at the transitions between back and arm, where the joint faces are longest. The carving is then run across the finished rail and set out symmetrically about the centre.

Yes. Tell us the fabric and we set the pattern out about the centre line of the sofa so the design is symmetrical across the back and the seat.

One long cushion as shown, which suits the unbroken sweep of the curve. Separate cushions can be made instead if you would rather turn them individually.

Yes. Chairs and a two-seat version can be made to the same carving and finish, set out together so the details agree across the suite.
