A sage velvet sofa on a carved teak frame with a fluted back, pierced crest and openwork apron, made to order by Brown Rabbit.

Velvet is worth choosing deliberately. It has a pile with a direction, and which way that direction runs changes the colour of the finished piece - laid one way the sofa reads darker and richer, the other way lighter and more silvery. We will show you both before cutting and let you choose.

Fluting suits velvet particularly well because the channels give the pile something to do; on a flat panel velvet is a single field of colour, while on a fluted back it becomes a series of gradations.

Colour, fabric, dimensions and the number of cushions are all yours to set, and matching chairs can be made as a suite. Custom sizes are made to order and final measurements are confirmed in writing before production.

Every flute in this back is stuffed separately, and each one is filled a little more than the last towards the centre.

The reason is the shape of the back. It curves gently forward at its ends, and a channel that is filled with exactly the same amount of material along its whole length will look thinner where the back curves away from you and fatter where it faces you square on. The eye compares each flute with its neighbour, so any inconsistency reads immediately as a mistake.

So our upholsterers weigh the filling for each channel and increase it slightly through the run, compensating for the angle at which each will be seen. The result is that from a seated position across the room, every flute appears identical - which is exactly what nobody notices, and that is the point.

The buttons at the base of each channel are then pulled to a marked depth rather than to feel, so the row of buttons sits on a true horizontal line even though each is anchored into a slightly different thickness of filling.

Frame: solid teak throughout, hand-carved by master Indian artisans.

Structure: shaped back frame with vertical fluted channels, each individually filled and buttoned at the base; pierced foliate crest; scrolled arms; openwork carved apron; carved feet.

Fluting: filling weighed per channel and graduated through the run so the flutes read identically across the curved back; buttons pulled to a marked depth for a true horizontal line.

Seat: single long shaped cushion over a sprung and webbed platform.

Finish: ivory frame with gold on the carving; other finishes available.

Upholstery: velvet or fabric of your choosing, with pile direction agreed before cutting.

Sizes: custom sizes made to order - final measurements confirmed in writing before production.

Photography: images on this page are photographs of the actual product, not renders.

Velvet needs handling that other fabrics do not, because pressure crushes pile and a crush mark takes time to lift.

So the upholstered surfaces are covered first with a clean breathable wrap, and the fluted back is then protected with a standoff board held clear of the surface on foam blocks at the frame edges - there is an air gap over the velvet itself and nothing rests on it.

Bolsters and cushions travel wrapped individually so they arrive with their shape and pile intact.

The pierced crest and openwork apron are packed with foam worked into their piercings, and the carved feet are wrapped and blocked so the sofa's weight rests on its rails. Everything then goes into laminated foam, bubble wrap and a fitted wooden crate. Multi-layer protective packaging is standard and dent-free arrival is guaranteed.

Delivery anywhere in India is free and included in the price - no separate freight charge, no distance loading, no surcharge for a smaller town.

Production begins once your dimensions, fabric, pile direction and finish are confirmed in writing. You get a realistic production window at that point and updates as the piece moves through frame work, carving, finishing, upholstery and crating.

The shipment is tracked and our team stays reachable throughout. Dent-free arrival is guaranteed and it is ours to honour.

Tell us your doorway, stair and lift dimensions when you order and we plan the crate and route around them before the sofa leaves the workshop.

Brown Rabbit warrants the solid teak frame and its joinery for 20 years - the seat rails, the leg joints, the fluted back frame, the arm structure and the crest and apron fixings.

A lifetime warranty against termite damage runs with the sofa for as long as you own it, backed by teak's natural termite resistance and confirmed in writing.

Fluted work can be re-filled and re-tensioned and covers remade over the years without disturbing the frame, and the channel positions are set out on the frame so the pattern can be reproduced exactly if the sofa is ever recovered.

Written warranty terms are issued with your order so the cover is agreed before production begins.

Because velvet has pile, and channels give that pile something to do - each flute catches light down one side and shades on the other, turning a flat field of colour into a run of gradations.

The filling is weighed for each channel and graduated through the run, compensating for the angle at which each flute will be seen on a curved back. The buttons are then pulled to a marked depth so the row sits on a true horizontal.
